Byrom untroubled in pink-ball debut

Zimbabwean Eddie Byrom looked comfortable as he made his first-class debut against the pink ball

Only 13 overs were played on a soggy second day of Hampshire and Somerset’s Division One Specsavers County Championship clash at the Ageas Bowl.In the 54 minutes of action, Gareth Berg managed to find Hampshire’s first wicket of the match. The South African fast bowler dupe Marcus Trescothick into a cut shot which proved too close to cut as he chopped onto his own stumps.Where Trescothick failed, his younger less experienced, opening partner Eddie Byrom appeared to flourish. The Zimbabwean, on his first class debut, looked comfortable at the crease as the new pink ball sprung off the pitch. But his 50-ball progress at the crease was paused by rain, with the 20-year-old reaching 13 not out before umpires Ian Blackwell and Martin Saggers eventually called off any hope of any further action at 6.30pm.It was scant reward – initially at least – for Byrom’s father who had grabbed the first plane he could from Zimbabwe to see his son’s first-class debut.”When I found out I was playing I immediately called my parents and told them,” Byrom said. “My dad really wanted to be here so flew over to support.”Since I was small it was a massive dream of mine to play first class cricket so it was amazing to make that dream come true. I moved over the England three years ago to finish my schooling at King’s College in Taunton and then my cricket flourished from there, being involved with Somerset and the second team in the last couple of years.”Steve Snell, the second team coach, has been great for me and being able to learn off the likes of Marcus Trescothick is amazing for me. It was young and old – there was about 20 years difference between us! “He is such a calming influence so when I was walking out with him was exactly what I needed on my debut.”

Villa Could Sign "Versatile" Ace In £15m Swoop

Aston Villa are reportedly still in pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, as Unai Emery eyes a reunion with his former player.

The Spaniard has already reconnected with Pau Torres, in whom he managed at Villarreal, with the four-time Europa League winner now reported to have set his sights back on the Argentine.

Could Aston Villa sign Giovani Lo Celso?

A report from Football Insider back in October first linked the midfielder with a move to Villa worth £15m, with news coming this month that the Villans remain interested.

As per Estadio Deportivo, from the viewpoint of Napoli, the Italian champions are set to face competition for the midfielder, with the Midlands club ‘very interested’.

The 27-year-old has played under Emery in two different spells, with both Paris Saint-Germain and most recently, Villarreal.

How good is Giovani Lo Celso?

Despite having a stop-start career in England so far, the Argentine has still managed to impress in the Premier League, seeing him dubbed an “amazing player” by former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho.

Although he made the switch to north London back in 2019, initially on a year-long-loan, the Argentine has registered just 55 appearances in the Premier League, endeavouring on multiple loan spells away from England.

Spending last season on loan at Villarreal, the midfielder had the chance to reconnect with Emery, who was thrilled to be joined in Spain by his former player, praising him as “versatile”.

Now, the Spaniard could repeat old tricks in recruiting the 27-year-old in the Midlands, with the Spurs creator showing signs that he could be the perfect fit in Emery’s set-up.

Villa striker Ollie Watkins added 15 goals to his Premier League tally last season, in a strong individual campaign that led his side to a European finish.

In adding Lo Celso to the squad, Emery could hand the Englishman a constant flow of creativity, in a player that was one of the key creators in La Liga last term.

giovani-lo-celso-bentancur-tottenham-hotspur-mourinho-conte-loan

As per FBref, the Argentine averaged 2.48 key passes per 90 last campaign, ranking him among the top 1% of midfielders in La Liga in this decimal.

As well as being cut-throat in his dispatching of the ball in front of goal, the Spurs outsider ranked highly in terms of progressive passes, averaging an impressive 7.75 per 90, placing him in the top 4% of the Spanish top-tier.

Villa’s allocator of the pocket behind Watkins last term was predominantly John McGinn, who in comparison to Lo Celso, averaged 0.60 key passes per 90, suggesting just how much of an impact the presence of the Spurs man could have on the forward.

Hailed as an “incredible target man” and one of the “best outlets” by analyst EBL on Twitter, the Villa forward needs little incentive to score, making the interest in the 27-year-old an encouraging prospect.

The Argentine’s ability to read the game and dispatch the ball into a dangerous area makes him the perfect figure to deploy behind the Englishman in the free-flowing attack at Villa Park.

Monchi and Emery could pull off yet another superb piece of business this summer in capturing Lo Celso, who could be fundamental to the club’s progression next term.

Cricket Advisory Committee defends Dravid, Zaheer appointments

After they were criticised for over-reaching, the CAC has written to the BCCI’s committee of administrators detailing the reasons for selecting India’s new coaching staff

Nagraj Gollapudi13-Jul-2017

VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly – part of the Cricket Advisory Committee – had recently come under criticism for over-reaching•AFP

Reverberations continued to be felt after the appointment of Ravi Shastri as India coach, as tension emerged between the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) that appointed him and the BCCI’s Committee of Administrators (CoA). After a CoA member reportedly suggested the CAC had exceeded its brief in appointing Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan as consultants to support Shastri, the CAC hit back in an email in which it clarified its role in the process. On Thursday, a CoA member was quoted in Indian media suggesting the CAC had overreached. In response the CAC sent the CoA an email addressed to chairman Vinod Rai, making it clear that it had informed both the new coach Shastri and the captain Virat Kohli that they would be joined by Dravid and Zaheer.A member of the CAC strongly defended their appointments, saying the panel had got an email from Rai giving it full authority to oversee the coach recruitment process. “We have got an e-mail from the BCCI CEO [Rahul Johri] which had Vinod Rai saying you have got absolute free hand in deciding who will coach Indian cricket,” a member, clearly incensed, said. “We have those e-mails. We are writing to Vinod Rai.”According to the CAC member, they have not received any direct communication from the CoA questioning their efforts in bringing Dravid and Zaheer on board. He also pointed out that the CAC had made sure both Shastri – “he was taken into confidence on everything, he was absolutely ready with it” – and Kohli were in the loop. “We have taken Virat Kohli into confidence. Every person who is involved knew about this”.The CAC member said that the panel was trying to clean up the mess created by the BCCI in the first place when it gave Anil Kumble a one-year contract. He added that the board had asked the panel about their recommendation for the position of coach – after an advertisement inviting new applications had been sent out – and they had replied saying Kumble remained their first choice. But when he decided to resign, the CAC tried hard to, first repair the damage between Kumble and Kohli, and when that couldn’t happen, pick the best available option in Shastri.”We spoke to Kumble and we spoke to Virat on separate days. Then the BCCI representatives spoke to both of them together. After which Anil went out and resigned,” the CAC member said. But after all of this, the CAC member could not understand why they were being criticised. “You ask us to pick a coach and we do it honestly. And then we get battered for no fault of ours. We were asked to pick a coach last year independently. We picked the best candidate. That candidate gave you results for one year then you kicked him out. The CoA was nowhere in picture to solve the problem. We don’t have the authority to solve the problem. If the CoA was in England and solved the problem, it wouldn’t have come this far.”Anil Kumble resigned. You advertised for the job on May 25. Then you advertised again accepting fresh applications till July 9. You got applications. Who picked the best person?”

Man City Considering Move For 20 y/o Star Guardiola Loves

Manchester City are now considering a move for Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz to replace Riyad Mahrez, with Pep Guardiola believed to be a huge fan of the winger, according to a recent report from Football Transfers.

What's the latest Man City transfer news?

With Riyad Mahrez recently leaving to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, Guardiola is tasked with bringing in a replacement, and there have now been reports that a move for Michael Olise is a real possibility.

Although Chelsea have made an approach for Olise, a move to the Etihad Stadium is now believed to be "very probable", with the winger seemingly emerging as a key target to fill the void left in the squad after Mahrez's departure.

However, the Sky Blues do have some other players in mind, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently confirming that Rennes winger Jeremy Doku is "on the list" of targets to replace Mahrez.

Wirtz has also been a long-term target for the Citizens, with 90min claiming they had reignited their interest back in March, and according to a report from Football Transfers, they could now step up their pursuit of the Bayer Leverkusen winger.

The German is being eyed as an heir to Mahrez, with Guardiola said to be a huge admirer of his technical ability and potential.

Negotiating a deal for the 20-year-old may prove to be tricky, however, as Bayer Leverkusen have already sold Moussa Diaby during this transfer window, while Edmond Tapsoba is potentially heading to Tottenham.

With the futures of Jonathan Tah and Jeremie Frimpong also uncertain, the price for the youngster may be significantly inflated, but the Bundesliga club are willing to part with him for the right price.

One potential boost for City is that the player himself is open to a move, which could make negotiating personal terms much easier should a suitable fee be agreed with Leverkusen.

How good is Florian Wirtz?

There are indications the Germany international could be capable of going right to the very top, with football talent scout Jacek Kulig hailing him as "one of the world's biggest talents", in light of the impact he made after returning from injury last season.

The Pulheim-born youngster made a significant contribution for Leverkusen after showing the resilience to come back from a long-term lay-off, registering four goals and eight assists for the German side in all competitions.

Given that he has averaged 58.61 passes per 90 in the past year, placing him in the 96th percentile compared to his positional peers, the starlet could be a perfect fit for a Guardiola system, and he is already showing signs he could surpass Mahrez.

Florian Wirtz

The attacker is a far better dribbler of the ball than his potential predecessor, placing in the 99th percentile for successful take-ons, with the Algeria international ranking in the 35th, while he has also averaged more shot-creating actions.

Wirtz has exhibited that he is more than capable of being a fantastic long-term replacement for Mahrez, and it is exciting news that Man City are in the race for his signature.

Fraser, armed with pitchfork, seeks to salvage Middlesex season

Uxbridge is struggling to cope with the rain and that has meant desperate measures for champions Middlesex as they aim to protect their Division One status

It is an image more suited to club cricket: players, coaches and higher-ups helping to shift the covers, working together to remove surface water built up on the tarpaulin, doing what they can to preserve the prospects of play in a must-win fixture. The setting, Uxbridge Cricket Club fit. Only the individuals involved – a number of Middlesex players mucking in with their managing director of cricket Angus Fraser – gave you a sense that this was not your usual scene. But here were the County Championship’s defending champions getting their hands dirty in a bid to save their Division One status.Outground cricket has long been different things to different people. Right now, it is proving a nuisance to Middlesex. They started the round just 13 points ahead of second-from-bottom Somerset, off the back of a ridiculous two-point deduction because of a poor over-rate that, had a crossbow bolt not brought play at the Oval to a premature close on the the final day, would have been fixed. Even Hampshire, in third but only 26 points ahead of Somerset, are not quite out of the woods.Only 31.1 overs of play were possible before the third and most damaging shower of the day ensure the outfield would take well beyond the scheduled finish time to dry effectively. By then, Hampshire had reduced Middlesex to 76 for 3, after a steady opening stand from Nick Compton and Sam Robson. The frustrations of both dressing rooms were evident. Before the game was called off, players from both sides made their way to the middle to inspect the ends of the square. That they were muddy was evident to all.”It’s very disappointing,” said Middlesex captain James Franklin, tracksuit caked in mud from an hour’s graft. “The ground is very wet as it stands, even before today. It was only a 10 or 15-minute shower and play was done for the rest of the day. It’s pretty frustrating for all concerned. I know everyone is trying their best.” Of that there can be no dispute. The groundsmen were on site as early as 4.30am, working to remove whatever remaining water there was on the outfield. Middlesex ensured they had more covers by raiding their two other outgrounds – Radlett (where their 2nd XI are playing Essex) and Merchant Taylors. While Merchant Taylors would have been the preferred venue, the start of the school year ruled that out as an option. As for Radlett, investment in the square a few years ago was supposed to prepare the ground for first-class cricket, but the club still have reservations over the pitch. As for Lord’s, the third Test was scheduled to finish on Monday, the day before this match began. While Uxbridge have done their best, their facilities are not equipped to produce and protect a surface and ground fit for Championship cricket after the deluge in north-west London over the last week. At a first-class venue, with better drainage, a greater number of groundstaff and state of the art covers, we would have already seen the best part of six sessions.”I don’t know of too many other counties that play outground cricket in September,” said Franklin. “Most of it is played in June and July. We’ve just copped it with the weather and we’ve been unfortunate in those first two days. We’ll just hope we get some good, dry conditions overnight and hopefully we can still get two full days of cricket.”There were notable moments before play began this morning. Middlesex handed Max Holden his debut cap. He impressed on loan at Northamptonshire earlier this season with two centuries in 16 innings that produced 629 runs – the county tried to retain him for the rest of the summer – he was presented his cap at the start of the day and ended it with a single to his name. With a number of England Test players returning for duty at other counties, Toby-Roland Jones was not available for this round, nursing a sore side which he picked up at Lord’s in the third Test against West Indies. It is a precautionary move for England and Middlesex to ensure he is fit for the final two matches of the season.James Vince, set to skipper this match with George Bailey away on World XI duty, pulled up with a hamstring injury in the warm-up and thus handed over captaincy duties to Jimmy Adams. Vince’s replacement in the XI, the brilliantly named 18-year-old Felix Organ, was drafted in for his first class debut. Due to the lateness of Vince’s injury, Organ had to be pulled out of a Hampshire 2nd XI match, meaning he was travelling to the match as his side took the field having opted to bowl first.Adams’ biggest call came early when he pulled Fidel Edwards from the Gatting Way End after a three-over spell that saw the Bajan lose his line, frustrated by an unresponsive pitch. It was also the end most affected by the rain and, as a result, was is a little bit of a slip-and-slide.So Adams shifted Edwards to the Pavilion End, replacing him with bustling seamer Ian Holland at the top. The result was Nick Compton bowled comprehensively by Edwards, followed by Stevie Esknazi nicking off to an excellent catch from wicketkeeper Tom Alsop, diving to his right to take a sharp low catch. In between, Holland drew Sam Robson’s edge which required a smart grab from Adams at second slip.By 4pm, with the ground empty, Fraser was still out on the square, pushing a pitchfork into the ground to remove the surface water. As bitterly frustrating as the circumstances are, you cannot fault the will of the hosts.

Du Plessis critical of flat Potchefstroom pitch

After asking for a pitch with pace and bounce, South Africa got a flat track, which Bangladesh said reminded them of home

Firdose Moonda in Potchefstroom02-Oct-20172:28

Spotless performance from us – Faf du Plessis

Faf du Plessis has praised the manner in which South Africa won the first Test against Bangladesh but not the surface on which it was played. After asking for a pitch with pace and bounce, South Africa got a flat track – partly because that is what Potchefstroom usually produces; partly because it’s early season and the rains have only just arrived – which Bangladesh said reminded them of home.’Gibson brings positivity and energy’

Not only was the Bangladesh Test the first of the South African summer, it was also Ottis Gibson’s first as South Africa’s coach and the early reports are that he has warmed to the camp.
“He has been really good. It’s been a seamless transition,” Faf du Plessis said. “He has come in trying to understand how the Proteas works, how our culture works, how we go about our business. He’s observed, and then where there is an area where he felt he could add value, he has added that. From a bowling point of view I’m really excited to see what he is going to do with this team. I think he adds a lot of value in that department. He also gives the other coaching staff the freedom to be coaches in their specific areas. He trusts them. The team has really enjoyed him. He brings positivity and energy and every now and then a humourous joke.
“He is enjoying this challenge and he has got a few plans in place. The ultimate goal is also to try and make an impact on the World Cup in two years’ time, so we are already having some good conversations about that to make sure we are ahead of the curve with our planning. I’ve enjoyed working with him. He is a guy that likes structure, much like myself, so I think we work well together.”

“I have always been a guy that’s very honest in reflection,” du Plessis said.” If it was a good wicket, I praise and I give credit. But conditions-wise when you play countries like Bangladesh, it is important that you try and make sure whatever you get from the wicket gives your team some sort of advantage. There wasn’t much advantage for any team in these conditions. The good thing was that the groundsman said the wicket won’t spin and for three-and-a-half days or probably four days, the wicket didn’t spin off the straight so that was pleasing to see. We got that right.”Still, South Africa managed to make things work in their favour. After being put in, they only lost three wickets in racking up 496 runs. The bowlers worked hard against an initially patient Bangladesh line-up that achieved its highest total in South Africa and then a recklessly rushed one that was bowled out for 90 in 32.4 overs.”Our bowlers made changes, they adapted beautifully, they were consistent in their areas and we put Bangladesh under pressure for five days,” du Plessis said, admitting he sensed a second-innings collapse could come on the last morning. “Over four days, we had Bangladesh under so much pressure and we did all the hard work that if we got one or two early doors, we expected the pressure would be too much and they would fall over. We didn’t expect it to happen that quickly but that’s how it works in Test cricket. You are unlucky for a while, you do the hard graft without a lot of results and then all of sudden it just happens for you.”Though du Plessis’ assessment of South Africa’s performance as “spotless,” did not take into account into the dropped catches, it could be forgiven because they were without the leader of the attack, Morne Morkel, in their final push for victory. After taking the first two wickets in Bangladesh’s second innings and missing a third through overstepping, Morkel left the field with a side strain after bowling 5.2 overs. He will not return until mid-November, which rules him out of the rest of the Bangladesh tour.Morkel has been added to an injury list that includes Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander and Chris Morris, which robs South Africa of almost all their first-choice bowlers. Kagiso Rabada will have to step into the spearhead role and while South Africa have some options around the domestic scene, du Plessis admitted he doesn’t really know who may be next in line. The selectors have decided it is Dane Paterson, who was added to the squad on Monday afternoon.”It’s difficult to talk about all the domestic bowlers that are around,” du Plessis said. “I haven’t seen enough to make a fair call on what I think the standard of bowling is and who the best seam bowlers in the country are. I know the guys that are with us the majority of the time and we’ve got a few guys in and around the squad that I know exactly what they bring to the team and to the party. Outside of that, I haven’t seen a lot of red ball cricket.”South Africa have only had two rounds of their first-class competition and all six matches have been dominated by batsmen. Du Plessis indicated any inclusion to the squad will be a “back-up,” which could mean a comeback for Wayne Parnell – who is already in the squad – and more work for young allrounder Andile Phehlukwayo, rather than a debut for Paterson.Phehlukwayo only bowled seven overs on debut and showed great control but du Plessis sees him as more of a batting-allrounder in future. “Stats won’t tell you the story of the quality of batsman I think he can be,” du Plessis said. “That’s why he is filling that No.7 role, which is a really important position when it comes to the balance of the side. Generally when you have a fourth seamer and a No.7 batsman, his workload would be more on the batting front. And if you are needed from a fourth seamer perspective, you will bowl some overs. In the first innings, we didn’t bowl a lot of overs so his workload would have been less. Today, if we would have bowled without Morne, he would have bowled a lot of overs.”That time may come on Friday, when the second Test starts and South Africa seek a series win.
