Behardien to lead in T20 as SA ring changes

Firdose Moonda09-Jan-20170:40

Quick Facts – Farhaan Behardien

Farhaan Behardien will captain a new-look South African T20 outfit in their series against Sri Lanka later this month, which includes six new caps. The 13-man squad for the first two matches has only four members – Behardien, David Miller, Imran Tahir, Aaron Phangiso – who were part of South Africa’s last T20 matches at the World T20 in March 2016.Kyle Abbott, Rilee Rossouw and David Wiese were not considered because both have recently signed Kolpak deals to play in county cricket, thereby ending their international careers. The radical changes to the South Africa squad – including resting regular skipper Faf du Plessis and several senior players such as Hashim Amla, JP Duminy, Quinton de Kock and Kagiso Rabada – come as a result of a packed fixture list which has seen scant breaks since last November. South Africa had three weeks between their Tests in Australia to the home series against Sri Lanka and will only have four days between the end of that and their trip to New Zealand. They have identified the shortest format, which does not have a major tournament coming up until at least 2018, as the area they can afford to experiment in.All change for SA T20

IN: Theunis de Bruyn, Reeza Hendricks, Heino Kuhn, Mangaliso Mosehle, Lungi Ngidi, Dane Paterson, Andile Phehlukwayo, Jon-Jon Smuts, Wayne Parnell
OUT: Faf du Plessis, Kyle Abbott, Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Chris Morris, Kagiso Rabada, Rilee Rossouw, Dale Steyn, David Wiese

“We have decided to rest some of our key senior players for this series,” Linda Zondi, convener of selector said. “This is the last chance we have to do this as the ODI series that follows is an important part of our build-up to the Champions Trophy tournament in England in the middle of the year.”Those senior players who are involved in the Indian Premier League will be playing non-stop from now until the end of August with the tours coming up to New Zealand and England in addition to the ICC event.”There are two veterans who may return for the final fixture, though. AB de Villiers and Morne Morkel, neither of whom have played since the CPL in June because of elbow and back injuries respectively, are both due to play a List A game for Northerns on January 22, three days before the final T20 in Cape Town. Should they come through that match unscathed, they will be considered for the last match and South Africa’s tour to New Zealand. Some of the new inclusions will also be eyeing that trip. Although South Africa play just one T20 in Auckland, they will know there are places up for grabs in the ODI squad, especially with the new ball. Andile Phehlukwayo, who was South Africa’s highest wicket-taker in the recent ODI series against Australia and is likely to make his T20 debut against Sri Lanka, could be in contention for that role.Dane Paterson, the Cobras quick, will also fancy his chances. Paterson took just six wickets from nine matches at 39.00 in this season’s T20 competition but was in the top ten in the 2014-15 and 2015-16 editions. Titans bowler Lungi Ngidi, 20, who played a pivotal role in their victory in the domestic T20 final with 2 for 27 in four overs, is the other new face in the bowling department.Among the batsmen, some established players have been rewarded for seasons of consistency. Jon-Jon Smuts from the Warriors, who topped the T20 competition run charts with 371 runs at 41.22, is among them. Heino Kuhn was seventh on the list and has the chance to add to his five T20 caps while Reeza Hendricks, who has played the same number of T20 internationals but did not perform particularly well for the Lions, was also included. Theunis de Bruyn, who is the reserve batsmen in the Test squad and only played half this season’s T20 matches but scored 195 runs at 48.75, has also been included. In the absence of de Kock and de Villiers, Mangaliso Mosehle is set to take the wicketkeeping gloves. Mosehle is also a handy middle-order batsman and finished eighth on the run list in the T20 tournament.Among those overlooked were Rassie van der Dussen, who was fourth on the batting charts, Andrew Birch, who finished as the second highest wicket-taker, and Sisanda Magala, who was third. Chris Morris could not be considered because he has yet to make a comeback from a knee injury that has sidelined him for the last three months. Morris was due to play for the Titans in a first-class match last week but the fixture was rained out.South Africa T20 squad: Farhaan Behardien (capt), Theunis de Bruyn, Reeza Hendricks, Imran Tahir, Heino Kuhn, David Miller, Mangaliso Mosehle, Lungi Ngidi, Wayne Parnell, Dane Paterson, Aaron Phangiso, Andile Phehlukwayo, Jon-Jon Smuts

West Ham United Eyeing Swoop For "Special" £22.5k-p/w Ace

West Ham United are plotting a swoop to bring Norwich City defender Max Aarons to the Premier League, according to reports.

Is Max Aarons leaving Norwich?

The Canaries right-back’s contract isn’t set to expire until the end of next season, but after personally confirming that he will be departing during the ongoing window, clubs will have been alerted to his availability ahead of the new term.

During his 44 Championship starts last season, Carrow Road’s academy graduate established himself as David Wagner’s both third defensive and offensive best-performing player, so he may not be short of potential suitors, and it’s not the first time that he’s been linked with a move to the London Stadium.

Back in 2021, The Independent’s Nick Mashiter first credited David Moyes with an interest in the 23-year-old, and whilst a deal at the time obviously failed to materialise, it sounds like the boss is preparing to take a second bite of the cherry when it comes to securing his target.

Are West Ham signing Aarons?

According to talkSPORT, West Ham are “set to make a move” for Aarons this summer having been made aware that he is leaving his boyhood club.

The Irons’ interest from two years ago is backed up by the report and it’s believed that Norwich’s defender also “attracted interest” from Barcelona back in the day, and should he put pen to paper, he would “boost” the boss’ options at right-back alongside Vladimir Coufal and Ben Johnson.

Norwich City defender Max Aarons.

Could Aarons be a good addition for Moyes?

West Ham are likely to have a healthy budget to recruit the players that they want should Declan Rice’s move to Arsenal go through and Aarons has clearly been a long-term target for Moyes which is understandable to see why considering the positive impact he has at both ends of the pitch.

Norwich’s “special” right-back, as lauded by their former manager Daniel Farke, made a total of 84 tackles last season which was more than any other member of his squad, via FBRef, alongside averaging 1.4 clearances per second-tier game, but he was also a threat going forward.

Sponsored by Adidas, the £22.5k-per-week earner ranked in the 99th percentile for progressive carries so loves to take on his marker and when having made it to the opposition’s box, whipped 102 crosses into the area which was the second-highest number in the east of England, so he would be a fantastic acquisition should the boss successfully be able to convince him to join.

Rangers Receive Big Transfer Update Involving £8k-p/w Striker

Rangers have had an offer for Feyenoord striker Danilo swiftly turned down by the Dutch club, however Michael Beale remains keen, according to a report from The Daily Record.

What's the latest Rangers transfer news?

The Gers are in the latter stages of their negotiations for Brighton & Hove Albion's Abdallah Sima, with talks over a loan deal progressing well, although Alan Hutton believes Beale would much rather sign him on a permanent basis.

The former Rangers man does not expect the manager to bring too many players in on loan, and the manager has identified a number of other targets in attacking areas, who could be brought to Ibrox on a permanent basis.

Cremonese striker Cyriel Dessers is still being monitored by the Light Blues, having seen their previous approaches turned down earlier in the window, and Danilo also remains a potential option.

However, The Daily Record report the Gers have had a low-ball offer for the Feyenoord striker immediately turned down, with the bid falling way short of the Dutch side's asking price.

The Eredivisie champions expect to receive more than £5m for the striker, with the two clubs currently "miles apart", however there are indications that Rangers could return to the negotiating table.

Despite the knock back, the 24-year-old remains high on Beale's list of potential attacking targets, but Dessers remains the priority for the time being.

Which striker are Rangers signing?

Dessers is Rangers' top target at present, and it is clear to see why, given the Nigerian's goal-scoring record over the past few years, most notably scoring ten goals for Feyenoord en-route to the Europa Conference League final in 2022.

However, Danilo has also impressed for the Dutch side, having been hailed as their "best finisher" by former manager Erik ten Hag, and he netted ten league goals last season, the second-highest amount in the squad.

Danilo for Feyenoord

The Sao Paolo-born forward's qualities do not stop there, averaging 0.2 assists per 90 in the past year, placing him in the 87th percentile, when compared to his positional peers.

Having only recently turned 24, the £8k-per-week attacker is four years younger than Dessers, and he is already recording similar attacking numbers, with the latter netting nine goals during his last season in the Eredivisie.

At the moment, Rangers appear to be some way off Feyenoord's asking price, but if they are able to reach an agreement in the future, Danilo could be a solid addition to Beale's squad.

Patterson-White delivers tie with last-ball wicket

The left-arm spinner dismissed Ishan Porel off the last ball of the match to ensure that the fifth ODI between England Under-19s and India Under-19s ended in a thrilling tie

A see-saw contest, in which ball dominated bat, came down to the final ball. India Under-19s required one run with one wicket in hand. With the field in, left-arm spinner Liam Patterson-White tossed the last ball up and No. 10 Ishan Porel chipped a catch to short cover, resulting in a thrilling tie at the Wankhede Stadium to end the five-match series. With six required off the last over, No. 11 Heramb Parab played out two dot balls, then scythed a boundary in front of point. A dot ball and a single to deep midwicket off the next two deliveries meant India couldn’t lose.In a game of fine margins, the difference may have been the one run that Porel didn’t complete when turning for a second leg-bye in the penultimate over. Henry Brookes produced figures of 3 for 30 in a disciplined spell of fast bowling.Defending 226, England’s seamers learnt from their mistakes in the previous game. On a green surface, they resisted bowling short, choosing a good length or a fuller length instead. With some lateral movement and bounce on offer, they extracted enough to trouble India’s top order, repeatedly beating batsmen on the outside edge.Priyam Garg popped a catch to short midwicket in the first over, closing his bat face too early. Abhishek Sharma was caught at slip, driving loosely away from his body. In the 12th over, Manjot Kalra slapped a drive to cover, off Arthur Godsal, where Tom Banton took a sharp reverse-cupped catch. In his next over, Godsal had Mayank Rawat caught down the leg side, gloving a pull. India were reduced to 54 for 4 at this stage.S Radhakrishnan, one of nine inclusions for India, was loose outside the off stump early. He gradually gained fluency as his innings progressed, though. He struck a few well-timed drives and was strong on the pull. When on 65, Radhakrishnan chipped a catch to deep midwicket off Delray Rawlins. India slumped to 137 for 7, and it seemed like the game was out of reach. “I felt like the game had gone,” India U-19 coach Rahul Dravid said after the match.Ayush Jamwal and Yash Thakur then combined to add 65 for the eighth wicket to accentuate England’s frustration, taking India close enough to the target. After Jamwal was caught at fine leg, India still needed 25 off 20 balls. Delray Rawlins, Arthur Godsal and Jack Blatherwick picked up two wickets each. After being inserted, England’s top order failed to capitalise on starts, much like the rest of the series. Harry Brook (14), Tom Banton (16) and Rawlins (17) were all dismissed by India’s seamers as England crawled to 64 for 3 in the 17th over.Again, the rebuilding work was left to George Bartlett and Ollie Pope. While Pope was more circumspect against a decent attack, Bartlett repeatedly found the boundary off the seamers. All five wickets taken by India’s spinners were a result of England’s batsmen playing for turn that wasn’t there. Bartlett hit two sixes during his 47 before he missed a straight one from left-arm spinner Shiva Singh. Stand-in captain Max Holden was caught at slip, playing inside the line of a delivery from Jamwal. Will Jacks, who struck 28 off 34 balls with two fours and a huge six over midwicket, missed a non-turning offbreak from Mayank Rawat, and was stumped. Pope was bowled attempting to cut a slider and Liam Patterson-White was pinned in front after missing a sweep. At that stage, England had been reduced to 187 for 8 after 43 overs. However, some handy lower-order cameos propped up England towards the end. Godsal, who hit an unbeaten 19, should have been run-out at the striker’s end, attempting to complete a second run but a fielder had blocked the umpire’s view trying to back up the throw.

Derbyshire have announced a sixth successive year of profit, with a surplus of £2653 in 2016. The financial results included a record turnover for the third year in a row, on the back of increased commercial activity.A new media centre at Derbyshire’s ground will be unveiled as part of hosting televised matches at the Women’s World Cup and although chairman Chris Grant set to stand down ahead of running for election to the ECB, the club has continued to go in the right direction, despite a difficult couple of seasons on the field.”I’m extremely proud to have overseen six successive years of surplus and grown turnover to record levels since being elected in 2011,” Grant said. “This has been a tremendous achievement given the huge challenge that keeping a first-class county afloat entails and is an enviable track record.”The increased revenue has allowed us to continue our commitment to increasing the cricket budget, while also investing in improving the ground.”It is also no exaggeration to say that the 3aaa County Ground is unrecognisable from what it used to be as a result of a £4m ground development programme, which will see the club host the opening fixture of this year’s ICC Women’s World Cup and Sir Elton John in concert.”Derbyshire finished bottom of Division Two in 2016, while failing to progress in either the NatWest Blast or Royal London Cup. Kim Barnett was subsequently appointed as director of cricket, with New Zealand’s John Wright coming in as a specialist T20 coach, among a host of comings and goings on the playing staff.

Everton v Fulham: predictions, preview & more

Everton play host to Marco Silva's Fulham in the opening weekend of the new Premier League season.

The Toffees will be hoping for a slightly more relaxing season in the coming campaign after surviving relegation on the final day last season and the penultimate game the season before that.

The Cottagers, on the other hand, will be hoping for more of the same, as before Aleksandar Mitrovic's eight-game ban for shoving a lineman at Old Trafford, the team was on battling it out for the European places.

Here is Football FanCast's official preview for the game…

When is the match, and is it on TV in the UK?

The match is set to be played on Saturday, August 12th at 3pm BST, alongside three other fixtures in the league.

Unfortunately, the match will not be televised in the UK due to the 3pm blackout rule first put into place in 1987.

The last meeting between the sides saw Fulham claim their first victory in two months, whilst the defeat left the men in blue hanging perilously above the drop zone thanks to their goal difference.

Every Openind Day Premier League Fixture in full

Who is Everton's key player?

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

You might have been hard-pressed for much of last year to pick out a 'star' player in the Everton squad due to their consistently poor performances.

However, the man who was probably most responsible for the team's top-flight survival last year was England international Jordan Pickford.

The keeper won the club's Player of the Season award for the second year running for his excellent work between the sticks, and you can bet that should Sean Dyche keep the team up again, he'll have the former Sunderland man to thank.

Who is Fulham's key player?

It's quite the opposite situation for the West London team. Their excellent year back in the Premier League makes it difficult to pick out a key player for all the right reasons.

It could be Bernd Leno for his brilliant shot-stopping last year or Joao Palhinha for his immense tackling in the middle of the pitch, but it's probably the man up top, Mitrovic.

The Serbian striker was potentially on course to break 20 goals before his suspension against Manchester United, eventually finishing on a respectable 14.

Should he avoid any disciplinary problems, he could well beat that tally next year and open his account away at Goodison Park.

How will Everton line up?

Everton manager Sean Dyche.

It could be a summer of upheaval at Goodison Park, with a few players looking like they might be on the way out, notably Neil Maupay and Yerry Mina and loanees Conor Coady and Ruben Vinagre.

There have also been murmurings of a move to Manchester United for Pickford, as Erik ten Hag is said to be a fan, but so far, no official bids have been made.

There have been no significant incomings at this point, but the club are linked to Coventry City's Viktor Gyokeres, per O Jogo (via Goodison News) who would certainly bolster their faltering attack.

At this stage, the line up could be:

Jordan Pickford; Vitalii Mykolenko, Ben Godfrey, James Tarkowski, Nathan Patterson; Amadou Onana, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Alex Iwobi, Dwight McNeil, Demarai Gray, Dominic Calvert-Lewin

How will Fulham line up?

Fulham boss Marco Silva.

Fulham could be the victims of their own success in the summer, with their star midfielder, Palhinha, being linked to a host of clubs, notably West Ham United, who will be looking to replace Declan Rice.

However, the West London club are interested in bringing in some reinforcements of their own.

According to journalist Rudy Galetti, the Cottagers are ready to "open talks with Fiorentina" for defender Igor Julio, and the links to United's Fred haven't gone away either.

The club will also likely want to make the loan of Manor Solomon a permanent deal after he has impressed during the campaign.

That said, here is what Fulham's line up could look like:

Bernd Leno; Kenny Tete, Issa Diop, Igor Julio, Antonee Robinson; Harrison Reed, Fred. Andreas Pereira; Willian, Harry Wilson, Aleksandr Mitrovic

What were the last five Premier League meetings between Everton and Fulham?

Fulham forward Willian.

Everton 1 – 3 Fulham Fulham 0 – 0 Everton Everton 0 – 2 Fulham Fulham 2 – 3 Everton Fulham 2 – 0 Everton

Looking at their last five Premier League meeting paints a picture of dominance from the Cottagers.

Only once in the previous five meetings have Everton been able to claim all three points against Fulham, and that was away from home, which is not a promising sign going into the game at Goodison Park.

Will Dyche be able to work his magic and turn things around?

Who is going to win?

Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic reacts.

Despite the Toffees ending their season on an extreme high with their relegation-beating win at home to AFC Bournemouth and Fulham losing their final game away to United, the Cottagers should have the quality to claim all three points.

Everton will likely be better next season, but based on their performances over the last two years and the seriously impressive performances Silva has been able to get out of his players, you'd have to back the men in white.

Things look even worse for the blue half of Merseyside when you remember that Mitrovic will be back and raring to go come August 12th.
