Rangers Closing In On "Superb" £15k-p/w Star

Rangers are closing in on the signing of Kieran Dowell, having reached a verbal agreement with the Norwich City midfielder, according to a recent report from Football Insider.

What's the latest Rangers transfer news?

Michael Beale appears to be keen to get a lot of his transfer business done early, as the manager is reportedly close to signing Crystal Palace goalkeeper Jack Butland, who would be very keen to make the switch to Ibrox.

With Scott Arfield set to leave the Gers this summer, Beale is also tasked with strengthening in midfield, and he has his sights set on Liverpool's Leighton Clarkson, who has spent the 2022-23 campaign on loan at Aberdeen.

Celtic will do battle with Rangers for Clarkson's signature, and the Old Firm rivals are also set to go head-to-head to compete for Denis Huseinbasic, with the FC Koln midfielder attracting the attention of a number of clubs from across Europe.

According to a report from Football Insider, the Light Blues are now close to completing their first summer signing, as Dowell has verbally agreed to a three-year contract at Ibrox, with his departure from Norwich recently being confirmed. The 25-year-old is said to have already completed a medical, and he is now set to put pen to paper on a deal with the Gers, having snubbed an offer to remain at Carrow Road.

Barring any late issues, the Glasgow club are now confident about signing the midfielder, who will be available on a free transfer upon the expiration of his contract with Norwich.

Will Kieran Dowell be a success at Rangers?

The Ormskirk-born playmaker is able to play in a number of positions, having featured on both wings and in an advanced midfield role throughout his career, and versatility is always a very important attribute for any player to have.

Hailed as "superb" by Norwich boss David Wagner, the Everton academy graduate has weighed in with five goals and three assists in 23 Championship appearances this season, a decent return, given that his campaign has been hampered by injury.

Norwich's Kieran Dowell and Josh Sargent celebrating a goal.

That said, the £15k-per-week maestro may feel he still has a point to prove, having never really managed to hit the heights he reached in the 2017-18 season, picking up nine goals and four assists in a fantastic stint with Nottingham Forest.

A move north of the border could offer Dowell the opportunity to reignite his career, and he is definitely a worthwhile signing for Rangers, particularly considering his availability on a free transfer.

Liverpool Could Sign Casemiro 2.0 In £60m Machine

Liverpool's woes have been well-documented this season and the prestigious Premier League outfit will be scouring the transfer market for signings to bolster the ranks and ascend to prominence once more this summer.

The Reds have fallen by the wayside this term and have struggled to replicate previous feats under manager Jurgen Klopp's galvanising leadership.

The dynasty that has been crafted has indeed returned Liverpool to the front of the European pack, with every major honour – barring the Europa League – gleaned during the German's tenure.

This season, inexplicably, this squad of proven winners have failed to exude half the previous confidence and swagger, and despite constructing a six-match winning streak at this late stage of the campaign, remain outsiders in the race for Champions League football.

Bolstering the ranks is indeed imperative to cementing future success, and as such rumours of interest for Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha could prove to be worthwhile for the return to the top.

According to Football Insider, Aston Villa are willing to meet Fulham's £60m asking price for the Portuguese titan, which could prompt Klopp to ramp up his own interest in the gem and secure the signature of a man who could have a transformative effect on the Anfield midfield.

Should Liverpool sign Joao Palhinha?

The Cottagers completed the signing of Palhinha from Sporting Lisbon for £20m upon their return to the top-flight last year, a transfer for a new midfield anchor which proved to be one of the Premier League summer market's finest moves.

Having made 37 appearances this season, scoring four goals, the 27-year-old has succeeded in leading his side as a talismanic central engine to stability after years of uncertainty, with Fulham indeed perched in tenth place after 35 matches, six points above stricken Chelsea.

As per Sofascore, the 20-cap Portugal international has recorded a 7.05 league rating and has dazzled with his assurance on the ball – completing 84% of his passes – and his tenacity as an unrelenting destroyer – making 4.3 tackles and 1.8 clearances per outing – to provide Fulham with one of the sturdiest protections in the division.

Joao-Palhinha-Fulham

In fact, the £50k-per-week colossus ranks among the top 1% of midfielders across Europe's big five leagues for tackles, the top 9% for clearances and the top 8% for aerials won per 90, as per FBref, with journalist Zach Lowy even likening him to imperious Manchester United monster Casemiro.

If Liverpool were to forge ahead with a move, they could seal a bargain new holding midfielder to reignite their cohesion and potency in the centre, with prominent target Declan Rice reportedly available this summer.

According to Sky Sports, the West Ham United man – who is also of interest to Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United – is touted at a jaw-dropping £120m by his outfit, which is double the reported price of Palhinha.

The Portuguese ranks above both Rice and Casemiro for tackles won in the Premier League this season; in fact, Palhinha ranks above everyone: making 139 tackles thus far, and second-placed Brighton & Hove Albion workhorse Moises Caicedo boasts 93, a staggering and commendable gulf.

For such a robust and gritty option in Fulham's "machine", as Palhinha was described by teammate Harrison Reed, to cost so much less than the likes of Rice, it opens the question as to why Liverpool should part with such a considerable sum when wholesale changes are needed immediately.

Palhinha over Rice should be a no-brainer when considering the exorbitant fees thrown around by the Hammers camp.

Chad Soper’s maiden List A five-wicket haul, and half-centuries from Assad Vala (69*) and Vani Morea (53) led Papua New Guinea to a six-wicket win in their World Cricket League Championship match against Kenya.Soper, the right-arm medium-pacer, took five wickets within four overs and ended with 5 for 27 in nine overs to help PNG bowl Kenya out for 188. PNG’s top order then made solid contributions to steer them past the target in 34.3 overs. PNG’s third win of the competition helped them tie Kenya on six points, but were a rung below, at fifth place, on account of a poorer net run rate. After losing the toss, PNG had reduced Kenya to 52 for 3, but wicketkeeper-batsman Irfan Karim (73*) held one end up. Karim began the recovery through a 56-run fourth-wicket stand with captain Rakep Patel. Patel was run out for 39 in the 30th over, but Gurdeep Singh helped add 42 more with Karim. Once Gurdeep was caught for 33 at the score of 150, Soper wiped out the lower order in quick time. He took all the remaining wickets from the 41st to 47th over as Kenya lost their last five batsmen for 16 runs.PNG openers Morea and Lega Siaka made a solid start to the chase, putting on 42 in just 7.1 overs. Elijah Otieno, Kenya’s new-ball bowler, broke through by having Siaka caught for 24 before Vala and Morea added 84 for the second wicket. Kenya’s other opening bowler, Nehemiah Odhiambo, then struck with the wickets of Morea and Sese Bau in quick succession to leave PNG on 131 for 3. Mahuru Dai added 52 for the fifth wicket with Vala and the two almost saw their team through but Dai fell for 27. Vala stayed unbeaten after completing his fourth one-day half-century.

Khawaja finds his peace in the middle

Australia batsman Usman Khawaja has said that the shattering death of Phillip Hughes and his Muslim faith has contributed to a more balanced outlook on the game

Daniel Brettig01-Jun-2016Usman Khawaja has always batted with a certain grace. His languid movements and supple wrists have combined for a visual style that suggests ease and peace, and a sense of time to spare enjoyed by only the very best players. But until fairly recently, the image was also something of an illusion. Khawaja’s technique may have looked smooth, but inside his head turmoil and worry raged. He was unsure of his place in the game, and his future in the Australian team. This fretfulness played out over a handful of Test matches that reaped only two half centuries and many slim scores.Ahead of Australia’s triangular series against the West Indies and South Africa, Khawaja has spoken of how the shattering death of Phillip Hughes contributed to a more balanced outlook on the game, and how his Muslim faith has helped him to retain it. The proof of Khawaja’s development can be found in his performance, peeling off century after century last summer and winning an all-format place in Australia’s plans.”We obviously lost Hughesy and I did my knee in the space of two weeks, so it was a pretty rough time,” Khawaja told reporters in Guyana. “So you just sort of learn to let go a little bit.”When I first came into the Australian team I wanted to make such a good impression and to do so much and so well, which is normal for a young kid. Now I’m just more relaxed about it all. What’s meant to be is meant to be.”I train really hard, I do the right things at training, and then when the game time comes I just try and compete and if it’s good enough, it’s good enough. If it’s not, so be it.”Cricket Australia has highlighted Khawaja’s Pakistani background and Muslim belief as signs of the game’s diverse future down under, but the man himself has been reticent at times to speak of a personal faith. However his development as a cricketer links directly to the sense of peace and perspective it gives him these days, meaning Khawaja was this time a little more expansive.”The game can be quite tough at times and stressful and emotional,” he said. “So you have to find a way to bring yourself back to your centre. Everyone does that in different ways. I have my own way and I do it because you play so much cricket and so much is going on, you can sometimes forget about that sort of stuff. It’s a good question because it happens a lot.”I pray. That’s what keeps me centred. The number one most important thing in my life is religion. That comes first and that helps me with everything else, cricket included. I haven’t become any more religious. I think I’ve just found a happy medium of religion helping me with life in general.”It sort of happens when something as big as what happened a couple of years ago with Hughesy happens. I think everyone took it in a different way. Everyone finds different avenues and aspects so that’s one big one for me.”In the Caribbean, Khawaja will again be pitched into a contest for places in the batting order, as the likes of Aaron Finch, David Warner and the captain Steven Smith all lay claim to places in the top three. Once upon a time this may have worried Khawaja, bringing anxiety and nerves close to the surface and clouding his method with the bat.But this time it will be more likely he takes events in his stride, whether cuffing balls to the boundary or running drinks for others. It’s not the end of the world, after all.”Obviously I love opening but I know that Finchy and Davey have been doing it for a while too, so I understand that and I’m glad to be part of this team,” Khawaja said. “I wasn’t around at all last year or the year before that, so I don’t look that far ahead. All that stuff has no bearing on me, it’s the selectors and coaches, they make those decisions and I just try to go out there and play cricket to the best of my ability. I’d be happy to play anywhere in the top order, but we’ve got a lot of very good players here too, so it just depends what happens.”

Worrying Sunderland Injury News Ahead of Playoff Semi-Final

Sunderland are worried about the fitness of Lynden Gooch and Dennis Cirkin ahead of their League One playoff semi-final against Luton Town on Saturday.

Additionally, manager Tony Mowbray fears that Aji Alese and Dan Ballard will not feature in the semi-final.

What's the Sunderland vs Luton team news?

Chronicle Live's James Hunter reports that while Alese is edging closer to an injury return, the semi-final will likely come too early for the 22-year-old defender.

The 6 foot 3 centre-back has been out since early March out due to a thigh injury sustained during a defeat to Stoke City. Alese was previously ruled out for the rest of the season but has since been training with physios, but will not play apart in Sunderland's hopes to reach the playoff final.

Ballard is also likely to be unavailable for the semi-final. He has also been out since March after picking up a hamstring injury while away on international duty with Northern Ireland. There was previous hope that he might feature in the second leg but that now appears remote.

And the Black Cats are now worried about the fitness of Gooch and Cirkin ahead of their League One playoff semi-final against Luton Town on Saturday. Although they haven't trained yet, Gooch and Cirkin will take part in a final session on Saturday – a late fitness test will be done to determine their availability.

The two players are really important for Mowbray. After a brilliant display against Huddersfield, Mowbray singled Cirkin out for individual praise, saying: "Dennis is an aggressive, powerful guy and you just have to keep pushing him to believe in himself. He's undoubtedly got Premier League qualities, he's a powerful unit who can nick goals for you."

Gooch, who Mowbray called a "warrior" would also be a miss if he was unable to pass a fitness test.

What was Tony Mowbray's injury update?

"I think Dan's too far away at this moment to make these games [against Luton]. They come pretty quickly – Saturday-Tuesday – so I don't think Dan Ballard is going to make it.

"Aji has been out there with the physios today, side-footing volleys and running in and out of cones, but he hasn’t kicked a ball for nine weeks. I don’t think [he could play].

"The team have done amazingly well and have just won away to Preston 3-0. I'm not sitting here thinking we desperately need to get these players back in straight away.

"They would help, of course, and it would be great to be able to put a player or two on the bench that would enable us to get them on if we needed to see a game out. But I'm not sure that's going to happen."

Tottenham: Spurs After Pochettino-Esque Manager To Replace Conte

Tottenham Hotspur are chasing a young, hungry manager in the mould of 2014 Mauricio Pochettino, according to a report by The Evening Standard.

What's the latest Spurs manager news?

The Lilywhites have little time left to officially appoint a permanent manager before the commencement of this summer's transfer window, with just two games of the Premier League season remaining.

Spurs have also reportedly ruled out appointing former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann, who is no longer in contention to succeed Conte despite his status as a free agent.

The north Londoners are thought to be chasing a plethora of in-work managers, though, with Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim, Feyenoord's Arne Slot and Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi among the names to have been linked recently.

Spurs are also thought to be on the lookout for a new sporting director, as Fabio Paratici was forced to resign from his post recently, having lost an appeal against his 30-month worldwide ban from football.

Back to their manager search, Spurs players had been mooted with an interest in re-appointing former boss Pochettino, but the club opted against a move for their ex-manager who has joined Chelsea.

Mauricio Pochettino

Journalist Dan Kilpatrick, writing for The Standard, has given some background as to why – with supporters once calling for their former boss to come back.

He says Tottenham are looking for a "young, hungry, up-and-coming" manager in the mould of Pochettino in 2014, but not quite the man himself, with the 2023 version of the Argentine not fitting this profile.

This information has come from "sources close" to Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, with Pochettino being a decade older, more experienced and a different coach.

Who should Spurs hire instead?

We believe, now both Nagelsmann and Pochettino are out of the running, that Feyenoord's Slot could be a brilliant candidate if Spurs can prise him away from the Netherlands.

The 44-year-old encourages an attack-minded brand of football which could excite Spurs supporters, with Dutch football expert Marcel van der Kraan claiming he is a forward-thinking "maniac".

Van Der Kraan explained to talkSPORT:

“He is very similar to Pep Guardiola, his ideas are very similar, he is a massive fan of Pep and he plays the same time.“He goes ultra-attacking, he is almost like a maniac. Not on the touchline but it is fantastic to see how he has turned an average side into a wonderful attacking machine."

This philosophy will be of serious interest to the Spurs fanbase, who have long been subject to the more dogmatic styles of Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Conte in recent years.
