Man United: £80k-p/w flop has rinsed the club of £55m

It is fair to say Manchester United's recruitment in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era has been underwhelming. Some might consider that an understatement.

The Red Devils have spent well over £1bn since 2013.

Yet in that period, they have finished outside the top 4 on five occasions – David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and Erik ten Hag have all been trusted to bring in their players. For the majority, it just hasn't worked.

Of all these managers though, Jose Mourinho was the one responsible for spending the most on transfers during his reign between 2016-2018.

According to figures collated by Sky Sports, 'The Special One' oversaw £430 million of expenditure on 12 players, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Matej Kovar being free transfers, fees were only actually spent on 10 players, making the statistic all the more extraordinary.

Despite such a significant outlay, only two of the Portuguese manager's signings remain at the club.

The most recent departure was once described as being a "rash" player and one who cost the club a total of £55m in transfer fees and wages.

That is despite barely making a century of appearances for the club.

We are, of course, talking about the enigma that is Eric Bailly.

What happened to Eric Bailly at Man Utd?

Bailly joined the club from Villarreal in 2016 as part of Mourinho's first transfer window at the club. He was the second signing of the new era, following the arrival of mercurial striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Ivorian arrived at the club with much fanfare. At just 22 years old, many tipped Bailly to be a massive success at the club.

Former Arsenal and Man City legend Kolo Toure, speaking to The Sun (via the United Review), stated that Bailly had the ability to "become one of the best defenders in the world."

"He can be up there with the top defenders United have had. He’s young and will learn from working with one of the best managers in the world, and of course he’s going to get better. Definitely," he added.

Those were some big words that heaped pressure on the defender. However, he endeared himself to the United faithful immediately after wrestling the rowdy Jamie Vardy off the pitch on his debut.

His performance that day helped United to win the Community Shield. That would be the first of three trophies Bailly would help his side secure that season, along with the EFL Cup and the Europa League.

In his debut season, Bailly appeared 39 times in all competitions and cemented himself at the heart of United's back four. This would turn out to be as good as it got for him, though. The following season, he made fewer than half the number of appearances. As the years went on, he would be featured more and more sparingly. In his final full season at the club, Bailly made just 7 appearances.

His hat-trick of silverware from his first season was also the last for him, as he was never able to add to his trophy cabinet for the remainder of his time at the club.

A loan spell in 2022 to Marseille didn't work out, and he has finally moved away permanently, joining Besiktas on a free transfer this summer.

What went wrong for Eric Bailly?

The reasons why Eric Bailly did not have a successful Manchester United career are varied.

One simple reason was the fact that the centre-back was very injury-prone.

According to Transfermarkt, he was out of action with injury for 566 days during the entirety of his Old Trafford tenure – during this period, he is believed to have missed 126 games for club and country.

These injuries would not only have prevented him from playing but also hindered his development. Joining the club in his early twenties meant that he had untapped potential and time to develop. However, spending too much of that time on the sidelines meant Bailly was unable to develop his game and reach the heights some predicted for him.

Others believe that Bailly's biggest downfall was his own performances. While he had the tendency to do something absolutely miraculous, like beating multiple Chelsea players with stepovers in his own penalty area, he also had another side that led to calamity.

Following what turned out to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's final home game as manager of The Red Devils, Bailly was criticized for being "a rash defender who always has a mistake in him" by Trevor Sinclair. He was also labelled as the "culprit" for both goals following "bad, bad defending."

The defender himself believed that the reason he wasn't able to achieve success at United was due to the focus on homegrown and British talent within the club.

He stated, "The club should avoid favoring English players and give everyone a chance." This assessment did not go down well, with Jamie Carragher responding, saying that Bailly wasn't being picked due to his own poor performances.

How much did Eric Bailly cost Man United?

United paid Villareal £30m to secure Bailly's services back in 2016. He signed a contract worth £80k-per-week, based on the figures put together by the experts at Capology,

Bailly earned over £4m per year on his salary alone. This meant that throughout his time as a Man United player, Bailly received roughly £25m in wages. This means that the combined total was £55m.

The £30m The Red Devils spent on Bailly makes him their sixth most-expensive defender in history. At the time of his arrival, he was the most expensive defender the club had ever bought.

Bailly only featured 113 times for the Old Trafford side during his 6 years in the squad. As a result, the amount of money he earned per game is staggering.

Through earning close to £25m in wages over his 113 games, Bailly amassed a whopping £217,700 per appearance for the club. That is more per game than most of his teammates' weekly salary.

Not only that, but Bailly also made close to £6.5m in his 566 days out with injury. That accounts for just over a quarter of the 29-year-old's total earnings during his stay in Manchester.

This, of course, does not include any bonuses that Bailly would have been entitled to, which would have inflated the price further.

How much did Man United spend on Bailly's replacements?

Whilst responding to Bailly's claims that English players experienced preferential treatment at Manchester United, Jamie Carragher mentioned that the club "keep buying players to replace him."

Since The Ivory Coast international's arrival, United have bought 5 other central defenders. Of the five of them, four cost the club more than Eric Bailly did. Jonny Evans' return to the club in 2023 is the only exception.

In total, United have spent over £200m on central defenders since Eric Bailly's arrival. That is a staggering amount to replace someone that many believed had world-class potential.

How much do other Man United defenders make?

Despite being a record-breaking transfer when he signed, Bailly left United with the second-lowest wage of all defenders in the first team.

Only Tyrell Malacia earned less than his former teammate, with the Dutch full-back earning £75k-per-week.

United's two primary right-backs Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan Bissaka, are the only other two defenders earning under six figures per week, clocking in at £85k and £90k respectively.

Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof are both on £120k per week, with Luke Shaw ahead of them earning £150k-per-week.

The club's record defender and former captain Harry Maguire is the second highest-paid defender at the club, making a little less than £200k-per-week.

It is multiple-time Champions League winner Raphael Varane who leads the way. His staggering £340k per week is a 325% increase on what Bailly's wages were as he departed the club.

Blundell and Jamieson give England the runaround

Ben Stokes’ back will be the focus of attention over the next few days, while the exploits of the New Zealand XI lower order raised questions about the England attack

Andrew McGlashan at Seddon Park14-Mar-2018England began four days of Test preparation in Hamilton on Wednesday with the first two days played with the pink ball under lights. The matches aren’t first-class, England bowled first by agreement and teams can continue batting a whole day even if bowled out, so the games are essentially glorified middle practice. It all started well for England, reducing the New Zealand XI to 30 for 5, but a chastening afternoon and evening followed as Tom Blundell and Kyle Jamieson added 163 and both scored centuries. Here are a few things that caught the eye.Ben Stokes’ backStokes-watch has not finished with his comeback in the one-day series. He will sit out the first two-day game with a back problem but it is being played down as nothing serious; England are hopeful he will play over the second two days, he pushed himself hard during the ODIs and may be feeling the effects. However, it is likely his workload in the Tests will need to be managed or he could be considered as a specialist batsman. In that case it would again leave England needing to find a way to balance the side. At the very least, Stokes won’t have had any middle time with the pink ball. James Vince, who could be vulnerable if Stokes plays as a batsman, had seven overs on the opening day here, but if he’s needed for that many in a Test, things haven’t gone well.Early points to England’s quicksNew Zealand’s Test openers, Jeet Raval and Tom Latham, walked out to open the XI’s innings – a chance for Raval to have an early sight of the pink ball and for Latham to adjust from one-day cricket. It didn’t work out for either of them first time around. James Anderson, quickly back into the groove, pushed one across Latham to find the outside edge and then Raval had a lazy waft at Stuart Broad’s first ball to give Ben Foakes another catch. With Henry Nicholls chipping to midwicket and Colin de Grandhomme edging Mark Wood behind, it wasn’t a great day for New Zealand’s Test squad. There was time late in the day for Raval to fall a second time, edging a good delivery from Broad. Not the ideal preparation.Wood opens the bowlingBroad is on 399 Test wickets has been working hard between series on trying to regain the outswinger. He had to wait a little while for his first bowl of the tour, though, as Wood was given the new ball ahead of him. If Stokes and Chris Woakes (rested here with a hamstring niggle) are fit, it’s hard to see how Wood would fit into the Test side, so it was an interesting decision from Joe Root. Wood’s first spell ended with 3-2-1-0 and then Broad struck with his first delivery.Blundell hard done byTom Blundell made a century on Test debut against West Indies but, two matches later, is out of the team with BJ Watling having recovered from his hip problem to regain his place. That is an unsurprising decision – Watling averages 38.05 in Tests – but Blundell ensured that the pressure will be on Watling to perform. Having come in at 15 for 4, he became increasingly aggressive during the afternoon – his second fifty took just 49 balls – to reach three figures from 149 deliveries. It won’t have hurt that New Zealand coach Mike Hesson was at the ground by this time. When he had 131, he felt he had enough and retired to give someone else a chance. When the ball goes softThis opposition is stronger than what England faced during their warm-ups in Australia, although the manufactured match situation is unsatisfactory. It wouldn’t have mattered if New Zealand had been skittled, they would have all come in for another bat. At least, though, this was genuine resistance. The recovery, again, raised the question of what this attack can do when the Kookaburra passes about 25 overs. There was some fill-in bowling used at times, but England went 45 overs between actually taking a wicket themselves, and Moeen Ali was treated with some disdain, conceding over four an over. The fact that that period involved a No. 8 without a first-class fifty will raise a few concerns.Who is Kyle Jamieson? The 23-year-old six foot six Canterbury fast bowler, who was part of the New Zealand Under-19s squad in 2014, missed the start of this season with injury, has a highest first-class score of 40, and is more known for his exploits with the ball. A few around the ground raised an eyebrow when he batted ahead of Scott Kuggeleijn (three first-class centuries) in this side, but he certainly didn’t look out of place. He took a particular liking to Wood, with a strike-rate of 163 against him, while Anderson did not take kindly to some of his batting – at one stage the umpire had to step in. His century came from 110 balls when he nudged a single off Moeen. It won’t class in his official records, but he can tell the story of this innings for years to come.

Rangers: Ibrox side wanted ‘perfect’ signing for £5m, now he’s a £26m UCL star

When Glasgow Rangers won their first Premiership title in a decade during the 2020/21 campaign, it was viewed as a landslide moment in the recent history of the club.

Celtic had gone on to achieve unparalleled domination of Scottish football due to the fact Rangers had been forced to start at the bottom of the professional ladder and although it took a while for the Ibrox side to reach the top, it looked as though it could be the start of something special.

Under Steven Gerrard, the Gers had built a solid squad which ended that league campaign unbeaten, while his team conceded just 13 goals across 38 matches, a British record.

That summer should have seen the Light Blues kick on and vastly improve their first-team squad while condemning Celtic to another season of chaos and in-house fighting which would have allowed Rangers to assert their dominance.

Instead, the club failed to strengthen. Combined with defeat in the Champions League qualifiers, it ensured that they failed to take advantage of their wonderful title-winning season and the truth is, the Gers are still paying for it now.

They could have added some quality players to their ranks during that summer transfer window, and one name sticks out above everyone else’s – Joey Veerman.

Were Rangers close to signing Joey Veerman?

The midfielder had been linked with a move to Glasgow as far back as April 2021 with former Ibrox striker Michael Mols praising his fellow compatriot amid the reports, saying: “I saw the stories linking Joey Veerman with Rangers.

Soccer Football – Europa League – Group A – Arsenal v PSV Eindhoven – Emirates Stadium, London, Britain – October 20, 2022 Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka and Gabriel Jesus in action with PSV Eindhoven’s Joey Veerman REUTERS/Dylan Martinez

“He’s a really good technical player and a good passer, really good with the ball but I don’t know if Scottish football will suit him.

“Scottish football is more aggressive, like the English Premier League which is physical, so I have a little bit of doubt in my mind.

“I could be completely wrong and maybe I’m not a good judge but that is my opinion. He’s really good with the ball and I would compare him a little bit to Wim Jonk from my time.

“He is perfect with the ball and in possession he’s a really great player. His passing and movement with the ball is really relaxed in a good way.”

Why didn’t Rangers sign Joey Veerman?

The Gers missed out on him during the summer of 2021 and as the campaign progressed, it was clear that the midfield area had gotten rather stagnant over the course of a few months, with the club leaking goals left, right and centre.

A dynamic midfielder such as Veerman would’ve been ideal for the team. Gerrard departed to join Aston Villa in November 2021 and his replacement was Giovanni van Bronckhorst, someone with a vast knowledge of Dutch football. It looked as though this could be key in luring the Heerenveen starlet to Scotland.

It wasn’t to be for Rangers as Veerman ended up joining his boyhood club PSV Eindhoven for a fee of around £5m, which was more than affordable for the club at the time, and considering his success over the previous 18 months at the Dutch side, Van Bronckhorst had a nightmare by failing to secure his signature.

What is Joey Veerman doing now?

It didn’t take long for the Dutchman to show the Ibrox side just what they had missed out on as during his first six months at PSV, he ended up registering 13 goal contributions – six goals and seven assists – across just 24 matches as the club won the Dutch Cup.

This sort of attacking dynamism certainly would’ve given Van Bronckhorst a major boost in the heart of the midfield, and it wasn’t a surprise to see the Light Blues suffer, domestically anyway, failing to beat teams such as Ross County and Motherwell, despite holding leads during their matches.

Veerman kicked his performances up a notch last term, scoring nine times and grabbing 14 assists in all competitions, although PSV were knocked out by the Gers in the playoff round of the Champions League.

The former Herenveen starlet was in wonderful form in the Eredivisie during the 2022/23 season, ranking second across the squad for overall Sofascore rating (7.65), first for big chances created (17) and second again for key passes per game (3.1).

Compare these statistics to the Rangers squad in the Premiership last season and Veerman would’ve ranked first for Sofascore rating, big chances created and key passes per game, clearly suggesting that the club should have splashed out the £5m and brought him to Ibrox.

The 24-year-old is now not only shining domestically but has taken his game to new levels on the continent, and he proved it against the Light Blues last month in what was a repeat of their playoff tie from the season before.

Across the two legs, Veerman scored once, averaged five key passes per game, grabbed two assists and succeeded with 100% of his attempted dribbles in what can only be described as dominating performances in the midfield.

What is Joey Veerman valued at now?

It is perhaps no surprise to see his value rise sharply since his move to the Dutch giants. According to the CIES Football Observatory, the Dutchman is now valued at €30m (£26m) and this marks a stunning rise since the start of 2022, when he joined the club.

The Gers have had a fair few shockers in the transfer market over the previous few years, but missing out on Veerman has to be up there as one of the worst.

Not only would the player have vastly improved the current team, but he wouldn’t have broken the bank either and PSV are now reaping the rewards of taking a gamble and signing him.

His value has soared, and it certainly looks inevitable that he will leave the Eredivisie side in the near future. When he does, Veerman will secure the club a major profit on their initial outlay.

It is a case of what might’ve been for Rangers having missed out on the Dutch talent and Michael Beale will be hoping to avoid scenarios like this in the future, that’s for sure.

Mushfiqur has made amends for Bangalore – Tamim

Mushfiqur was the man who was largely blamed for Bangladesh’s loss in the World T20 in 2016, but his Colombo blitz has helped him take centre stage for good reasons

An infamous failure; now a famous chase – Mushfiqur Rahim centre-stage in both.Few defeats in Bangladesh’s history stung like the 2016 World T20 loss to India, when with two runs needed from three balls and Mushfiqur on strike, Bangladesh proceeded to lose three wickets and eventually crash out of the tournament.Mushfiqur was the man who was largely blamed for that capitulation. Having just struck a four off Hardik Pandya, he had got in the bowlers’ face and gesticulated in an exaggerated celebration instead of buckling down to get the two further runs. In contrast, he had played the innings of his life – and perhaps the best ever for Bangladeshi in a T20 – to propel his team to a target of 215. It is the fourth-highest successful chase in the format, and it came at a venue that favours bowlers more than most. Having watched Mushfiqur’s unbeaten 72 off 35 balls from the dressing room, opener Tamim Iqbal felt his team-mate had made amends for Bangalore.”The guy who made the mistake in Bangalore, he didn’t do it today,” Tamim said. “I always feel that there’s a lot to learn from a good game or a bad game. The amount of criticism Mushfiqur copped on that day, I think he should be praised the same amount now. He handled it very well today.”He didn’t have time to think. He had to go from ball one. He kept on batting, and finished the job. I think it is probably his best T20 innings.”So exhilarating was the chase, and so unexpected the result after Sri Lanka had piled on 214 for 6, that it may now only be natural for confidence to now spread in what had been a misfiring Bangladesh side. Tamim certainly hoped that would be the case. Following Thursday’s defeat against India, their captain Mahmudullah had spoken about batting “fearlessly”. Throughout the pursuit, Bangladesh’s batsmen took intelligent attacking options, and put bowlers defending a mammoth total under sustained pressure.”We might not have big power hitters but we can plan and play a Bangladeshi brand of T20 cricket,” Tamim said. “We can’t follow England or West Indies because we have different kind of players. We don’t have someone like MS Dhoni to come at No 7. We don’t have a Chris Gayle to take on the bowlers from the first ball. I think we have smart cricketers, who are different. It is not about hitting sixes and fours all the time. In the middle overs we saw that by taking a lot of singles. Boundaries will come.”This will definitely give us a lot of confidence. It is one of our best wins but I am a big believer in the fact that we haven’t conquered everything by just one win. It has given us confidence of chasing 215 runs. It is not the end, but just the start. We really needed this as a team.”Among Bangladesh’s failures against India had also been an inability to rotate the strike efficiently – an area in which Tamim felt the team had made a substantial improvement on.”We don’t have power hitters but we found boundaries and singles whenever it was required. Soumya Sarkar’s 24 may not be noticed in the scoreboard, but it was very important for us. He rotated the strike and struck boundaries in the right time. We were desperate to win today’s game, especially after what happened in our last series at home. But the format is such that you always have to come up with something new.”Bangladesh’s victory means all three sides now sit equal on two points, having secured a win apiece in the first round.

Celtic: Rodgers must unleash his £16k-p/w magician over Hatate

Celtic head coach Brendan Rodgers will have some difficult selection decisions to make today as his side return to Scottish Premiership action this afternoon.

The Hoops travel away from Parkhead to face Livingston and will be hoping to maintain, and possibly extend, their lead at the top of the table.

They are, however, heading into the match off the back of a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Feyenoord in their opening Champions League group stage match during the week.

One player who must be unleashed from the start today after being on the bench in midweek is Scotland international David Turnbull, who should be brought in to replace Reo Hatate in the starting XI.

How did Reo Hatate perform against Feyenoord?

The Japan international played 58 minutes against the Dutch side and struggled to impose himself on the game in the middle of the park.

Celtic endured a rough evening as they were beaten fairly easily by Feyenoord and Hatate's performance played a role in that, particularly with his lack of quality out of possession.

Although, it was Joe Hart at fault for the first goal as Calvin Stengs' free-kick from distance bounced up in front of the former England international, which resulted in the ball squeezing through his fingers and into the back of the net.

Gustaf Lagerbielke and Odin Thiago Holm were also both sent off as the central defender was shown two yellow cards and the Norwegian talent received a straight red for a late studs-up challenge.

Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh then sealed all three points for the home side on the night as the ball broke free for him in the box and the ex-Brighton ace smashed it into the top corner to make it 2-0.

Hatate, meanwhile, lost two of his three duels (66.6%) and failed to make a single tackle, interception, clearance, or block throughout his time on the pitch, as per Sofascore.

This shows that the Japanese lightweight, who was also dribbled past once, struggled to deal with the physicality of the game as he did virtually nothing to put a stop to Feyenoord's attacks, which allowed them to continually pile on Hart's goal.

He did not make up for his lack of defensive nous with quality in possession as the 25-year-old maestro only completed 71% of his attempted passes and did not create a single 'big chance' for his teammates, along with his failure to find the back of the net himself.

How many goals has Hatate scored this season?

The Hoops midfielder is yet to get his name on the scoresheet this term as the talented ace had failed to score in three Premiership outings prior to his struggles against Feyenoord.

Hatate has averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.77 across three league matches so far this season and failed to score a single goal or create a 'big chance' at the top end of the pitch. He also has been dominated by opposition players with a duel success rate of just 33% in the Scottish top-flight.

This comes after the Japanese whiz scored six goals and created ten 'big chances' in 32 league games for Celtic throughout the 2022/23 campaign.

Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate.

He showcased his creativity on a regular basis with 1.3 key passes per game for the Bhoys, which was only bettered by five other players, and ended the season as the club's top-scoring central midfield ace.

However, Hatate is yet to get back to those levels this time around and that is why Rodgers must unleash Turnbull from the start today, after the Scottish gem's excellent start to the campaign.

How many goals has David Turnbull scored this season?

The former Motherwell midfielder has produced three goals in five Premiership matches since the start of the 2023/24 season as Rodgers has placed his faith in the talented wizard.

Turnbull only started six league games under Ange Postecoglou last term and, as a result, only contributed with four goals and four 'big chances' created for the team across 28 appearances in total.

The Northern Irish head coach returned to Parkhead this summer and has been able to get the creative gem firing with an average Sofascore rating of 7.28 across five starts, which is the sixth-best score within the squad and significantly better than Hatate's 6.77.

Turnbull, who was hailed as a "terrific" player by ex-Hoops ace Peter Grant, has provided a goal threat from midfield and created 1.4 chances per match for the side, which shows that he is currently offering more than the Japan international in the final third.

Will Turnbull start against Livingston?

Therefore, Rodgers should bring the 24-year-old talent back into the starting XI ahead of Hatate for this clash today as, based on the evidence of this season so far, he is more likely to make a telling contribution at the top end of the pitch.

The £16k-per-week creator has also won 39% of his individual duels this term and, whilst that is still not an impressive statistic, that suggests that he could provide a bit more strength in midfield.

Celtic midfielder David Turnbull.

Hopefully, the Scottish dynamo can go on to replicate his outstanding form for the club under Neil Lennon's management during the 2020/21 campaign.

He averaged a phenomenal Sofascore rating of 7.47 across 36 Premiership starts that term as the ex-Motherwell prospect chipped in with nine goal and 12 'big chances' created to go along with 2.9 key passes per match.

No Celtic player averaged a higher Sofascore rating for the club that season and none of his teammates produced more than 1.9 key passes per clash in the top-flight.

This shows that the potential is there for Turnbull to be an outstanding performer for the Hoops over the course of the campaign if Rodgers continues to select him week-in-week-out in order to boost his confidence and match sharpness.

Hatate's difficult start to the season has opened up the door for the Scotland international to nail down a place in the starting XI for the foreseeable future and his performances so far suggest that the shirt is his to lose for now.

Therefore, he should return to the team for the clash with Livingston today and will be given the opportunity to add to his goal tally in order to keep the Japanese whiz out of the side for even longer.

Chapecoense

Figueirense
