Slot’s own Rice: Liverpool have submitted an offer for £61m “monster”

Liverpool extended their winning run to three matches in the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield on Saturday.

The Reds, however, are still ten points behind league leaders Arsenal in their defence of their Premier League crown, which means that there is still a lot of work to be done for them to retain the title.

One of Arsenal’s top performers this season has, of course, been England international Declan Rice, who has scored two goals and provided three assists, per Sofascore, whilst also winning 55% of his duels.

The 26-year-old star’s consistent performances in the middle of the park, with his play in and out of possession, have helped the Gunners to their place at the top of the table.

Liverpool submit bid to sign new midfielder

Now, the Reds are reportedly looking to bring in a new midfielder who could be Arne Slot’s own version of the former West Ham United talent.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to a report from Spain, Liverpool are pursuing a deal to sign Eduardo Camavinga from Real Madrid ahead of the January transfer window.

The report claims that the Premier League champions have already submitted an offer of £61m in an attempt to land the France international to bolster their options in the middle of the park.

However, it adds that Real Madrid do not want to lose the left-footed star ahead of the second half of the season, which makes it an incredibly difficult deal for Liverpool to complete in January.

The Spanish giants view Camavinga as a key player and are not actively looking to cash in on the Frenchman, so the Reds may need to significantly up their offer to secure his services.

Why Liverpool should push to sign Eduardo Camavinga

Slot should push the club to keep trying to sign the Real Madrid star, despite the Spanish team’s current stance, because the midfielder could be his own version of Declan Rice.

Camavinga, like the English superstar, is an incredibly well-rounded central midfielder who has the potential to dominate matches in and out of possession.

Based on their statistics over the past 365 days, as shown in the chart above, both Camavinga and Rice excel in several areas of the game, which shows that they can impact matches in multiple ways, rather than being specialist one-trick ponies.

The France international, who was hailed as a “duel monster” by analyst Raj Chohan, is brilliant in his individual duels, winning 70% of his ground duels in LaLiga so far this season, per Sofascore.

However, per FBref, Camavinga also ranks within the top 20% of midfielders for progressive passes (6.33) per 90 and the top 4% for successful take-ons (1.93) per 90, which shows that he is also exceptional in possession to go along with his defensive qualities.

Like Rice, the Real Madrid star has won 50% or more of his duels on the ground and in the air, per Sofascore, which could make him an upgrade on Alexis Mac Allister in the middle of the park for Liverpool.

As you can see in the table above, the Argentine midfielder has been a lightweight in the Premier League so far this season, losing the majority of his duels on the deck and in the air.

The former Brighton star has not made up for that with quality on the ball, with no goals and less xA than Camavinga, which suggests that the Frenchman would arrive at Anfield as a much better option in a box-to-box midfield role.

These statistics suggest that the Real Madrid midfielder could improve Slot’s team by adding more quality in and out of possession in the middle of the park, as a replacement for Mac Allister.

That is why Liverpool should be pushing hard to strike an agreement with Real Madrid for the former Rennes midfielder, because he could be Slot’s own Rice and an upgrade on Mac Allister, based on his impressive performances for the Spaniards.

Liverpool secured another shaky win in the Premier League against bottom-of-the-table Wolves.

It is now down to the club to improve their offer and present the LaLiga giants with a bid that is too good for them to turn down in the January transfer window.

Wolves’ Romain Saiss has been Lage’s hero

In Bruno Lage’s first season as Wolves manager since replacing Nuno Espirito Santo back in the summer, the Old Gold are currently well in the race to secure European football with a total of 12 wins, four draws and eight defeats under their belt in 24 games played.

One impressive factor of Wolves’ season so far is their defensive record, having conceded just 18 goals, leaving only league leaders Manchester City with a better record.

With that in mind, one player that has contributed a lot to Wolves’ impressive defensive record this season is Romain Saiss.

The Moroccan has started all but two of their league games this term, only missing fixtures with Southampton and Brentford as a result of AFCON, which shows just how important he’s been for Lage in 2021/22.

With Wolves conceding in both games that he missed last month and keeping three consecutive clean sheets before he jetted off for international duty, it suggests that the Old Gold’s defence was undoubtedly weakened due to his absence.

The 31-year-old’s performances this season have also shown just how valuable he is to Lage’s side with WhoScored giving him an overall rating of 7.02/10, making him Wolves’ third-highest rated player.

From a defensive point of view, the £28k-per-week Morocco international has managed to win a total of 56 aerial duels, 44 interceptions and 26 tackles, highlighting how much of a defensive unit he has been in this campaign and how much he has contributed at the back.

Having been likened to former AC Milan defender Paolo Maldini by people at the club according to Lage, Saiss’ current contract at Molineux is due to expire at the end of the season.

Taking into account his impressive performances this campaign, the defender has certainly put himself in the frame for the club to offer him a new deal given how valuable he has proven himself to be.

Moving forward, if the defender can keep up the same level of performance he has done throughout the season to date, the Midlands club should definitely see if he would be willing to continue his career in a Wolves shirt and sign a new contract.

West Brom: Madeley drops Cleary update

West Bromwich Albion centre-forward Reyes Cleary has still not signed a new contract with the Baggies.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Steve Madeley, with the journalist revealing in a recent article for The Athletic that, despite the 17-year-old’s current contract at The Hawthorns set to expire this summer, as well as West Brom having expected the striker to put pen to paper on a professional deal earlier this year, an agreement is yet to be reached with the teenager.

In his report, Madeley writes: “Prolific forward Reyes Cleary was expected to sign a professional contract early this year but, with March now underway, the deal has yet to be completed.”

Fans will be fuming

Considering the abundance of potential that Cleary possesses, in addition to the fact that West Brom have made something of a habit of losing their most promising youth prospects on free transfers in recent years, the news that the club are yet to tie the 17-year-old down to a professional deal is sure to have left fans fuming.

Indeed, the youngster has been in remarkable goalscoring form for Albion’s youth sides so far this season, bagging 13 times over his nine outings for the U18s and seven times over 11 Premier League 2 fixtures.

This form has reportedly seen the likes of Bayern Munich, Schalke, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United all register an interest in the attacker, while a great many more clubs will undoubtedly join the queue for the teenager should he become a free agent at the end of the season.

As such, it would appear an absolute priority for Steve Bruce to do all he can to secure the future of the centre-forward who Richard Beale dubbed a “diamond” before the summer, or else the Baggies could well see a repeat of Louie Barry and Nathan Ferguson’s departures from the club back in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

Man City preparing Pino offer

As per reports out of Spain, Manchester City and by extension sporting director Txiki Begiristain are now preparing an offer to sign a brand new target in Villarreal sensation Yeremy Pino.

The Lowdown: Haaland the main man…

Reports over this last week suggest that Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland is the Sky Blues’ main summer transfer target.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/man-city-latest-developments-2/” title=”Man City latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, German news source Bild (via Sport Witness) even claim that Pep Guardiola’s side can ‘easily pay’ the Norway striker’s huge wages and release clause – all the while offering Haaland exactly what he wants.

This comes after David Ornstein of The Athletic revealed that he is City’s top target as the club plan meetings with his agent Mino Raiola ahead of the summer.

The Latest: City now eyeing Pino move…

Now, as per Spanish sources, the Citizens and title rivals Liverpool are preparing their ‘respective offers’ to sign Villarreal’s bright young attacker Pino this summer.

Indeed, the report adds that City and the Reds are ‘most interested’ in La Liga’s latest sensation – coming after he scored four goals in one game against Espanyol at the weekend.

The Verdict: Get it done?

Going by his brilliant form over 2021/2022, the Spaniard certainly has what it takes to thrive under Guardiola even amid the serious competition for places in City’s line up.

The English champions are blessed with an array of attacking talent, especially in midfield, but Pino’s electric performances have already seen him earn caps for Spain at just 19-years-old.

Called a ‘special talent’ by journalist Fabrizio Romano, Villarreal saw fit to insert a mammoth €80 million (roughly £67m) release clause when recently agreeing an extension on his deal until 2027.

This could be an indicator of Pino’s high ceiling and exactly why Guardiola’s side now want him.

Wolves still eyeing up Riqui Puig move

Wolves are still interested in signing Barcelona youngster Riqui Puig in the summer transfer window, with a new transfer rumour emerging from Spain on Tuesday morning.

The Lowdown: Wolves linked with Puig move

The 22-year-old was one of an endless stream of La Masia prospects tipped to do big things at Barca but it hasn’t quite panned out for him that way.

Puig has become an increasingly peripheral figure at the Camp Nou, making just one start in La Liga this season and appearing for only 17 minutes in the Champions League.

Wolves have been linked with signing the young midfielder in the past and their interest doesn’t appear to have gone away.

The Latest: New rumour emerges

According to Sport’s new update, Wanderers still see Puig as a primary transfer target this summer, looking at opportunities to bring him in at the end of the season.

Barca may be willing to sell the Spaniard, given his lack of playing time and the fact that his current deal expires in the summer of 2023.

[freshpress-quiz id=“388797″]

The Verdict: Great summer addition

Puig is a superb technical player who has enjoyed an incredible 93.9% pass completion rate across his ten league appearances this season, highlighting why he would be an exciting signing for Wolves, even if coming from a small sample size.

Not only that but he was once compared to Spanish legend Andres Iniesta by Daniele Massaro back in 2018, such was his reputation at the time.

Rangers endured nightmare with Eros Grezda

Rangers made a number of additions to their squad in the January transfer window as Ross Wilson went about improving Gio van Bronckhorst’s options at Ibrox.

The Gers signed Aaron Ramsey, James Sands, Mateusz Zukowski and Amad Diallo, whilst also securing a pre-contract deal for John Souttar to arrive in the summer.

At this moment in time, none of them are pulling up trees in Glasgow but they all have time to turn things around and have a huge part to play this season. However, some of them may flop and not last long in Scotland, as has been the case many times in the past with other players.

Nightmare

One dud the club had a nightmare with was Albanian wide man Eros Grezda, who they signed from NK Osijek whilst he was valued at £1.35m – by Transfermarkt – in the summer of 2018.

He made just 17 first-team appearances and scored two goals in his first season before he was embroiled in controversy and ultimately forced to leave Ibrox at the start of his second campaign.

The winger was accused of spitting at Ballymena defender Andrew Burns whilst playing for the Gers in the Tunnock Cup and then-boss Steven Gerrard said: “Grezda has been told face-to-face what his situation is. He’s been advised to find a different challenge for himself and his representation is aware of that.

“We’re trying to be respectful and give him game time to keep his fitness levels up as there are still a few markets and windows open around the world that might suit him.

“However, if you behave in that manner you won’t represent this club any level. No one behaves like that and wears the Rangers shirt so there will be a disciplinary situation.”

Opposition manager David Jeffrey felt sympathy for the club over the incident, saying:

“I know the Rangers people were embarrassed by what happened and felt let down. For us, the matter is over.”

He was issued with a fine for his actions and was subsequently sold back to Osijek in the next transfer window before spending two years with the Croatian outfit and being released on a free in February of this year – signing for HNK Sibenik.

At the time of writing (21/03/22), Transfermarkt value him at a measly £225k. This is a whopping 83.3% decrease from the £1.35m he was valued at upon his arrival at Ibrox. The dud’s value has plummeted over the years and his particular transfer to Rangers is not one that the club will be looking back on with fond memories…

Rangers can find Hagi 2.0 in their academy

Rangers boss Gio van Bronckhorst has a chance to cement his name in the club’s history as a successful manager before the end of the campaign.

He enjoyed a tremendous spell with the club as a player and is in with a shot at winning three trophies in his debut season in the dugout. The Gers could win the Premiership, Europa League and the Scottish Cup before the end of May, but the 47-year-old will need to get the most out of his squad in order to do so.

Charlie McCann, Alex Lowry and Leon King have all come up through the academy to feature in the cup, but there are some other players in the B team who also have the potential to make an impact at senior level.

Hagi 2.0

One gem in the current academy setup with a bright future is Ross McCausland. Van Bronckhorst may unearth the new Ianis Hagi with the 18-year-old winger if he is able to play his cards right in the coming months and years.

Earlier this season, The Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell compared him to the Romanian, writing: “Tony Weston and Ross McCausland were the two No 10s finding space and receiving on the half turn like Ryan Kent and Ianis Hagi.”

The current first-team magician is out injured for the rest of the campaign but was in fine form in the Premiership prior to his injury blow. He averaged an excellent SofaScore rating of 7.10 across 15 league appearances, creating 1.5 chances per game. This came after he managed seven goals and 11 assists in the top flight in the 2020/21 season.

McCausland also plays on the right-hand side of the attack, just like Hagi, and he has been in fine form in the UEFA Youth League this season, with three goals in five appearances in the competition. He has also scored seven goals in the Lowlands League, although it is unclear how many games he has played to reach that total.

Head of Academy Craig Mulholland previously claimed that the 18-year-old is “dominant” in one-on-one duels and also said: “We believe that Ross still has lots of potential to realise and there is so much more to come from him as he continues his development and learning journey with our excellent staff. He is a massive Rangers fan who is well supported by a strong family unit and we are all excited to see how he matures and develops as a player and as a person in the coming years.”

These comments suggest that the club have faith in his future and believe that he has the quality to make the step up to the first team. This is backed up by his form at youth level this season, which is illustrated by his statistics and Campbell’s comparison between him and Hagi.

Therefore, Van Bronckhorst can unearth his new attacking midfield gem by unleashing McCausland and having a look at what the 18-year-old can do at senior level.

Mina could replace Keane at Everton

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed that Everton will now be ‘buzzing’ over some injury news that has emerged involving Yerry Mina.

The Lowdown: Back at Finch Farm

As per injury expert Ben Dinnery, Mina is back at Finch Farm, as he looks to step up his recovery.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-3/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He has not featured for the Merseyside club since early February, with a crucial set of fixtures ahead, including a game away at West Ham United in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

While it feels unlikely he would immediately return to the XI against the Hammers, his return to action at Finch Farm surely means he is not too far off.

The Latest: Agbonlahor reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, former Aston Villa and England striker Agbonlahor, who is also a pundit for Sky Sports, has claimed that the Goodison Park faithful will be ‘buzzing’ to get Mina back, and suggested that he could replace Michael Keane in the team:

“Michael Keane has been absolutely dreadful in recent months.

“He’s lacked the pace, and he’s even lacked the intelligence at times.

“Mina coming back, for me, will be massive. I love him. He’s a big, physical, giant of a defender. He’s fairly quick, too.

“He’ll be one that I’m sure Frank Lampard will be relying on, they’ll be buzzing to get him back.

“Lampard has got a lot to sort out in the summer with that defence.”

The Verdict: Mina over Keane

It was not long ago that pundit Jamie Carragher called the Toffees’ defence a ‘Championship back four’ after losing 5-0 away at Tottenham Hotspur, and Keane played that night in the absence of Mina.

The fact that the Englishman has been a just outside of the relegation zone suggests that his defending has not been up to scratch this campaign. In contrast, four of the Blues’ seven wins in the top flight have come when Mina is playing.

Nonetheless, once the Colombia international is fully fit, it seems like a logical swap from Frank Lampard to start him ahead of Keane.

Newcastle eyeing move for Ismaila Sarr

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle United and their interest in Watford attacker Ismaila Sarr…

What’s the talk?

According to The Sun, PIF are plotting a summer bid for the Hornets attacker in a potential £35m deal at the end of the season.

The report claimed that he is set to leave the Hertfordshire club irrespective of their divisional status, as they fight to remain in the Premier League. Liverpool are also believed to have sent scouts to watch him in action and may rival the Magpies for his signature.

Saint-Maximin 2.0

Newcastle can find their new Allan Saint-Maximin by bringing Sarr to St James’ Park as, just like the Frenchman, he is an exciting wide player who is capable of getting fans off their seats.

The Watford gem has the ability on the ball to beat opposition defenders with his dribbling and is capable of lighting up matches with his goalscoring quality. He has netted five goals in the Premier League this season whilst completing 1.8 dribbles per game.

In the Championship last term, he completed 1.9 dribbles per match and created a whopping 11 ‘big chances’ for his team-mates. He also found the net 13 times in the second tier as he showed that he can score and set up goals from out wide.

Saint-Maximin has produced five goals and three goals in the top flight this term, whilst averaging 4.3 dribbles per game. He attempts more take-ons than the Watford winger, although both players can contribute in the final third and have the ability to dribble past opponents.

Former Manchester United defender and current Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville previously showered Sarr with praise, saying: “He’s a big, big talent, honestly he really is. I always think, particularly as a wide player, what would I have not wanted to have played against? The first thing is pace.

“And then you’ve got to think about, can he use his pace? Well, yes, he can, because he makes really good quality runs: the spin in behind, straight, but also the run inside in between full-back and centre-back – which I always think is the most difficult to mark.”

These comments from the retired full-back illustrate exactly why Sarr would be an exciting player for the Newcastle supporters to watch, which is why he would be Saint-Maximin 2.0 for the Magpies. The flyer can get fans excited with his direct play on the wing, and PIF must now ensure that they can get a deal over the line for the Senegalese wizard.

Liverpool launch mega offer to sign “fantastic” Konate upgrade ahead of Barcelona

Liverpool have now submitted a mega offer to sign a key upgrade on Ibrahima Konate in 2026, according to recent reports.

Arne Slot makes "impossible" Premier League title claim

Whilst much of the focus has been on Alexander Isak’s injury this week, Arne Slot turned his attention back towards Liverpool’s struggles on the pitch ahead of the Reds’ clash with bottom side Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

The Dutchman admitted his frustration about Liverpool’s set-piece record, claiming that it’s “impossible” for his side to retain their Premier League record amid their current struggles.

Liverpool keen on signing £100m "warrior" to upgrade on Mac Allister

Liverpool are getting ready to make a series of changes in the transfer market in 2026.

ByAngus Sinclair

He told reporters: “I know the importance of it, it gets more and more, and that’s why we are so annoyed by our current record. It’s a big frustration we are where we are this season because when we were halfway through last season (when they won the league) we had not conceded one set-piece (goal).

“It’s impossible to be top-four, top-five with our set-piece balance, let alone winning the league. We are the only team in the top end of the table that has a negative set-piece balance (Manchester City are in fact on minus-one according to official data supplier Opta) – not only are we negative, we are minus-eight and still on equal points with fourth.

“But if we are minus-eight – Chelsea is I think plus-eight (actually plus-four) and Arsenal and United are very high (scoring 10 apiece) and if you look at that you could say how special it is we have as many points as we have if you have that set-piece balance. We all know why because in open chances created we are number one in the league.”

It’s a glaring issue for those at Anfield and particularly for Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk. Both have had their struggles this season, especially the Frenchman, and recent rumours suggest that Liverpool are ready to act.

Liverpool launch mega offer to sign Marc Guehi

According to reports in Spain, as relayed by Sport Witness, Liverpool have now launched a mega offer to sign Guehi in 2026 ahead of Barcelona. They have joined Bayern Munich in making a bid, and are said to be prepared to offer the player a significant salary.

Whether that bid is in an attempt to welcome the Crystal Palace star in January or on a free transfer when his contract expires in the summer remains to be seen, however.

The England international came within hours of joining Liverpool in the summer, only for Palace to pull the plug late on. Now, months later, they could finally get their man.
