Sunderland Eye Move For 20 y/o "Top Talent" Who Can Be Defoe 2.0

Sunderland’s striker position is still a topic of much deliberation.

The Black Cats seemingly possessed the perfect marksman to score the lion's share of the goals when they signed Ross Stewart in 2021.

During his first full season, the Scot was instrumental in the club’s promotion from League 1 to the Championship, scoring 26 times, netting in the play-off final, and being named the PFA Fans Player of the Year.

The 27-year-old began his Championship career in scintillating fashion notching 13 goal contributions in as many games. However, this eye-catching form has been intercepted by two, damaging long-term injuries, which means he’s missed 38 games in the last year.

After losing the season opener 2-1 against newly-promoted Ipswich Town, Tony Mowbray is aware that the club requires more attacking reinforcements if they are to compete in the top six yet again.

He said:

“Hopefully there will be some more attacking options in the building in the next week or two, they'll have to settle into the environment and get used to everybody.

"I think we'll get stronger, in six or seven weeks we might have Ross through the middle and Bradley in behind and that with Jack Clarke and Patrick Roberts out wide looks a formidable attacking line up.”

But, playing reliance upon a forward who has suffered serious hamstring and Achilles issues to instantly come back firing is a questionable strategy.

One name that has been tipped to support Stewart is Matthis Abline.

What’s the latest on Matthis Abline to Sunderland?

According to reports in France (via the Sunderland Echo), the Wearside giants are linked with Abline but are facing competition from Middlesbrough to land the striker.

Would Matthis Abline be a good signing for Sunderland?

Whilst remaining in the infancy of his career and possessing limited first-team experience, the 20-year-old has still amassed a respectable reputation and could be a decent option.

In 27 appearances as a centre-forward, Abline has registered 15 goal contributions.

Despite only starting eight Ligue 1 games last term, the Frenchman still ranks within the top 26% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for progressive carries and successful take-ons per 90.

The youngster has been described as a “top talent” by football reporter Tom Maston, and he became Rennes’ youngster scorer in European competition when he netted in a group-stage draw with Larnaca in 2021.

Stewart’s potential legacy at the Stadium of Light has been derailed by a series of unfortunate injuries, and it seems that the club is back in the hunt for a player to ruthlessly emulate the potent goal-scoring record of Jermain Defoe.

In consecutive Premier League seasons between 2015 and 2017, the Englishman bagged 30 times. David Moyes once lauded the veteran as “priceless” and across his illustrious career, he hit 163 Premier League goals.

Jermain Defoe

During his time up north, he was the club’s most important and influential player and Stewart’s patchy fitness record has paved the way for a new player to possibly take Defoe’s mantle.

Sunderland are a massive club, that undoubtedly should host top-flight football on a weekly basis. Therefore, with options such as Bradley Dack, the returning Stewart, and possibly Abline, they could head the club’s long-awaited return back to where it belongs.

Whilst the young forward has never played outside of his home country, he is clearly a lethal threat in the final third – given his eye-catching contributions in such little game time – and that makes him a real candidate to fill the void left behind by Defoe this season.

Should Mowbray and co win the race for his signature, then the Black Cats could well have a generational frontline talent on their hands, just like the former fan-favourite in his heyday.

– Honra a tua cor, rapaz! Honra a tua cor.

Zimbabwe to scale back on Test cricket at home

While they are committed to keep playing the longest format, preferably overseas, hosting teams has been leading to troubling financial losses

Hosting fewer Tests and scaling down operations may be the way forward for Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) as it navigates a changing cricket structure and tricky financial waters. Zimbabwe will not be part of the new Test league that is set to start in July 2019, and are happy with the development. They do not intend to stop playing Tests altogether, preferring in future to play them away from home. Instead they will shift focus to limited-overs cricket. In one way it is a formalisation of the status quo, in which Zimbabwe are already playing a greatly reduced number of Tests. “What we quickly realised was that hosting Tests is something that costs us a lot of money, and that is a commodity we do not have at the moment – in fact we owe people a lot of money,” ZC’s recently appointed MD Faisal Hasnain told ESPNcricinfo.”As things stand, it costs us money because we get almost negligible amounts from our current TV rights and sponsorships, and these continue till 2019. So if we were in a formal Test league, where we were forced to play Tests at home, we just would not be able to sustain it financially, unless we get substantial help from the ICC or from some other source – and the ICC Test fund no longer exists and other funding sources are few and far between.”Obviously, we will continue to play Test cricket, but in our current circumstances we will try and play them away from home, primarily to save costs. We will concentrate on playing more ODIs and T20s, home and away, under the ODI league and the T20 open format, which will hopefully enable us to cut expenditure and potentially generate greater revenues.”Zimbabwe have just finished hosting a two-Test series with West Indies, which has cost them somewhere in the region of $1 million. For an organisation in as much of a financial battle as ZC, that is an unnecessary strain. There is a possibility that, in discussion with Afghanistan and Ireland, Zimbabwe will formally ask the ICC for certain relaxations from the full requirements of the strict playing conditions – conducting matches without DRS for example. They may also ask for leniency in TV broadcast requirements for international cricket. This could ultimately make it more affordable to host Tests, and ZC has already taken up the matter, informally, with the ICC.Crucial to their quest to better financial health is income from the ICC, in the form of distribution and World Cup participation fees, which makes qualification for the 2019 event even more important. With that in mind, Zimbabwe has embarked on an ambitious project to convince certain players who had left the country to return, but the flipside of that has been the toll it has taken on their finances. Both Brendan Taylor and Kyle Jarvis are being paid more than they were at Nottinghamshire and Lancashire respectively, and were also given a small portion as an advance to secure their return. Solomon Mire, based in Australia, received what one source said was a “good deal, better than that of the other players who have stayed behind”.Unsurprisingly, the treatment of the trio has created issues within the team. “Players who come back automatically get paid more than the guys who are there,” one source said. “It’s bad because there are players who have made sacrifices to stay in Zimbabwe and they are suffering.” ZC denies their return has led to rifts; Hasnain says players have told him the atmosphere in the dressing room remains fine.Brendan Taylor walks out for the national anthem•ICC

In addition to employee and player salaries being part-paid at the end of October, and because of the financial challenges their board faces, Zimbabwe’s players have yet to receive their match fees for the Sri Lanka tour that took place in July. A proposed increase in player allowance for this season’s domestic matches has also not come to pass.At least one board member is understood to have opposed the efforts to lure Taylor, Jarvis and Mire back because of the expense, but the prospect of having them in the team for the World Cup qualifiers motivated ZC to do “everything it could”, according to the source, to convince the players to commit to Zimbabwe.ZC is attempting to stabilise its operations and finances under Hasnain and CFO Feroza Shariff, though given the country’s ongoing economic crisis and the limited opportunities to raise money that will not be easy.ICC money will be an important source of income and rationalisation of costs will have to continue. With no Test ranking points for Zimbabwe to concern themselves with, there would appear to be sense in not hosting home Tests. So even though they will not abandon Tests altogether, this could lead to a fundamental shift in outlook and the way they position themselves as a cricketing nation. The Logan Cup, Zimbabwe’s first-class competition, for example, may be shortened from its current format – in which teams play each other in a double round – to a single round, and there could be an increase in domestic ODI and T20 competitions. In that light, it is not outlandish to wonder whether West Indies might have been the last team that will play a Test in Zimbabwe for a while. According to the current FTP, Zimbabwe are scheduled to host Pakistan for a two-Test series next year in June-July, a tour which also includes three ODIs and two T20Is. Preceding that, Australia visit for a tour that was originally scheduled to include two Tests, but no longer does; instead they will feature in a T20I tri-series alongside Pakistan. For Zimbabwe Test fans, the good news is that their team’s schedule on the road is busier. They will play the inaugural four-day Test in South Africa over Boxing Day, and are in talks to become Afghanistan’s first Test opponents in February next year, most likely in the UAE. That is set to take place after a tri-series in Bangladesh and they are then supposed to return to South Africa for one Test, three ODIs and a T20I in October next year. In March, they are also due to host the ICC qualifiers for the 2019 World Cup, in which two teams from 10 will proceed.Another tour to Bangladesh – for three Tests and three ODIs in early 2019 – and a single Test in India along with three ODIs in March 2019 takes Zimbabwe to the end of the current FTP, with their hopes pinned on participation in the World Cup.

Bayern Munich Prefer No.2 Goalkeeper Ahead Of David de Gea

Reports in Germany claim David de Gea is very keen on a move to Bayern Munich but they supposedly have their eye on someone else.

What is David de Gea doing now?

The Spain international left Manchester United earlier on in the summer when after failing to agree terms on a new contract with the Red Devils.

He spent 12 seasons at Old Trafford, winning the Premier League, but is now a free agent and has yet to find a new club despite many leagues across Europe having now already started their new seasons.

On the dawn of the new Bundesliga campaign, as per Sky Sports Germany, FC Bayern are still looking for a replacement for Yann Sommer, who has moved to Inter Milan.

They had actually reached an agreement with Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga last week, but the Spaniard decided to switch to Real Madrid at the last moment – with flights to Germany in the process of being organised.

The report states that De Gea is "ready" to move to Munich, and his "lavish salary" will not stand in the way of a free transfer.

However, despite his apparent strong hopes of joining Bayern Munich, Manchester City's number two goalkeeper Stefan Ortega is the new "dream solution".

There has already been contact with the alternative goalkeeper and his management, and it's thought that the 30-year-old is keen on a move. Still, as of yet, there has been no agreement reached with either Ortega or Man City.

What trophies has David de Gea won at Manchester United?

At least the Spaniard enjoyed some great times in England with Manchester United, as he won the Premier League, the Europa League, FA Cup, English League Cup (twice), and the Community Shield (three times).

And upon leaving Man Utd, Da Gea sent an emotional message to the fans via his social media account, saying: "I just wanted to send this farewell message to all Manchester United supporters. I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love from the last 12 years.

"We’ve achieved a lot since my dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club. I took incredible pride every time I pulled on this shirt, to lead the team, to represent this institution, the biggest club in the world was an honour only bestows upon a few lucky footballers. It’s been an unforgettable and successful period since I came here."

He ended with: "Manchester will always be in my heart, Manchester has shaped me and will never leave me. We’ve seen it all."

However, the final stages of his time at Old Trafford were marred by heavy criticism for his on-field struggles and his departure came in a rather unsavoury fashion as the Red Devils initially found an agreement with the player to offer him new terms, before changing their minds and backing out of the deal.

Unfortunately for De Gea, it seems his luck this summer has remained much the same as he continues to look for a new club and while he must no doubt be desperate to land on his feet and sign for a club as big as Bayern Munich, it very much seems as though the Bundesliga outfit would much prefer to sign Ortega instead.

Malinga, Bopara fire Rangpur to first win

Rangpur Riders cruise home on the back of Bopara’s unbeaten 23-ball 39 after Malinga’s body blows restrict Rajshahi Kings on a dewy evening in Sylhet

In a game that lasted much longer than the average T20, even after taking into account time allowances, Rangpur Riders coasted to a six-wicket win against Rajshahi Kings. Ravi Bopara’s unbeaten 39 off 23 balls lent the flourish to their chase of 155, after Mohammad Mithun and Shahriar Nafees set them up with vital knocks upfront.Rajshahi were left to rue two dropped catches – by Luke Wright and Samit Patel – at crunch moments. They may also reflect on missed opportunities with the bat, posting just 154 for 8, achieved largely because of late flourish from Daren Sammy, the captain, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.Malinga’s infamous welcomeOn his BPL debut, Lasith Malinga was in for harsh punishment from Rony Talukdar, who hit him for two fours and a nonchalant flick for six over midwicket. A last-ball single capped off a 15-run over that gave Rajshahi an explosive beginning. The fizzleAfter a flying start, Rajshahi slipped from 61 for 1 to 90 for 5. That was largely because of an excellent catch from Thisara Perera to dismiss Luke Wright and a poor choice of stroke from Mushfiqur Rahim, out reverse sweeping. The slide continued when Malinga found his mojo, trapping Samit Patel with a toe-crusher. Talukdar’s dismissal to a slow Mashrafe off-cutter completed the slide. The Sammy touchThe captain took it upon himself to provide the late impetus. He brought out his typical bottom-handed whips and muscle to come up with a 18-ball 29. He found support in the form of Mehidy, who made 15 off five deliveries, to ensure Rajshahi blasted 58 off the last five overs.Wright’s catch offers Rajshahi a glimmerRangpur lost Adam Lyth and Johnson Charles inside the first four overs of the chase, before a rearguard lifted them. Mohammed Mithun biffed 46 quick runs and put on 75 for the third wicket with Shahriar Nafees, before Luke Wright’s sensational catch at backward point briefly gave Rajshahi hope. The deflating drop Before Wright could soak in the athletic catch at point, he dropped a sitter to reprieve Bopara on 18. At that stage, Rangpur still needed 44 off 32. The asking rate was on the rise. The England allrounder would go on to remain unbeaten till the end, carving out a win that didn’t seem as easy as it eventually turned out to be. Wright’s disappointing night ended with another drop, running back from deep midwicket. Those were Rangpur’s winning runs in the 19th over.

Leeds Must Make "Decision" Over "Quality" Player

The latest potential departure from Leeds United will be dealt with "in a totally different manner to the others" however, the impending deadline of September 1st means the club will have to make a decision regarding the "quality" player soon, per The Athletic's Phil Hay.

Leeds United news – what is the latest?

The last few months have been particularly miserable for the Leeds faithful, and unfortunately, things don't look like they'll be picking up too soon either.

The club's relegation to the Championship at the end of last season was bad enough, but as they say, when it rains, it pours.

During their drop-down to the second tier, the West Yorkshire outfit have had to contend with a prolonged and incredibly disruptive takeover from the 49ers group and an exodus of players that just seems to keep going.

Read the latest Leeds United transfer news HERE…

So far, the club have seen eight first-team players leave, with more like Tyler Adams and Luis Sinisterra soon to follow.

One of the reasons that so many of these crucial players have been able to just leave is because the club had agreed to clauses in their contracts that allowed them to either leave on loan or permanently should the club get relegated.

However, one player that didn't have a clause like that is Italian international Wilfried Gnonto, who has reportedly downed tools and refused to play after the club turned down an offer from Premier League side Everton, per the Daily Mail.

This has left the club with more leverage in this situation but also means they must choose to either reintegrate him back into the team or take the money for him, per The Athletic's Phil Hay.

Leeds striker Wilfried Gnonto.

He explained the situation on The Square Ball YouTube channel, saying:

"I think that is going to have to be dealt with in a totally different manner to others like Adams and Harrison, for example. There is no release clause. Our understanding is that he was going to train on his own now, and Farke, without naming him specifically, was brutally honest, I thought on Saturday in saying, 'If I have this where somebody doesn't want to play first, then he just won't train with us, he won't be in our dressing room he'll be off on his own.'

"So that's a scenario there, which means Leeds have to make this decision about what they do with him. Do they say to him, 'This is what you can go for, find yourself club, and if they pay that money, you can leave', or do they actually make him stick around [and], I don't know, try and find a way to resolve this in a way that lets him come back into the team?

"Although I don't think he'll have been deaf to what was going on at Saint Andrews on Saturday, particularly with the away end."

How much did Leeds United pay for Willy Gnonto?

According to The Athletic, Leeds paid FC Zurich around £5m to sign the then 18-year-old, in what was seen as a great deal for a young up-and-coming star of European football, a star that unfortunately looks like he'll be plying his trade away from West Yorkshire if things continue as they are.

He wasn't a runaway success in his debut Premier League campaign last year, but he did show enough promise and the odd glimpse of excellence to suggest that were he to stay at Elland Road and fight it out in the Championship, he'd be a brilliant asset for Daniel Farke to call upon.

In his 24 league appearances for the Whites last year, he scored two goals, provided four assists, took 0.9 shots per game, won one Man-of-the-Match award and averaged a match rating of 6.48, per WhoScored.

wilfried-gnonto-everton-transfer-news-opinion-premier-league

His underlying numbers are also a bit of a mixed bag, with FBref, which compares players in a similar position across Europe's top five leagues, placing him in the top 4% for blocks and the top 18% for progressive carries, but the bottom 33% for successful take-ons and the bottom 11% for non-penalty expected goals, all per 90.

Ultimately, while Leeds and Farke would certainly be better off keeping the player former Italy boss Roberto Mancini described as "quality", if he continues to push for an exit, and they can make a profit from his sale, he hasn't performed so well that they couldn't try and find a suitable replacement elsewhere, one that wants to stay and fight.

Leeds Move To Sign £20m "Real Deal" Has Now Been Hijacked

Leeds United were reportedly leading the race to sign Aston Villa striker Cameron Archer this summer, but Fabrizio Romano has given a worrying update as it seems the 49ers' pursuit has collapsed.

What's Cameron Archer doing at Villa?

At Villa Park, Archer currently pockets £20k-per-week, which he isn’t really earning considering that he’s nothing more than a fringe player having spent his career carrying out three loans with Solihull Moors, Preston North End and most recently Middlesbrough. But that could all change should he nail down a regular starting place elsewhere.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein previously revealed that the Midlands outfit are open to selling the 21-year-old amid strong interest, and CBS reporter Ben Jacobs name-checked the Whites as a potential suitor when asked who could be looking to secure his services in the Championship.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, he said: “Leeds are one of the clubs, no doubt Middlesbrough are another. So I would expect movement on Archer between now and the end of the window."

According to Football League World, Daniel Farke and the 49ers were at the “head of the chasing pack” alongside Sheffield United for the centre-forward this summer, with his club having set a £20m price tag for their academy prospect.

However, even though it initially appeared that the hierarchy were well-placed to successfully land their target before the end of the window, there has been a gutting update which supporters won't want to hear.

Middlesbrough's former loan striker Cameron Archer.

Are Leeds signing Cameron Archer?

Taking to X, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Aston Villa have struck a deal with the Blades for the transfer of Archer, meaning that Leeds are set to miss out on securing his services despite previously being out in front, with the fact that Paul Heckingbottom's side are in the top-flight likely a big deciding factor as to the striker's next destination. He wrote:

"Sheffield United are set to sign Cameron Archer on £18/19m deal from Aston Villa — medical booked #transfers. Villa will also retain a buy back clause as it’s part of the process — like Ramsey at Burnley."

How many goals has Cameron Archer scored?

At Middlesbrough last season, Archer clocked up a remarkable 17 goal contributions (11 goals and six assists) in 23 appearances in the northeast which shows how prolific he is, but he also made a positive impact even when the ball didn’t always hit the back of the net.

The Walsall-born talent, who has the versatility to operate everywhere across the frontline, was averaging 1.8 shots and 1.2 key passes per second-tier game, form which saw him receive three man-of-the-match awards from WhoScored, highlighting the constant threat he can bring to the side in the final third.

Aston Villa’s “real deal”, as dubbed by presenter Jack Collins, additionally shares the same agent, Unique Sports Group, as Karl Darlow, so this existing connection that his representative already has to the club could have given chiefs a slight advantage in their pursuit, but it turns out that it wasn't enough having been pipped at the post meaning that the boss will have to turn his attention towards other options.
