"Important" Offer Could Land £70m Man for Chelsea

Chelsea's hopes of signing Dusan Vlahovic have been handed a boost as the player is no longer considered "untouchable" by Juventus, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Will Chelsea sign Vlahovic?

Despite being just 23-years-old, Vlahovic has been around for some time.

After becoming Partizan Belgrade's youngest ever player and goalscorer at just 16, Fiorentina were the ones who managed to snap up his signature for a now miniscule fee of £2.7m in 2018.

Following an impressive period with the Violets, scoring 49 goals in 108 games, Juventus were first on the scene to snatch him from Florence, parting ways with £66.6m in the process.

His time in Turin has been less fruitful, however, with just 23 goals in a year-and-a-half and he has been subject to significant criticism from some in Italy, albeit his arrival at Juventus has naturally coincided with one of the clubs more difficult spells on and off the pitch.

Vlahovic is still a brilliant number nine, something he has exhibited in patches at Juventus and in full with Serbia on international duty. There is still the feeling that the 6ft 2 striker of a forward will come good sooner rather than later.

That renaissance could be in the Premier League though, with Juventus softening their stance on the forward's availability amid interest from Chelsea, according to Romano.

The Blues are lacking a clinical number nine and despite having brought in Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson, there is a sense that Mauricio Pochettino would still like a more complete centre-forward to go alongside them.

There have been suggestions that £70m may be enough to land Vlahovic, with Chelsea not against spending large sums on players with huge potential.

Is Vlahovic up for sale?

According to Romano, an "important bid" could be enough to lure Vlahovic from the Allianz with Chelsea sniffing around the Serbian international.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano claimed: "He is an important player for Juventus and he remains an important player for Juventus, but from what I'm told also because of an internal decision of Juve, at the moment Vlahovic is not untouchable.

"He is not considered a player on the market, so Juventus are not desperate to sell Dusan Vlahovic, but if they receive an important, and I want to say again, really important bid for Dusan Vlahovic they are prepared to open negotiations."

He continued: "We had rumours about Chelsea in the recent hours. He's always been appreciated by people in the board at Chelsea but at the moment from what I'm hearing there is no bid from Chelsea, no negotiation with Juventus.

"So, at the moment nothing concrete to say about Chelsea and Dusan Vlahovic. Let's see what happens in the next weeks and months but Chelsea, I repeat, appreciated the player since long time, but not actively working on the deal as of now."

Romano adds that Paris Saint-Germain also hold an interest in the player as they look for a central striker in the window. Just like they did with Manuel Ugarte, the French champions could jump ahead of Chelsea if they act quickly.

Chelsea's main issue was scoring goals last season, only managing 38 in the 38 in the Premier League – significantly lower than relegated Leeds United and Leicester City.

Pochettino, especially given his preference for attacking football, will be desperate to fix the problem in the transfer market and Vlahovic could be a prime target to end Chelsea's goalscoring woes.

Moises Henriques is heading back to Surrey this summer two years after his first spell at the county ended in disturbing fashion after only three appearances because of a serious jaw injury.Henriques suffered with a broken jaw in three places, and required three bouts of surgery after a jarring collision in the field with his Surrey team-mate Rory Burns in a NatWest T20 Blast game against Sussex at Arundel. But Henriques, who has underlined his full recovery by extending his Australia career in all three formats, has said he has “unfinished business” with the county. The allrounder will once again play in the domestic T20 competition, providing cover while former Sri Lanka batsman Kumar Sangakkara competes in the Caribbean Premier League. He told Surrey’s official website: “I’m really happy to be returning to Surrey, a great club where I really enjoyed myself in 2015.”As well as feeling like I’ve got a bit of unfinished business, the NatWest T20 Blast is well established as one of the top T20 competitions in the world and I’m really looking forward to playing against some of the world’s best cricketers in front of sold out London crowds at the Kia Oval.”Henriques joins his fellow Australian Aaron Finch, who will be available for the entirety of the competition, while Surrey further swelled their batting ranks earlier this month by re-signing Kevin Pietersen.

Mumbai clinch third IPL title in last-ball finish

Mumbai Indians clinched their third IPL title in a pulsating last-ball finish, defending 129 to beat Rising Pune Supergiant by one run

The Report by Karthik Krishnaswamy21-May-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details2:49

Agarkar: Pune’s over-cautious approach cost them the IPL

This was, barring a WWE-style rebirth, Rising Pune Supergiant’s last ever IPL game. They made sure it went the distance, all the way to the last ball, despite keeping Mumbai Indians down to the lowest first-innings total in an IPL final.Somehow, Pune managed to drag a chase of 130 to the last ball. The first ever IPL final had come down to the last ball too. Then, nine years ago, Sohail Tanvir pulled L Balaji for a single to win it for Rajasthan Royals. Now, Mitchell Johnson bowled to Daniel Christian with Pune needing four to win. Bowling from around the wicket, Johnson went full and straight. Christian whipped it away to the left of deep square leg. J Suchith, the substitute fielder, fumbled at the boundary, allowing a second run. That wouldn’t do for Pune. They needed four to win, and three to tie.The batsmen chased a desperate third with Suchith’s throw almost already in Parthiv Patel’s gloves. Once Parthiv collected it safely, only one result was possible. Mumbai Indians, playing their fourth final, wrapped up their third title, winning by one run.Krunal Pandya was Mumbai’s hero with the bat, his 38-ball 47 dragging them from 79 for 7 to an eventual 129 for 8, a total that would enable their bowlers to scrap all the way. Then, helped along by Pune’s ODI-style top-order approach, those scrapping bowlers managed to make the required rate creep steadily upwards – with five overs to go, Pune were only two down but needed 47 from 30.Given Mumbai’s death bowling, this was definitely not over. Jasprit Bumrah took out MS Dhoni in the 17th over. Then Lasith Malinga and Bumrah again ensured Pune would only get two boundaries across the 18th and 19th. That left Steven Smith, batting on 51, and Manoj Tiwary 11 to get from the last over.Despite taking a boundary off his first ball, they couldn’t quite do it against Johnson.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Mumbai bat, Mumbai falterSix of the nine previous IPL finals had been won by the team batting first. Perhaps that and how it was difficult to chase in Hyderabad was why Rohit Sharma went against his team’s record this season of eight wins in 11 games while chasing. That too when they only had a 3-2 record while batting first.Perhaps it had something to do with Mumbai’s record against Pune: they had met three times this season, and Pune had won all three times, twice while batting first. It seemed, right through Mumbai’s innings, that they had some mental scars from all those defeats to Pune. A first-ball leave from Lendl Simmons set the tone for a cautious start on a slower-than-usual Hyderabad surface, with only seven coming off the first two overs, against Jaydev Unadkat’s back-of-a-length cutters and Washington Sundar’s flat, stump-to-stump offspin. Then Unadkat dismissed both openers in the third over – a short ball cramping Parthiv Patel’s attempt to pull, a slower ball clipping Simmons’ leading edge and popping back for a diving return catch.Mumbai never really recovered from there, despite Rohit Sharma smacking Lockie Ferguson for four fours in the sixth over. Adam Zampa removed Rohit and Kieron Pollard in the 11th over, and Mumbai were 65 for 5.Krunal gives Mumbai a chanceChristian trapped Hardik Pandya lbw in the 14th, playing across the line, and Karn Sharma was run out in the next over, in most comical manner. Dropped by Christian diving to his left at slip, he ran out of his crease in a panic anyway. It seemed to sum up Mumbai’s state of mind.Krunal, though, seemed to be achieving some clarity of thought. For now, he was simply thinking of extending the innings as far as he could. It took until the 19th over for him to hit his first six, straight back over Unadkat’s head. Then he swiped and slogged Christian for a four and a six in the last over, off which Pune scored 14. Still, their total was 14 short of the previous-lowest first-innings total in an IPL final. That had come in 2009, when Deccan Chargers defended 143.Mitchell Johnson dismissed Steven Smith in the last over to turn the match again•BCCI

Rahane, Smith keep Mumbai in the gameNo team had defended a total of 129 or below since the 2013 season. Mumbai, though, had the bowling to do it. Pune, meanwhile, adopted a keep-wickets-in-hand approach. With Rahul Tripathi lbw in the third over to Bumrah, Smith joined Ajinkya Rahane at the crease. Rahane could have fallen for 14, foxed by a Malinga slower ball, but Krunal failed to hold on to a fairly straightforward chance at short cover.By the time he holed out to long-on in the 12th over, he had made 44 of 38, batting as he would in the longer forms of the game. Smith, playing in the same manner, was batting on 18 off 25 at that point. Given the slowness of the surface and the difficulty new batsmen would face in getting going straightaway, this seemed a questionable approach. As it happened, Dhoni struggled initially, scoring only four off his first nine balls. With Karn Sharma and Krunal getting the ball to grip, and Malinga varying his pace, Pune batted out three boundary-free overs. With 30 balls remaining, they now needed 47.End-overs experts squeeze out PuneA half-controlled square-cut from Dhoni sped between backward point and short third man, and two balls later Smith reverse-swiped Krunal for six. Fourteen came off that over, and Rising Pune seemed to be back on track.Bumrah and Malinga, though, still had three overs to bowl. Bumrah got Dhoni caught behind, denying him width for the cut, and closed out that over, the 17th, with two lbw appeals against Manoj Tiwary, the batsman unable to read his changes of pace and angle, coupled with a hint of reverse.Smith managed to flick Malinga for four in the 18th, in between a string of unhittable yorkers, and launched Bumrah over long-off in the 19th, off the one ball in the over that was pitched short of the blockhole. When Tiwary shuffled across and whipped the first ball of the 20th over to the vacant square-leg boundary – Johnson had just lost an argument with Rohit to station a fielder there – the equation came down to 7 off 5.Surely, that would do it. Johnson, though, hadn’t had his say yet. Looking to hit him over extra-cover, Tiwary was undone by the slower ball, only managing to drag it round to long-on. Then Smith, having crossed over, timed an inside-out slice perfectly, but straight to sweeper cover. With three balls left, Pune needed seven, with two new batsmen at the crease. Washington Sundar brought Christian on strike off the fourth ball, failing to make contact with a wide-ish yorker but managing to scamper a bye. Then Christian, slogging at another full slower one, was dropped by Hardik running forward from deep midwicket – he sprinted a second, and Pune needed four from the last ball. The last ball of Rising Pune Supergiant’s two years in the IPL. It wouldn’t be the last ball they wanted.

The New Xhaka: Arsenal Star Was ‘Outrageous’ v MLS All Stars

Granit Xhaka went through hell and earth to earn the plaudits of Arsenal fans during his time in north London.

It was a remarkable stint at the Emirates for the Swiss who played under three managers having initially been brought in by Arsene Wenger.

He was the backbone of the side with the Frenchman as his tutor but enjoyed a less successful spell under Unai Emery. The infamous booing and tossing of the armband to the floor looked as though it meant he'd never play for the club again.

Yet, his character is tough, perhaps one of the sternest we've seen in this part of London. He fought back and after taking his leave earlier this month, will go down as a cult hero among supporters.

How many goals did Xhaka score for Arsenal?

Under Mikel Arteta, he became one of the most influential midfielders in the Premier League, this time for all the right reasons.

Granit Xhaka

Xhaka may well have still received three red cards while the Spaniard was in charge for 147 of his Arsenal outings, but 12 of his 23 strikes in Gunners colours also came during that time.

Indeed, his most prolific term was in 2022/23, finding the net on nine occasions while also supplying seven assists from his role as a number 8.

Although this position meant the Switzerland international could burst forward to join the attack with far more regularly than we had ever seen from him, the defensive side of his game wasn't neglected either.

He made the role his own and after departing for Bayer Leverkusen, Arteta has a difficult job on his hands. Who will replace Xhaka in his system? Declan Rice? Kai Havertz? Think again, it could well be a wild card pick.

Who will replace Xhaka at Arsenal?

When Havertz arrived through the door from Chelsea, Arteta immediately stated that he was pleased to bolster his midfield options. Indeed, as the season pans out, he may well operate in that number eight role.

As too may Rice, although his best qualities are perhaps best showcased in a holding role. That said, he has the carrying ability to play to a high level in Xhaka's role as a no.8.

In the last few seasons, the former West Ham captain's ability to carry things forward has improved significantly. In 2018/19, he ranked inside the worst 21% in the division among midfielders for progressive carries yet last term, the England international sat in the best 17% in the entire top-flight. Some progress.

To put that number into context, Havertz sat inside the best 39% for progressive carries, but among forward players in the Premier League throughout 2022/23.

Whether Arteta is able to extract the most out of the German in a deeper role remains to be seen. Should that not be the plan then he could turn to a man who ranked inside the top 13% of forwards in the English top division for progressive carries last campaign; Leandro Trossard.

The Belgian has been a phenomenal signing for the Gunners after arriving in January for a bargain £27m fee.

He posted ten assists in just 22 outings, perhaps outlining him as the perfect man for a role in the middle of the park.

Trossard has reportedly been training in the number 8 role and he has twice featured there in pre-season now. It wasn't until the 5-0 drubbing over the MLS All Stars, however, that Arteta's vision started to be realised.

How did Trossard perform against MLS All Stars?

Although it won't go down as an official goal, the 28-year-old fired home his second goal for the club in that rout on Thursday morning.

The effervescent Bukayo Saka cut inside nicely from the right as he does before laying the ball off to Trossard. In true Santi Cazorla fashion, he checked the ball onto his right foot before curling home a delicious effort from outside the box.

Leandro Trossard statistics vs MLS All Stars

Throughout the game, the former Brighton ace picked up nice pockets of space and showcased, albeit against poor opposition, that he could be the answer to Arsenal's midfield depth in the new season.

All in all, Arsenal's number 19 completed 82% of his passes, created one big chance, succeeded with 100% of his dribble attempts and won four duels in what was a complete 56-minute performance.

One prominent club writer even went as far as to declare the attacking midfielder had been "outrageous".

There is still plenty of work to do for Trossard to make that position his own but he clearly has the faith of his manager. That could well be key when the season kicks off against Nottingham Forest next month. Watch this space.

West Ham United Leading Race To Sign £50m "Warrior"

West Ham United are one of the two clubs in pole position to sign Chelsea’s central midfielder Conor Gallagher this summer, according to reliable journalist Nizaar Kinsella.

Is Conor Gallagher leaving Chelsea?

The Premier League midfielder is an academy graduate at Stamford Bridge having worked his way up through the various youth ranks to become a member of the first-team fold, but last season he fell significantly out of favour having made just 18 starts from 38 games in the top-flight, so he could want to look elsewhere to find more regular game time.

Back in August 2022, Simon Phillips, who is a reporter for the Blues, revealed when speaking to GiveMeSport that David Moyes’ side “made an enquiry” for the 23-year-old with Crystal Palace also holding an interest following his previous loan spell at Selhurst Park, though a deal at the time obviously failed to come to fruition.

Mauricio Pochettino has already sanctioned the sales of Mason Mount and Ruben Loftus-Cheek who were also both academy products in the capital, and there’s a chance that the England international could be about to follow in their footsteps by heading for the exit door.

Are West Ham signing Conor Gallagher?

Taking to Twitter, Kinsella revealed that West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur are both going head-to-head to secure Gallagher who at this stage appears likely to end up in either E20 or N17 ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. He wrote:

“Chelsea are ready to sell Conor Gallagher despite his preseason appearances. It's a direct battle between Tottenham and West Ham for his signature. He'll cost around £35m with two years left on his Chelsea deal.”

Expanding in his column for the Evening Standard, the reporter stated that the Irons and Spurs are “leading the fight” for their target who is being “offered” to new clubs after being labelled “surplus to requirements” in SW6.

Since this story emerged, Fabrizio Romano has broken the news that the Hammers have seen an opening £40m offer rejected by Chelsea and revealed that the midfielder’s price tag has now increased to £50m.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

West Ham are clearly serious about signing Gallagher to be revisiting a deal 12 months on, and it’s no surprise considering that he’s been dubbed a “warrior” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, so should he put pen to paper, he could be a fantastic acquisition for Moyes.

The Elite Management Agency client still managed to score three goals and provide one assist in the top-flight last season despite his limited minutes which saw him collect two man-of-the-match awards, not to mention that he also ranked in the 97th percentile for most attacking touches in the opposition’s penalty area.

Gallagher, who was named in Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad for the 2022 World Cup and scored twice at the London Stadium in 2021, additionally has the flexibility to operate in six various roles over the pitch, including everywhere across the centre of the park and even out wide on the right wing, so he would provide the boss with plenty of versatility should he be able to agree a move to the Irons.

Sarfraz sees shaky Pakistan into semi-finals

Pakistan huffed and puffed through a chase of 237 but they made it in the end thanks to the composure of their captain

The Report by Danyal Rasool12-Jun-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details1:35

Agarkar: Sarfraz’s calmness crucial in guiding his side

The Champions Trophy might have been damp and lifeless on the English shores this year, but it was on a Welsh detour that it finally roared to life. In the game which had the most riding on it all tournament, Pakistan and Sri Lanka provided a spectacle befitting the magnitude of the occasion, and Pakistan sneaked across the line with a thrilling three-wicket win. But that’s only half the story. The rest centered around how madly the momentum of this game swung as two obviously flawed teams battled tooth and nail.Pakistan fined for slow over rate

Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed has been fined 20% of his match fee, while his team-mates were fined 10% of their match fees, for maintaining a slow over-rate during the match against Sri Lanka.
Pakistan were found to be one over short of their target after time allowances were taken into consideration. A second minor over-rate offence in the tournament could result in a one-match suspension for Sarfraz.
Sarfraz pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction; a formal hearing was not required as a result. The charge was laid by on-field umpires Bruce Oxenford and Marais Erasmus, third umpire Chris Gaffaney and fourth umpire Ian Gould.

Qualification to the semis was the prize riding on this game that was a quarter-final in all but name, and it was clear both sides wanted it desperately. Sri Lanka started impressively but a brilliant spell midway from Mohammad Amir and Junaid Khan restricted them to 236. Pakistan made the chase look harder than it was but captain Sarfraz Ahmed and Amir were there at the end to see their side home. Though the prospect of facing England on Wednesday will be daunting, it will be the last thing on their minds right now. From the moment Pakistan’s seventh wicket fell – with 75 still to win – two antsy sides were hoping they could do just about enough to pip the other. Sri Lanka were the favourites at that point, but their fielding let them down badly. Thisara Perera dropped a sitter at mid-on in the 39th over. Substitute fielder Seekkuge Prasanna shelled another chance – albeit a more difficult one – in the 41st. And Sarfraz, the reprieved batsman, the last of the specialists, took the game away.Lasith Malinga, Sri Lanka’s great talisman, had created both chances and if this is to be his final ICC tournament, it was a cruel way to go. He watched, helplessly, as his team began to gift overthrows, and little by little, the belief as well to the Pakistan batsmen. By the time a dispirited Malinga was brought back for his final over, the fielding had disintegrated to amateurish level. Eventually, Sarfraz dabbed him over third man for the winning runs, and a shocking last half hour for the Sri Lankans met the end it deserved.Sarfraz Ahmed’s composure helped Pakistan overcome an untimely collapse•Getty Images

Before the nerves got hold of them, Pakistan were cruising. A dropped catch and a run-out opportunity in the first two overs aside, Fakhar Zaman and Azhar Ali set about their task masterfully.Fakhar, comfortable in his role as the designated aggressor up front, hit three boundaries in the third over against Malinga. He didn’t mind riding his luck at times, an outside edge burst through slips for four while a top edge flew for six, and when he was dismissed – caught at long leg – he had scored 50 off 36 and Pakistan were sitting pretty at 74 for 1 in 11.2 overs. But with this being Pakistan, there was the inevitable feeling they would take the Rolling English Road to victory. Two wickets fell quickly as Babar Azam clipped Nuwan Pradeep straight to short midwicket and Hafeez chipped one to mid-on next over. Opener Azhar Ali was done in by the extra bounce of Suranga Lakmal soon after, edging a sharp catch to first slip. Pakistan were at 110 for 4, and the game was anything but a foregone conclusion.Sri Lanka were quietly climbing into a position of ascendancy, but Pakistan almost appeared not to notice the early signs of danger. It certainly couldn’t be ignored when Shoaib Malik gloved a short ball from Malinga to the keeper. When Imad Wasim fell five balls later, Pakistan were 6 down with 100 runs still to win.Debutant Faheem Ashraf’s short-lived stay at the crease was fraught with danger as the bowlers peppered him with short deliveries, several of which caught his top edge but managed to evade the boundary riders. For all the risks he was taking on strike, he was run-out at the other end, a ricochet off the bowler’s hand finding the stumps before his bat hit the ground. There were no such errors from Pakistan with the ball though. In fact they were so good that Sri Lanka, despite dominating large parts of their innings, were bowled out well below the par score.A sensational four-over burst from Amir and Junaid ripped the heart out of the Sri Lankan middle order as they went from 161 for 3 to 167 for 7. It was superb fast bowling, evoking comparisons with some of the greats of Pakistan cricket and that it came soon after the innings’ second drinks break spoke either to some kind of strategy, or an especially rousing team talk from the captain Sarfraz. Either way, it was match-turning.Sri Lanka were setting up effectively for the final flourish, with Niroshan Dickwella and Angelo Mathews locked in a settled partnership, before Amir dismissed Mathews off the second ball of the 32nd over, the batsman dragging onto his stumps. Junaid followed up next over with a length delivery that seamed teasingly away from newcomer Dhananjaya de Silva and took his outside edge. Sarfraz then pulled off a superb reflex catch to get rid of Dickwella for 73 and Thisara was caught at slip next over. Sri Lanka’s position of strength was decimated in mere minutes. If it appeared that passage of play would be the solitary turning point of the match, Pakistan and Sri Lanka showed that when they take on each other, it is never quite that simple.

Everton Expected To Sign New Midfielder This Summer

It is very possible that Everton will look to sign a new midfielder in the summer transfer window, according to a key update from journalist Alan Myers.

Are Everton looking for new signings?

The Blues endured another disappointing season in the Premier League last time around, having gone into the campaign with an element of hope that a positive year could be enjoyed.

Instead, Everton had to wait until the final day to secure their safety, with their 1-0 victory over Bournemouth keeping them in the top flight and preventing what would have been a damaging relegation to the Championship.

It is now imperative that a repeat of the last two seasons doesn't happen, however, with Sean Dyche and his players needing to find a new level in 2023/24, ahead of a move to their new ground in the near future.

For that to happen, it is clear that new signings need to come in, bringing a freshness to proceedings, and most importantly, adding more quality and depth to Dyche's squad. It looks likely that Atalanta will beat them to the signing of primary attacking target El Bilal Toure, which is a blow, but other areas of the pitch also need to be focused on.

There have already been players brought in, though. Ashley Young was the first to join, signing on a free transfer after leaving Aston Villa, and he has since been followed by Arnaut Danjuma, who has made the move to Merseyside on loan from Villarreal.

Another new face, this time in the middle of the park, could also be on the cards.

isaac-babadi-sean-dyche-everton-transfer-premier-league

Will Everton sign a new midfielder?

When asked by a fan on Twitter whether Everton would bring in a new midfielder this summer, Sky Sports reporter Myers responded with a simple but promising two-word response regarding the situation:

"Very possibly."

While no specific player is mentioned in the report, it is encouraging to hear that a midfielder could arrive at Goodison soon, hopefully in time for the start of the Premier League season, with Everton entertaining Fulham in their opening game on August 12th.

Chelsea and England midfielder Conor Gallagher has been linked with a move to Merseyside and he could be an ideal option, although he isn't without suitors, with West Ham thought to be in the running to snap him up, having tabled a £40m offer for his services.

The 23-year-old is renowned for his energy levels and would provide a fresh impetus in the middle of the park, not to mention an eye for goal, having scored eight league goals on loan at Crystal Palace in 2021/22.

Whoever ends up coming in – you could argue he needs to be the right age and profile for Dyche, arriving as a key man from the off and providing strong competition for the likes of Amadou Onana, Idrissa Gueye and Alex Iwobi.

These next few weeks really could decide how Everton will cope and potentially even finish in the league in 2023/24, and if key additions don't come in across several different positions – centre-back, midfielder and centre-forward all stand out – there is the definite risk of yet another painful relegation battle, but it looks as if a new midfielder could be one to watch.
