Luke Wells and Ben Brown both made big hundreds as Sussex piled on the runs against Glamorgan on the third day of their Specsavers County Championship match at Hove.Wells scored 181 and Brown an undefeated 159 as they shared a partnership of 294 in 73.1 overs, the second-highest for the fifth wicket in Sussex’s history. But a turgid pitch still looks like being the only winner. After declaring with a first-innings lead of 217 on 552 for five, Steve Magoffintrapped Nick Selman lbw in the seventh over but Mark Wallace and nightwatchman Owen Morgan saw Glamorgan to 30 for one at stumps, 187 behind.Glamorgan paid a heavy price for handing Wells a life on 56 when he was missed at second slip by Aneurin Donald off Tim van der Gugten. He didn’t offer a chance thereafter as he reached his third hundred of the season.Brown gave him excellent support as he rediscovered the form which brought him 1,031 Championship runs in Division One last season, but their task was made easier by a surface on which batting was relatively straightforward.Glamorgan plugged away but their fast-bowling spearhead Michael Hogan was restricted to 10 overs as he continued to recover from mild concussion when he was hit on the helmet on the second day.Graham Wagg did remove Luke Wright for 19 when the Sussex captain lost his off stump playing no shot but Sussex accumulated remorselessly after that as Wells and Brown set a new record for any wicket against Glamorgan, beating the 281 by John Langridge and Harry Parks at Eastbourne in 1938.Wells guided van der Gugten through the vacant slip area for his 10th four to reach his century and Brown got to his off the last ball before tea when he cut slow left-armer Morgan to the point boundary. As Wells inevitably tired towards the end of an innings which ended four minutes short of seven hours, Brown upped the tempo after tea as Sussex sped towards their declaration.A dab to the third-man fence took him to 150 for only the second time in his career. Wells then struck a straight six – only the 16th of his career – before offering a sharp return catch to Morgan off the next ball. Wells’ 181 came off343 balls and he also hit 18 fours.Brown’s 159 not out was only four short of his career best and came off 225 balls with 15 fours and a maximum. With skipper Jacques Rudolph nursing a badly bruised hand, Glamorgan’s 46-year-old coach Robert Croft was among five substitute fielders employed.

Pakistan square series with famous ten-wicket victory

A typically erratic burst of brilliance from Wahab Riaz cracked England’s resistance on the fourth afternoon at the Kia Oval, as Pakistan swarmed towards a famous series-levelling victory

The Report by Andrew Miller14-Aug-2016Pakistan 542 (Younis 218, Shafiq 109) and 42 for 0 (Azhar 30*, Aslam 12*) beat England 328 (Moeen 108, Sohail 5-68) and 253 (Bairstow 81, Yasir 5-71) by ten wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsA typically erratic burst of brilliance from Wahab Riaz cracked England’s resistance on the fourth afternoon at the Kia Oval, as Pakistan finished their Test series in the same magnificent style with which they had begun it at Lord’s last month, by swarming to a famous series-levelling victory in the fourth and final Test against England.Set 40 for victory after overcoming some stiff but ultimately futile resistance from England’s lower-middle order, Pakistan had recouped 16 of those before tea, before romping to a ten-wicket victory in the space of 20 minutes after the resumption, thanks to the efforts of Sami Aslam and Azhar Ali, to whom the honour of the winning hit, high into the pavilion, eventually fell.England had resumed the contest with four wickets already squandered, and a stiff deficit of 126 runs still to be overcome, but they summoned the last vestiges of their intent and determination, largely thanks to Jonny Bairstow’s 81 from 127 balls, to stave off an innings defeat and extend the contest into the day’s final session. However, after Pakistan had chiselled out two vital wickets in a nervy morning’s work, the return of Wahab’s fierce pace in the first hour after lunch was the moment at which all hope for England was blown away.Wahab’s impact in his first spell had been tempered by the attentions of umpire Bruce Oxenford, who handed him his second warning for following through on the pitch. Given how futile his efforts have been to combat a series-long no-ball problem, Wahab’s expulsion from the attack was only ever a matter of time. And sure enough, his day’s work was brought to a premature end two balls into his 12th over when Oxenford handed him his third and final strike.By then, however, the only two balls of his spell that really mattered had already come and gone. Charging in for his first over of the afternoon session with the sort of startling impact that only bowlers of genuine pace can create, Wahab got rid of each of England’s last two recognised batsmen, Bairstow and Chris Woakes, in consecutive deliveries to reduce England to 209 for 8.The timing of his intervention was as shattering as the spell itself, coming as it did with England a mere five runs shy of parity, and with two in-form men at the crease who might well have backed themselves to eke out the sort of three-figured lead that could have put their opponents under pressure in the fourth innings. Instead, in the blink of an eye, England’s only remaining ambition was to avoid an innings defeat, which they duly managed to ironic cheers when Finn clipped Wahab through midwicket three overs later. The first of the big two to fall was Woakes for 4, sold a dummy at the non-striker’s end as Bairstow hopped on to the back foot to nudge a Wahab lifter for a single into the leg side, only for the bowler himself to gallop across in his follow-through, pounce on the ball and shy from five yards while still on his knees. Woakes was nowhere near getting back. One delivery later, and clearly rattled by his own misjudgement, Bairstow attempted to reassert his authority but chose the wrong ball against which to do so. More heat outside off stump from Wahab meant that Bairstow was never in position for his drive, and Azhar at short cover completed a sharp low chance to send his team-mates into ecstasy. It was hard luck on Bairstow, who up to that point had scarcely blinked in his bid to haul England back off the canvas in this contest, and in the course of his innings, he became only the second player, after VVS Laxman in 2002, to score 900-plus runs in a year batting at No. 6 or lower. After taking a handful of overs to find his range, Bairstow laid into Pakistan’s left-armers with three rifled drives for four off Amir and Wahab, as Misbah’s natural reticence – even at moments of clear dominance – translated into a slightly tentative opening gambit from his team.It was the less-heralded wiles of Sohail Khan that finally prised the opening, as Gary Ballance – who had also been lining up the left-armers with confidence as they angled the ball back into his pads – found the right-armer’s seam and swing less easy to comprehend.Sohail’s fourth delivery of the morning was a triumph of line and length, as he pitched the ball on the left-hander’s off stump, found a modicum of movement off the seam and some steepling extra bounce to take the edge and climb through to Sarfraz Ahmed.Moeen Ali, coming off the back of a brilliant first-innings hundred, immediately got off the mark with a flicked four off the pads and he too resolved to remain as fluent as possible as England sought to chip away at their deficit. For the best part of an hour, Moeen and Bairstow blotted out the match situation in a brisk 65-run stand for the sixth wicket, as England revived some timely memories of the match-turning alliance that the same pair had produced from a similarly dicey position in the third Test at Edgbaston.Yasir Shah, whose confidence appeared to have been restored by his three-wicket burst on the third evening, struggled at first for the same impact and Moeen cashed in with a yawning straight six over long-on.But, with five minutes to go until lunch, and having begun to find a decent rhythm from around the wicket as he targeted the rough outside the left-hander’s off stump, Yasir claimed the big breakthrough with the one that went straight on. Anticipating the spin, Moeen was instead suckered by extra bounce, and Sarfraz behind the stumps took a sharp edge with a hint of a juggle. It was the prompter that Yasir needed to get back onto the offensive, and soon after Wahab’s twin interventions, Pakistan’s legspinner completed his series as he had begun it so memorably at Lord’s, wrapping up his sixth five-wicket haul in 16 Tests when Stuart Broad sent an attempted reverse sweep to Younis Khan at slip.It meant that Yasir finished the series with 19 wickets at 40.73 – but 15 at 18.13 in his two Tests in London. He now has a grand total of 95 wickets in 16 Tests, and had it not been for his anonymous showings in Pakistan’s two mid-series defeats at Old Trafford and Edgbaston, he would surely have raced past George Lohmann’s 120-year old record and become the fastest bowler to reach 100 wickets in Tests.Yasir could not apply the coup de grace to England’s innings. That honour instead went to the debutant Iktikhar Ahmed, who brought an end to some spirited defiance from England’s final pair, and picked up his maiden Test wicket, when he extracted an lbw verdict against James Anderson for 17.With nothing less than a miracle required to salvage the contest, Alastair Cook threw the ball to his likeliest wicket-takers, Woakes and Steven Finn, only for the latter to limp out of the attack after two deliveries after picking up a hamstring strain. It was an apt finale to a series in which each of England’s forward strides seemed to have been matched by an equal leap in the opposite direction. For Pakistan, however, the glory was absolute – sealed by Azhar with a mighty six into the top tier of the pavilion off Moeen, and on their nation’s Independence Day holiday to boot.As the players posed on the outfield with a large Pakistani flag before embarking on a lap of honour, they could reflect on a stunning series draw that not only denied England their stated goal of holding all the series trophies against all nine of their Test opponents, but reaffirmed their own prospects of achieving the unthinkable and rising to become the No.1 nation in the world. For a side that has not played a single match on home soil in more than seven years, that would be a glory without parallel.

Insider Calls Liverpool £40m+ Sale Rumour "Madness"

Journalist Dean Jones has called the recent rumours linking Andy Robertson with a move from Liverpool to Real Madrid "madness".

What are the latest Andy Robertson transfer rumours?

It's not been the best season for Jurgen Klopp and co, as evidenced by the fact that they won't be playing in the Champions League next term.

With that being the case, the Reds may look to be pretty active in the summer as they offload some squad members and look to rejuvenate the team with new signings.

And it appears that one stalwart under Klopp could potentially be on his way out. Indeed, Robertson has been linked with a £40m+ move to Los Blancos by the Daily Mail this week.

While speaking about it all on the Chasing Green Arrows YouTube channel, Jones couldn't believe what he'd seen after spotting the rumour.

He said before laughing: “Did you see Robertson was linked with Real Madrid yesterday? Madness.”

Would Klopp sell Robertson to Real Madrid?

Klopp certainly has been a big fan of Robertson over the years and has dished out praise this term too. After a win over Newcastle, the manager praised the defender's willingness to work hard right up until the last minute.

He told the press (via Daily Mail): "Then you see Andy Robertson, in minute 93, going on a 150mph sprint – that's absolutely exceptional."

And the two really seem to trust one another, with Klopp playing Robertson 267 times over the span of his career while also winning many trophies together too – such as the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and more.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

And even when things have been tough this term, the Scotland international has stuck by his manager, saying (via All Football): "He has been calm and the backroom staff have been a different class. They are the team behind the team and they are the ones who keep us going and positive.

"When people say he is nervous or we are nervous it couldn't be further from the truth. He's probably been more 'smiley'. He is just trying to get us going and it's obviously worked."

And the left-back has continued to be a regular in the side this season having played over 40 times this term, showing that he's still very much a favourite for Klopp.

With all that in mind, it does seem quite unlikely that Liverpool would sell Robertson to Real Madrid but you never know…

Everton May Keep Hold Of "Outstanding" £33m p/w Ace

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana may stay on at Goodison Park next season despite speculation surrounding his future due to his admiration of the club, according to journalist Dean Jones.

What's the latest transfer news involving Amadou Onana?

As per i News, Everton may 'listen if there are sizeable offers' for Onana in order to fund a rebuild following their close shave with relegation this term.

The report states that Chelsea and Newcastle United are keen on the Belgium international and it is said that the Toffees' numbers in the midfield department may soften the blow of Onana potentially leaving the club.

Former Everton striker Kevin Campbell has agreed with the notion that Onana may end up being sold in the off-season, stating to Goodison News: "Let’s be totally real, Everton aren’t in the position where if the right money comes in they can hold teams off. I don’t think they’re in that position. I think they’re in a position where they have to balance the books and they have to act smart in the transfer market. “Losing players is something that Everton are going to have to deal with, because they do have some very good players and Onana is one of them who I know there will be quite a few clubs interested in him if he’s available.”

Cited by The Liverpool Echo, Onana posted an emotional message on social media following Everton's 1-0 victory over Bournemouth last weekend to secure the Blues' survival on the final day, as he said: "Whatever it took, it was worth it… Staying in the Premier League should be normal for a club this size. I want to thank you all because it's been a very difficult season for us. Despite that, we all stuck together and you kept pushing us. If, at the end we made it, it's because of your massive support throughout the season at home, but also away. So therefore, Toffees Army, thank you."

Football Insider have revealed that Manchester United are also keen suitors in the hunt for Onana; nevertheless, Everton will try to pull out the stops to make sure the 21-year-old stays put on Merseyside.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Jones thinks that Onana may stick around at Everton due to his affection towards the Premier League outfit.

Jones said: "I don't think that was his last dance for Everton, to be honest. I think that whenever you see Onana and his rapport with the fans, it seems like he loves the place. I think he was just desperate to stay up."

How did Amadou Onana get on for Everton in 2022/23?

Interestingly, it was claimed that Onana would be 99% certain to leave Everton this summer, regardless of avoiding relegation or not, but now it appears as if he could now stay in what would be a big U-turn.

Joining last summer from Lille in a deal worth £33 million, Onana has gone on to become a fan favourite at Goodison Park due to his industrious style on the field.

In 2022/23, the Dakar-born midfielder made 35 appearances in all competitions for the Toffees, registering one goal and two assists, as per Transfermarkt.

Everton'sAmadouOnanareacts

Winning back possession is one of Onana's strong points in the engine room, which is reflected in the fact he successfully came out on top in 2.2 challenges per match this term in the Premier League, according to WhoScored.

FBRef also illustrate that Onana has excelled compared to his positional peers across Europe's top five divisions in aerial duels won, as he has managed to win around 2.17 per 90 minutes across the last 365 days, putting him in the sixth percentile for this metric.

Liverpool Echo football writer Connor O'Neill labelled the Belgian enforcer as 'outstanding' earlier this season and it it easy to see why Everton will want to keep his presence around heading into 2023/24.

Kingsmead says it will be ready for rest of season

Kingsmead has provided an assurance that the outfield issue which caused the Test between South Africa and New Zealand to be abandoned will not affect any other matches this season

A soggy outfield at Kingsmead forced 11 out of 15 sessions to be abandoned in the first South Africa-New Zealand Test•AFP

Kingsmead has provided an assurance that the outfield issue which caused the first Test between South Africa and New Zealand to be abandoned earlier this week will not affect any other matches this season. Durban do not host a match for another five and a half weeks, when South Africa play Australia in an ODI on October 5, and acting CEO Rajesh Behari insists they will be ready.”We are already hard at work taking measures to ensure that the condition of the outfield does not impact on both international and domestic fixtures in the future,” Behari said in a statement.Already, ground staff at Kingsmead have filled the exposed patches with top soil and have fertilised the field to prompt the grass to grow as they wait for the ICC’s verdict after the outfield was rated poor by ICC match referee Andy Pycroft. CSA had 14 days from the issue of the report card to respond to it. The ground will then either receive a warning or a fine up to US$15,000.In mitigation of the state of Kingsmead’s outfield, which was deemed too soft for play on three days of the Test match, was that Durban experienced unseasonal rainfall of more than 400 millimetres in July and 65mm on the second night of the match. The heavy downpours meant the outfield was not allowed to settle after it was decompacted and relaid mid-June, following what CSA said were complaints by the South African and New Zealand players after limited-overs matches were played there last winter. It has since been reported by the that the New Zealand players did not have an issue with Kingsmead, but only said they found the Centurion outfield too hard. Both SuperSport Park and Kingsmead had work done to their outfields in preparation for this series but SuperSport Park’s revamp took place in April and only involved overseeding with winter grass, not digging. Kinsgmead’s happened more than two weeks after Comrades’ Marathon, which finished there on May 29, and saw 40 tonnes of sand removed and a new covering laid over it. It has since been claimed the digging at Kingsmead was also done too deeply. CSA oversaw both processes. In this statement, Behari said the combination of all the factors contributed to the abandoned Test. Like CSA he acknowledged that his ground staff had done “everything in their power to deal with the problems with the softened outfield, but that their role was limited in scope by the match officials in charge of the Test once the wet outfield complications developed”.Umpires Ian Gould and Richard Illingworth asked the ground staff not to use any artificial means of drying the surface, fearing the super sopper would worsen the soggy outfield, and left it to natural sunshine and wind to dry and harden the ground. There was not enough of either for play to be possible but those watching from a distance, who saw clear blue skies on television and a tacky outfield below, were left to questions whether Kingsmead is up to international standard.Behari is determined to reassure those critics with pristine conditions for the rest of the summer, in which Kingsmead will host two ODIs, three franchise first-class games, four franchise one-day cup matches and five franchise T20 matches. There are no more Test matches scheduled for Kingsmead this summer but it may come into contention for next season’s Boxing Day match.”We benchmark this stadium by the very best in the world and are determined to ensure that each and every match and Test matches in particular are memorable at this venue,” Behari said. “The only ground to have hosted more Test matches in South Africa is Newlands and our rich Test cricket heritage here at is something that we guard unwaveringly. Summer rains are a reality in Durban and we want to make sure that this ground, which has a good reputation for drainage and dealing with rain delays, will be in top condition for the upcoming domestic fixtures as well as the two internationals against Australia and Sri Lanka.”

NUFC Could Sign Bruno’s Perfect Partner In Generational £60m Gem

Newcastle United will have to make RB Leipzig playmaker Dominik Szoboszlai one of their more lucrative signings in history if they are to procure his signature this summer.

That's according to Chronicle Live, who claim that Toon technical director Dan Ashworth has reservations over the Hungarian captain's €70m (£60m) release clause.

Despite this, Szoboszlai is a prime target for Eddie Howe's side after captivating supporters in the German Bundesliga with his superlative performances, blending his goalscoring prowess with creative ingenuity to wreak havoc on German defences.

Previous claims from Sky Sports stated that the Magpies have sent scouts to observe the 22-year-old in action on multiple occasions over recent weeks, and with Premier League rivals such as Arsenal and Liverpool also mulling over issuing a swoop for the gem, Newcastle must swiftly decide whether they are prepared to pay such a large sum, though it would likely be money well spent for one of Europe's most prodigious midfielders in the business.

Should Newcastle sign Dominik Szoboszlai?

Described as a "generational talent" by journalist Marcel Moeller, Szoboszlai is a prolific playmaker and has played a definitive role in Leipzig's third-place finish and DFB Pokal triumph this season, scoring ten goals and assisting a further 13 from 46 matches across all competitions.

The 30-cap international ranks among the top 15% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for rate of assists, the top 9% for shot-creating actions, the top 5% for passes attempted and the top 13% for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref.

Stellar stuff. But perhaps more tantalising is the player's defensive attitude, ranking among the top 11% for blocks and the top 13% for clearances per 90, which could not only enhance his own prospects but those of the aces around him.

Take £40m powerhouse Bruno Guimaraes, for example; the 25-year-old Brazilian has been sensational since arriving on English shores from Lyon in January 2022, scoring ten goals and supplying six assists from 57 outings and being hailed as "world-class" by teammate Dan Burn

A truly spectacular and all-embracing dynamo, the £120k-per-week South American ranks among the top 20% of midfielders for rate of assists, the top 13% for shot-creating actions, and the top 13% for progressive passes and successful take-ons per 90.

Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

He sits deeper than Szoboszlai, however, and boasts defensive acumen of his own in winning 57% of his duels and making an average of 2.4 tackles and 1.1 interceptions in the Premier League this term, as per Sofascore.

By merging this dynamism across different facets of the Toon centre, there will be an increase in the flow of creativity, control and resilience, only enhancing the thriving squad.

Newcastle have been extraordinary in climbing from 11th place to fourth in the Premier League, and now offer the enticing prospect to Szoboszlai of slotting in as the playmaking centrepiece to Howe's system as the club now readies itself for sustained challenges for European football and silverware season upon season.

The Tyneside outfit's seasonal success has been steeped in diligence and cohesion, and Guimaraes is an embodiment of this. Szoboszlai, while primarily a direct threat, has evidenced through his play that he can work tirelessly across multiple facets of the pitch and as such, could be a devastating tool for Howe to wield, slotting into an industrious midfield with aplomb.
