Finch the star on tough day for batsmen

Aaron Finch and Andrew McDonald kept Victoria in with a chance on a day dominated by the bowlers in Hobart, where 13 wickets fell, and all to seamers

ScorecardAaron Finch, who made his Twenty20 debut for Australia this year, was in fine form•Getty ImagesAaron Finch and Andrew McDonald kept Victoria in with a chance on a day dominated by the bowlers in Hobart, where 13 wickets fell, and all to seamers. Tasmania were on top after they restricted the Bushrangers to 233 but by stumps, the Tigers were finding it tough going with the bat, and they were 3 for 74, with Ed Cowan on 25 and George Bailey on 2.Tasmania had lost their opener Nick Kruger, who was making his first Sheffield Shield appearance for his new state having moved from Queensland, for 11, before Alex Doolan (33) and Brady Jones also departed. Only three Victorians had reached double figures after they were sent in by Bailey, who was well supported by his new-ball bowlers.Ben Hilfenhaus picked up 4 for 44 and Luke Butterworth collected 4 for 62, and it was a real struggle for most of the Bushrangers. But 83 from Finch, who scored briskly, and 65 from the stand-in captain McDonald, ensured a vaguely respectable total, before James Pattinson chipped in with a late 31.Tasmania are in second place on the Sheffield Shield table and victory at home would give them an excellent buffer from the Bushrangers, who are third.

Celtic must move for Lovric this January

While Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side have been anything but quiet in the January transfer window so far, with the Bhoys having already confirmed the arrivals of Daizen Maeda, Yosuke Ideguchi, Reo Hatate and Johnny Kenny, there is still much work to be done if the 56-year-old manager wishes to give his side the best possible chance of reclaiming the Premiership title this season.

And, with Croatian media outlet Sportske Novosti recently reporting that one of Celtic’s main summer transfer targets, HNK Gorica winger Kristijan Lovric, is available on the current market for considerably less than £5m that was mooted for his services just six months ago, a move for the 26-year-old could once again be on the cards for the Bhoys this month.

Indeed, the £4.5m-rated man would appear to make a fantastic addition to Postecoglou’s current options out wide, as the Croatia international has been in remarkable form over his 18 1.HNL appearances this season.

He has scored eight goals, registered three assists and created seven big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of a whopping 4.6 shots and making 2.2 key passes per game. That goal tally has taken his efforts for the club to a supremely eye-catching 54 strikes.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/?post_type=web-story&p=664142″ title=”Check out the latest Celtic news!”]

These returns have seen the player who HNTV commentator Damir Petravic claimed can “sprint like Mbappe” average an astonishing SofaScore match rating of 7.34, not only ranking him as Gorica’s best performer in the league but also as the sixth-best player in the division as a whole.

As such, with Postecoglou having already added a player who bagged 23 J1 League goals in Maeda to their ranks this winter, the further addition of a player as deadly in front of goal as he is creative in Lovric would appear to be an extremely wise move for the 56-year-old manager this month.

That’s particularly if the 26-year-old is available for considerably less than his reported £5m asking price last summer.

A round-up of the opening round of matches of Sri Lanka’s Under-23 Youth Tournament Division 1 2010-11

Sa'adi Thawfeeq06-Jul-2010Sri Lanka’s 2010-11 domestic season began with the Under-23 Youth Tournament Division 1 matches being played over three days instead of the usual two as in the past. Sri Lanka Cricket tournament committee chairman, Ravi de Silva, said that the idea to make it a three-day tournament came from the selection committee chairman Aravinda de Silva, who wanted the younger cricketers to get used to playing for longer hours in the middle. He however stated that it would not enjoy first-class status because of the age limit.”It is a brilliant idea because this age group is the platform for young cricketers to build their future careers,” Ravi said. “We want the players to play longer innings and for bowlers to bowl longer spells. It has been done for the longevity of Sri Lanka cricket.”The tournament got off to a flying start with former Sri Lanka Under-19 World Cup captain Ashan Priyanjan hitting twin centuries for Tamil Union against Colombo Colts in a drawn match at Havelock Park. Premier League Tier A champions Chilaw Marians showed they had plenty of talent in their reserve bench when their U-23 side thrashed Burgher RC by an innings and 68 runs at the BRC grounds. Offspinner Umesh Karunaratne’s match haul of eight wickets coupled with Buddhi Samarawickrame’s cautious unbeaten knock of 111 off 235 balls contributed to the victory.Ragama CC and Bloomfield also began their campaign in style with victories over Moratuwa SC and Air Force SC respectively. The left-arm spin of Sameera Perera (match haul of 10 for 123) and Kaushalya Gajasinghe’s century (123) were responsible for Ragama’s win at De Soysa Stadium in Moratuwa. An opening stand of 193 between Nipun Karunanayake (100) and captain Madawa Warnapura (93), laid the foundation for Bloomfield’s victory at Rifle Green. Despite running up the highest total for the week – 403 for 9 declared, Sinhalese SC ran short of time to pull off a victory over Seeduwa Raddoluwa CC at the SSC grounds. SSC had the visitors on their knees at 160 for 9 in their second innings after forcing them to follow-on, but with the ninth wicket falling off the penultimate ball of the match, the last ball was negotiated safely much to the relief of Seeduwa Raddoluwa. The legspin of Sanka Ramesh Abeyruwan (match haul of 7 for 63) and fast bowling of Suresh Wickrema (match haul of 6 for 139) proved decisive but not quite.Moors SC held the strong Nondescripts CC to a draw at NCC grounds. Moors captain Chaturanga de Silva (97 and 41) and Yasoda Lanka (86 and 78) ensured Moors come out honourably despite NCC gaining a 104-run first innings lead.

Everton must complete Garner transfer

Everton have had a rather dismal season in the Premier League under Rafa Benitez with just five wins, four draws and nine defeats under their belt after 18 games played.

One figure that hasn’t been a particular regular player for the Toffees in the league this season that has failed to impress on the occasions that he has played is midfielder Andre Gomes.

With just seven league appearances and two starts under his belt in this current campaign, Gomes has only managed to earn himself an overall performance rating of 6.2/10 from WhoScored, making him the lowest-rated Everton player to have started more than one league game.

Despite scoring a goal and putting in a respectable performance in their recent FA Cup win over Hull City at the weekend, one good outing against a Championship club may not be enough to convince the fans that he’s good enough to continue in an Everton shirt, even though his current contract at Goodison Park isn’t set to expire until the summer of 2024.

Having been linked with a move to Benfica during the previous summer transfer window, Gomes’ days at Everton could be numbered if he doesn’t fix up his form in the Premier League and help the team turn their fortunes around throughout the remainder of the season.

With the Goodison Park outfit reportedly interested in Manchester United’s 20-year-old midfielder James Garner, who is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest and was part of the team that beat Arsenal in the FA Cup, this potential move could pave the way for Rafa Benitez to axe Gomes and replace him with a young prospect that could be a long-term figure for the Toffees.

Labelled as an “aggressive” player on the pitch by Red Devils midfielder Bruno Fernandes, Garner has proven himself to be more of a useful midfield option for Forest than Gomes has for Everton this season with the loanee racking up a higher average of passes per game and pass succession than the Portuguese international has managed to do in the Premier League according to WhoScored.

While it could be seen as a risk to sign the youngster when his loan deal at Forest ends in the summer given his small amount of experience in the Premier League, it could end up being a risk worth taking for Benitez if he can push Gomes out the door and hit the ground running at Goodison. Should that happen, then the Everton manager will have undoubtedly struck gold in the transfer market.

Match prospects improve with the weather

If Bangladesh win the third ODI against Mirpur, they will have not lost an ODI series against major opposition for the first time ever

The Preview by George Binoy10-Oct-2010Match FactsMonday, October 11, Mirpur
Start time 09:00 local (03:00 GMT)Shakib Al Hasan’s performance will be pivotal to Bangladesh’s chances of pulling off another upset•Associated PressThe Big PictureNew Zealand’s best-laid plans of preparing for the 2011 World Cup by scheduling series in each of the host nations are being laid to waste. They went to Sri Lanka first, to give their inexperienced team insight into the conditions there, but didn’t perform adequately enough to make the tri-series final. A tour of India will follow, but only after their ongoing assignment in Bangladesh, where a depression over the Bay of Bengal has caused enough rain to wreck their first ten days in the country. Both warm-ups were washed out, as was an international, and the only ODI New Zealand played ended in a nine-run defeat on D/L terms. There was, though, a shimmer of hope ahead of Monday’s match. The intensity of the depression had eased and the sun shone, albeit briefly, on the eve of the third ODI, allowing the Shere-e-Bangla Stadium time to recover from all the rain. New Zealand, who have been confined indoors for a while, were finally able to practice outside and get a feel of Mirpur. Brendon McCullum, their opening batsman, spoke of a sense of frustration at the weather, and hoped New Zealand would be able to play the remaining three games. Trailing 1-0 in the five-ODI series, they now have to win three in a row to leave Bangladesh with a trophy. The hosts have challenges of their own to overcome. They are without Mashrafe Mortaza and Nazmul Hossain, both of whom were involved in the victory but are ruled out by injury. More importantly, however, they face the challenge of achieving collective consistency. If not for Shakib Al Hasan’s quality all-round performance, it’s likely that New Zealand would have taken the series lead and Bangladesh will find it hard to string wins together on the back of a single man’s performance. All of the top six batsman got to double figures in the first ODI, but only Shakib made it past 40. It’s an issue their opening batsman, Shariar Nafees, said needed urgent addressing. Bangladesh are one win away from not losing the series, an accomplishment they’ve never achieved against a major opposition, not counting a weakened West Indies.Form guide (most recent, completed matches)

Watch out for…New Zealand’s opening batsmen, Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder, are among the most watchable opening pairs in international cricket today. McCullum is forever innovating, opening up previously unexploited regions with inventive stroke play, while Ryder possesses oodles of talent. He’s also remarkably quick for someone who could be several kilos lighter. They added 53 in 6.5 overs in the first ODI before Ryder fell. The goal will be to convert an explosive start into something more damaging.Shakib Al Hasan is Bangladesh’s captain again for the remainder of the series because of Mortaza’s injury. He is also their most valuable match-winner, especially in the absence of Tamim Iqbal. He made 58 in the first game and his four wickets were crucial in dragging New Zealand below the D/L equation. A lesser performance from him and Bangladesh will struggle to make it 2-0.Pitch and conditionsThe Mirpur square has spent a lot of time under covers and McCullum expected it to not change too much from the way it played in the first game – slow without massive turn. The rains had eased considerably on the eve of the match but there was some showers forecast for Monday. Tottenham: BBC make Lewis-Potter claim

BBC journalist David Burns has now shared an interesting Tottenham Hotspur transfer update as their ‘scouting guru’ David Pleat is spotted on a Monday mission.

The Lowdown: Lilywhites eye Championship stars…

Over the last few months, there have been no shortage of links to some of the second tier’s most promising young stars.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, the likes of Ronnie Edwards (Peterborough) and Nottingham Forest defender Djed Spence, currently on loan there from Middlesbrough, have been repeatedly mentioned as Spurs targets for the summer.

Lilywhites transfer chief Fabio Paratici and manager Antonio Conte are seemingly leaving no stone unturned as they scour the market for fresh additions at N17.

Keane Lewis-Potter, who was subject to a possible bid from Spurs in the January transfer window, is another head-turning young name on their radar.

Tottenham, and by extension Conte, are believed to still be eyeing the forward past their winter links (The Mail), with Burns now sharing another update on their interest.

The Latest: Burns shares Lewis-Potter update involving Pleat…

It appears that Tottenham are firmly keeping watch over Lewis-Potter with the BBC Radio Humberside reporter claiming their ‘scouting guru’ Pleat was running the rule over him on Monday as Hull faced off against Millwall.

As well as the 21-year-old, Burns suspects that Tigers centre-back Jacob Greaves was also being monitored by Pleat and Spurs.

“Very interested to see David Pleat, Spurs scouting guru, coming into the ground,” he explained (via Twitter).

“He’s watching KLP and I suspect Greaves.”

The Verdict: Take it further?

Reportedly worth around £20 million, Lewis-Potter could require significant investment on part of Paratici and chairman Daniel Levy.

However, still very young and homegrown, the Englishman has also been a real mainstay under head coach Shota Arveladze over 2021/2022 – even notching the most goals and assists (9G, 3A) combined for Hull in the Championship (WhoScored).

Averaging more shots at goal per 90 than any Tigers ace in that time (2.2), it’s clear Lewis-Potter is a proven threat, with his rapid progress in a tough division elevating the starlet’s value.

As Paratici and co reportedly eye around five major signings for Conte in the summer, it will be interesting to see whether Tottenham take more concrete action over the winger who former manager Grant McCann called ‘special’.

Journo makes claim on Barkley to Everton

Everton have been one of the most active Premier League clubs in the transfer window so far, and for good reason when you take a look at the poor performances Rafa Benitez’s side have put on this season.

However, they have now been linked with a third signing but it is predicted not to be one that the fans would welcome.

What’s the word?

Journalist, Paul Brown, has given his perspective on the rumour that Everton are interested in bringing Ross Barkley back to Goodison Park during the January transfer window.

Brown told GIVEMESPORT:

“It’s very strange they’ve been linked with Barkley at all because there’s been so much animosity with the fans, I think it would be a disaster if they tried to re-sign him.”

Everton have been speculated to be interested in signing the attacking midfielder this month, as he struggles to gain a starting position at Chelsea with just 12 appearances across all competitions this season.

Fans will be fuming

The 28-year-old left his boyhood club to make a shock move to Chelsea in the January of 2018, after making 179 appearances for the club scoring 27 goals and bagging 28 assists, with the transfer causing uproar in the Everton fanbase, who saw him as one of their own.

Benitez is already in a vulnerable position at the club, with fans planning protests against him, booing, leaving the ground early during matchday and even flying banners criticising the Spaniard but bringing Barkley back to the club could only further his fractured relationship with the fans and Brown’s warning speaks volumes.

The Everton manager and owners will need to do everything they can to regain the trust and support of the fans over the rest of the season by climbing the table into a much better position, and they will need to identify how to do that without causing further damage.

It would be interesting to see how fans react to a return for Barkley this January, but it could also be an opportunity for the midfielder to rebuild a relationship with the fans of the club he supports.

Defending champions back up in key tie

The defending champions Pakistan play Australia in a match that will be crucial to the group

Start time 1330 (1730 GMT)Shahid Afridi is a severe threat with bat and ball•Getty ImagesThe Big PictureThe defending champions play one of the first-round losers from 2009 in a match that will be crucial to the group. Pakistan started their tournament strongly with a 21-run win against Bangladesh on Saturday and are faced with the unusual situation of back-to-back games over the weekend.Australia have had a leisurely start to the campaign, which has included some training, jet-skiing and a warm-up loss to Zimbabwe. In the past two Twenty20 tournaments they have been defeated in their opening games and the coaching staff has lectured them on the importance of beginning well.Michael Clarke is in charge of his first major tournament and has a team dotted with Twenty20 specialists, although there is a feeling the outfit is still too traditional to reach the finals. David Warner, Cameron White, David Hussey, Shaun Tait and Dirk Nannes provide some specialist limited-overs knowledge and will be relied on to gain or recapture momentum. The slow St Lucia surface will have a big say on the result and there is an outside chance of up to eight spinners being employed. Pakistan should have the upper hand in both the quality of slow bowlers and their ability to play their opponents’ options.Dealing with a pace trio of Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Tait and Dirk Nannes won’t be quite as comfortable. Pakistan have recovered well since their practice loss to Zimbabwe and seem desperate to extend their global reign.Form guide (most recent first)Australia LWWWW

Watch out for…David Warner is a tiny man with massive power and a huge job at the top of Australia’s order. Warner must give Australia a swift start to allow Michael Clarke, the No.3, to have a base from which he can feel comfortable chipping the ball around. Warner owns two of the fastest fifties in Twenty20 – one took 18 balls, the other 19 – but he will have to conquer the spinners to match those efforts in this event. The last time Shahid Afridi played against Australia his stomach grumbled and he chomped at the ball. In this match the rumbling must come from his batting and bowling, which is well suited to the format. Over 28 games he has achieved a strike-rate of 144.04 with the bat and his average is 17.32 with the ball. Now he is captain and in charge of guiding the defending champions.Team newsThe big questions centre around the make-up of the spinners. Should Nathan Hauritz be the first choice despite no wickets in the lead-up games? Do they want the big-hitting of Steven Smith as well as his legspinners? And can they both fit into the side? Michael Clarke and David Hussey will chip in with overs as well. Ryan Harris, a late replacement for Brett Lee, will almost certainly be allowed some extra rest but the other 14 players in the squad are available.

Hauritz was surprised by the lack of speed during the practice games in St Lucia. “It was slower than what we’re used to,” he said. “We’re going to have to adapt to it very quickly.” The Pakistanis also felt the conditions were difficult during their opening success. Scattered showers are tipped for Sunday along with a top temperature of 30C.Stats and trivia Pakistan have a relatively fresh squad but they still have more experience than Australia. Afridi’s men have appeared in 188 T20 internationals to their rivals’ 153 Kamran Akmal (29), Shahid Afridi (28) and Misbah-ul-Haq (24) have all played more than 20 matches, while Michael Clarke (24) is the only Australian to have managed that many The teams met in the semi-final of the inaugural World Twenty20, with Pakistan winning by six wickets in Johannesburg. They have played three times overall, with Pakistan victorious twiceQuotes”On these types of tracks he’d be very difficult for the opposition.”
Shahid Afridi wants Nathan Hauritz to play. But does he really think he’ll be a threat or does he just want to face him?

“They’re not going to be bowling short. They’re going to be bowling full and they’re going to be going further. So we’ll see what happens.”
David Warner is eying the straight boundaries in this tournament

Rangers must sign Akinkunmi Amoo

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s first transfer window in charge of Rangers has been a rather uneventful one at Ibrox.

They have secured the acquisition of James Sands and let Nathan Patterson walk out the door, while the Gers have agreed to bring John Souttar to the club on a pre-contract arrangement too.

However, it looks as though Ross Wilson and co could bring an offensive player into their ranks before the window closes next Monday.

One player regularly linked with a move to Glasgow is Bologna’s winger Andreas Skov Olsen, but according to one source, that now looks unlikely.

As a result, van Bronckhorst must urgently work on a deal to bring Akinkunmi Amoo to Scotland.

It’s thought Rangers are plotting a late move for the Nigerian teenager who is plying his trade in Sweden for Hammarby.

Valued at £3.6m by Transfermarkt, a move might not be cheap to complete but it’s clear he possesses all the tools to thrive in Scottish football.

In short, he’d not only be the perfect Skov Olsen alternative, but also a player capable of linking up with new loan signing Amad Diallo in devastating fashion on the flanks. After all, Amoo is a box of trickery, capable of beating opponents for fun and also scoring goals on a regular basis.

A review from Hammarby’s director of football, Jesper Jansson, tells you all you need to know about the 19-year-old star: “With Akin, we get an explosive, skilled and offensive player with a nice left foot,” he said.

That sounds incredibly exciting and when you combine those offensive attributes with his numbers, a deal simply has to be completed.

Amoo has scored 13 goals and registered six assists across his 48 appearances for his current club and although it’s difficult to compare the Swedish and Scottish top-flight, he has performed in European football before.

What also makes this deal attractive is his age, with the youngster possessing a wonderful amount of potential, something van Bronckhorst will undoubtedly be hoping he realises at Rangers.

There are only a few days left in the winter window but he must be someone the club pursue strongly.

They may have agreed a deal for a winger already in Diallo but they cannot stop there; the duo has the potential to frighten defences up and down the country.

Ponting cannot survive another defeat – Vaughan

England’s former Ashes-winning captain, Michael Vaughan, believes that Ricky Ponting’s reign as Australia skipper will be over if he fails to recapture the urn in the forthcoming series

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Nov-2010England’s former Ashes-winning captain, Michael Vaughan, believes that Ricky Ponting’s reign as Australia skipper will be over if he fails to recapture the urn in the forthcoming series.Australia’s troubled build-up to the Ashes received another setback on Wednesday night, as they succumbed to a remarkable one-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka in the first ODI at Melbourne, despite having at one stage had their opponents on the ropes at 107 for 8.Although Ponting was not involved in that match, having passed the captaincy over to Michael Clarke, the result was nevertheless their sixth consecutive defeat in all international cricket, dating back to Pakistan’s victory at Headingley in the second Test back in July, and also encompassing last month’s barren tour of India.Vaughan, who has been as vocal in the build-up to this year’s Ashes as he was silent ahead of the last tour in 2006-07, when injury forced him onto the sidelines during Australia’s 5-0 whitewash, believes that every new set-back is a boost for England, who have been quietly building towards Friday’s first warm-up match against Western Australia, having arrived in Perth over the weekend.”Another knock of confidence,” wrote Vaughan on Twitter in the aftermath of the MCG match. “Lots of people seem to be taking great pleasure from the fact Australia keep losing… long may it continue…”Ponting was in charge during the whitewash four years ago, but his reputation was badly dented last summer, as he became the first Australian captain since Billy Murdoch in the 19th Century to lose two Ashes series in England. In Vaughan’s opinion, there is no way he can stay in the job if he fails to make amends in the coming series.”If he loses the series he will go,” said Vaughan. “He has lost the Ashes twice and hasn’t won an Ashes in England either. Obviously he won the 06-07 Ashes 5-0 but he had a better team to manage those days but now he has a team that is almost back in the ranks of normal cricket teams.”His record in Australia is phenomenal but he will have to be at his best, both as a captain and as a batsman, to put England under pressure,” added Vaughan. “It’s harder being a captain when you don’t have the ammunition in your bowling attack that includes the likes of Warne, McGrath and Gillespie.”He doesn’t have the X-factor bowlers who can change games. That puts your batsmen under a lot more pressure because they know that you have to get lots more runs to give your bowlers something to bowl at. If they’d have got 300 a few years ago, they knew that Warne and McGrath would get them back in the game, but now they need 400 plus to really put England under pressure.”Warne, for his part, hit back in the war of words when he suggested to Vaughan, via Twitter, that he shouldn’t get too carried away just yet. “yeah yeah yeah, whatever bud [sic],” he wrote. “Your ( poms ) are very cocky at present , Mmmmm could end in tears for you all, just chill !”
