Parish has contacted elite manager for Crystal Palace job alongside Glasner

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish is believed to have "sounded out" another manager alongside former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner, as the Austrian now fiercely contends to replace Roy Hodgson.

Hodgson now in danger of imminent Palace sacking

The Englishman, after a very disappointing season thus far at Selhurst Park, is now facing the very real threat of being sacked before this summer.

"Exceptional" manager praised by Guardiola is enticed by Crystal Palace job

One key thing attracts him to Selhurst.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 13, 2024

Parish's widely reported original plan was to give Hodgson until the end of this Premier League season, with his contract set to expire in June, but it is now believed that he could be shown his P45 long before then.

They're now in discussions with Glasner over potentially succeeding Hodgson in south London, and the Europa League-winning tactician would come as a very interesting appointment given his successful stints in Germany.

According to reliable journalist Ed Aarons of The Guardian, it is only a 'matter of time' before Parish gives Hodgson his marching orders, despite the fact he is due to face the national press at lunchtime today.

Palace are currently flirting with the Premier League relegation zone, having scored fewer goals than every other side in the division except bottom three sides Everton, Sheffield United and Burnley.

Numbers like that make for grim reading if you're an Eagles supporter, with protests currently surrounding the club's ownership and general direction. The appointment of an elite Hodgson alternative could do wonders to both turn the tide and get fans back on side.

Parish has been actively looking at new potential Palace managers long before opening talks with Glasner. Another coach to be linked with the post is former Wolves and Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui, with Aarons sharing some details about their interest this week.

Parish has "sounded out" Lopetegui for Palace

According to the reporter, writing in a piece for The Guardian, Palace have sounded out Lopetegui over the manager's job via their chairman, and failed in a push for Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna before opening talks with Glasner.

If negotiations with the latter fall through, perhaps the Spaniard could be a brilliant alternative, especially considering other reports state Lopetegui is attracted to the quality of Palace's squad.

While his time at Wolves apparently ended on a sour note, Lopetegui is also a Europa League winner and has been praised by Molineux chief Jeff Shi as a "strong personality".

"Julen has a strong personality and he’s a coach with clear leadership," said Shi.

"Not just with football players but with the clubs he has been at. He has a lot of experience in elite football and his track record is proven."

Mohammad Nabi's 12-ball 43* maintains Kent's perfect start

Allrounder’s five mammoth sixes steal show in seven-over game, as Surrey slump to third defeat in five

ECB Reporters Network30-Jul-2019

Mohammad Nabi stands tall and bunts one away•BCCI

Mohammad Nabi smashed five sixes in a remarkable 43 not out off only 12 balls as Kent Spitfires overwhelmed Surrey by nine wickets in a rain-shortened Vitality Blast contest at The Oval.Nabi’s assault included three sixes off Rikki Clarke in the third over of Kent’s reply to Surrey’s seven-over total of 54 for 4. He then finished things in the next over by slamming legspinner Imran Tahir for six, four, and six from successive balls. It all meant Kent had raced to victory with three overs to spare, and strengthened their position in the South Group with a fourth win from four games.Tahir had given Surrey some hope of defending what always looked a below-par total by having Kent’s acting captain Daniel Bell-Drummond lbw for one in the first over of their reply. But Afghanistan allrounder Nabi soon snuffed out those hopes with his big hitting, while Heino Kuhn looked on admiringly from the other end with nine not out.Bell-Drummond said: “Mohammad strikes the ball so well, doesn’t he? It is a pleasure to have him around. It was a big toss to win tonight, especially with the rain around, and we were able to know exactly what we had to chase.”Things are going very well – there’s a lot of experience and a lot of pace in the team, so it makes my job easy.”Surrey captain Aaron Finch said: “There was no doubt that our total was short of what we needed, but you are never sure how to go about it when you bat first in these circumstances. To walk out of the sheds after rain delays and immediately go hard from the start is always difficult.”Only opener Finch broke the shackles of Kent’s disciplined bowling, finishing 36 not out from 20 balls with two sixes and a four. Play did not start until 8pm, initially because of afternoon and early-evening rain with the match starting as a 13-over affair. But after just one ball – bowled by Adam Milne to Will Jacks who played and missed – more rain drove the players off again and, eventually, the match re-started at 8.50pm as a seven-over contest.Milne, remarkably, completed a maiden in that opening over with three byes the only runs scored, but Jacks cut the first delivery of the second over from Hardus Viljoen to the square third-man boundary to get Surrey’s innings going.Paceman Viljoen soon had his revenge when Jacks mis-hit to extra cover to go for five, leaving Finch to loft the last ball of the powerplay – the first ball of the third over – straight for four before bludgeoning Nabi’s offspin for six and, in the final over, reverse-flicking Milne for another maximum.Ollie Pope managed just one four, a brilliant reverse-flick off left-arm seamer Fred Klassen before hitting to deep mid-wicket off Nabi and Jordan Clark lost his off stump swinging at Viljoen. Surrey’s fourth wicket fell when Tom Curran skied to extra cover in Milne’s second over.Their total looked way short of par, even on a pitch offering plenty to the seamers, and so it would prove.

Saudi club planning to make contact for "outstanding" Tottenham star

Tottenham Hotspur, after losing Harry Kane last summer to Bayern Munich, could do without suffering the same fate with another star player this summer. That said, reports suggest that scenario is now a possibility, with Saudi Arabian clubs now planning to make contact over one particular player.

Tottenham transfer news

The Lilywhites did well in the face of Kane's departure, welcoming the likes of James Maddison, Brennan Johnson and Guglielmo Vicario to hand Ange Postecoglou a much-improved squad. And with that squad, the Lilywhites have been competing for a return to Champions League action, though currently sit fifth and five points adrift of Aston Villa in fourth with a game in hand.

Tottenham now want to sign Pedro Porro alternative with "sheer pace"

The north Londoners are concerned with a lack of full-back depth.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 24, 2024

That said, another key exit could quickly derail any progress made in North London this season. Instead, the focus must be on incomings and just who could help the Lilywhites take that crucial step back into the Premier League's top four. Reports certainly suggest that's the plan too, with Spurs already linked with moves for the likes of Jarrad Branthwaite ahead of this summer.

Though, that's where the good news may end. According to Rudy Galetti, Saudi clubs are planning to make contact over a deal for Heung-min Son this summer. Galetti posted the news on X, saying:

Those in Saudi are unlikely to be shy when it comes to splashing the cash for Son's signature, either, with a number of players making big-money moves in the last couple of years.

Spurs must keep hold of "outstanding" Son

Son's numbers have proved that he is more than capable of performing at this level, even now at 31 years old. The South Korean has scored 12 goals and assisted a further six this season and will no doubt play a part in Spurs' top-four ambitions.

Heung-min Son celebrates for Tottenham.

Postecoglou is well aware of that quality too, praising his captain, saying:

"He's been outstanding as a leader and as a player. I've put him in that nine position now and he just works so hard. When I talk about that great environment with the players, Sonny is leading that with Madders (James Maddison) and (Cristian) Romero."

When it comes to leadership in North London, meanwhile, losing two captains in two seasons would hardly be an ideal situation for Postecoglou to be handed, reinforcing the need to keep hold of Son even more.

When the summer transfer window does arrive, Spurs must simply hope that Son resists the urge to become the latest star to jump ship to Saudi and instead remain in North London as part of Postecoglou's project. It could certainly be a nervous summer for the Lilywhites, as they face yet another potential key exit.

'Priority is to build a team that can dominate' – Pakistan coach Misbah-ul-Haq

“But then at certain times you have to assess the strength of the opponent and make your strategy accordingly.”

Umar Farooq05-Sep-2019

Misbah-ul-Haq is all smiles after his appointment•AFP

There is a perception around Misbah-ul-Haq that he is a bit defensive. The man has hit the second-fastest hundred in Test history and led Pakistan’s team to No. 1 in the longest format and yet he was typecast as tuk-tuk. That nickname hasn’t had much occasion to pop up in the last few years but now, in his first press conference since being appointed Pakistan’s new head coach and chief selector, the issue cropped up again as people wondered about the nature of a team under his charge. For his part, Misbah wants his players to play attractive cricket. “I have been saying this forever that there is some confusion in the way we are thinking about being defensive and aggressive,” he said. “I always believed that your strategy is based on the resources you’ve got. Ideally, you obviously try and wish to have resources that you can just dominate and knock out the opposition.”Being a coach, I will try to build a team that plays aggressively and wins easily. But then at certain times you have to assess the strength of the opponent and make your strategy accordingly.”For example, recently during World Cup England was considered un-matchable with players are playing the pure form of modern cricket. But at the same time New Zealand were the other way around playing with conservative approach from 80s. Despite their batsmen not clicking, they formed a strategy according to their resources and they were in the final with England playing the next level of cricket. So it shows that you have to work around your resources and plan accordingly. My priority as coach to have a team that plays an attacking cricket and dominate and that’s the way forward but at certain times you have to re-look your strategy.”Misbah has been given a three-year contract by the PCB, his dual role giving him great power, but also great responsibility.”Everyone asks questions about accountability. Now Misbah will be accountable for selection as well as performance,” Wasim Khan, the CEO of the Pakistan Cricket Board, said. “The concept of head coach-cum-chief selector is innovative. After being introduced to our system, it has also put more responsibility on Misbah’s shoulders as he will now be solely responsible and accountable for the team’s performances. Furthermore, as the new domestic system has also been implemented, head coaches of the provincial teams will give feedback to Misbah about the talent in our domestic cricket.”Misbah was quick to play down the influence he might have as Pakistan’s coach, reiterating that the captain will remain in charge.”You don’t always get what you want then it affects you mentally and tactically you don’t have the resource and it affects the performance,” he said as he tried to explain why he took on both roles.”There has been a practice that final authority on picking the playing XI is with the captain and it will remain the same. The captain who is operating in the field needs to have full confidence in the team. Before reaching a final decision, there will be huge debate and discussion and sometime regardless of the depth in understanding there might be a difference of opinion in 15 or 16 picks or XI but at the end you either get convinced or make other convince and move on.”Along with Misbah, Pakistan have brought on another senior figure to help lead them forward. Waqar Younis was tempted to re-join the Pakistan coaching staff, as bowling coach, even though his last stint with the team ended quite bitterly.”He was a wonderful bowler and we won’t get any better option than him to be our bowling coach,” Misbah said. “In Pakistan, Wasim [Akram] and Waqar are the top most guys [to talk to about bowling] and everyone comes after [them], so I have no doubt about any problem. We have a very good working relationship and we both knows our limits.”We have worked a lot together in Pakistan team and in PSL and we know each other very well. Professionalism is there, he will never interfere in my domain and I won’t interfere in his. He is also very much clear that direction comes from head coach and bowlers will be working with him. He has some plans and we know what to do when bowlers are not delivering and how to drive them to deliver.”

Spurs hit the jackpot with £86m ace who was once ahead of Foden & Saka

The development and togetherness of Tottenham Hotspur as both a team and as a club have been brilliant this season.

Ange Postecoglou’s arrival has been the main catalyst for this, with his philosophy and style of play being enjoyable for both the players and the fans.

Thankfully, it’s also bringing success on the field, with Spurs just five points behind Aston Villa in fifth while also having a game in hand.

Cristian Romero with Tottenham teammates

A lot of the recent culture shift at the club is also down to the success in the transfer market, with new signings performing on the pitch.

That said, there’s one player in the Spurs squad who was once better than Phil Foden.

Dejan Kulusevski vs Phil Foden in 2020

2020 was the year that Dejan Kulusevski and Foden really began to cement themselves as future superstars, with the two creators recognised as that on a global scale.

In the 2020 Golden Boy ranking, the Swede was actually ranked above the Man City gem, finishing sixth, one place better than Foden in seventh. Interestingly, they both ranked ahead of Arsenal's golden boy, Bukayo Saka, too.

During the 2019/20 season, Foden was still working his way into the City squad, with Pep Guardiola managing his minutes. The number 47 played 23 times in the Premier League, scoring five goals and picking up two assists.

However, Kulusevski had taken on much more responsibility for his Parma side during that same campaign, tearing up the Serie A for a mid-table team. The Spurs winger scored ten goals and provided nine assists in 33 starts for the Italian club.

Phil Foden.

The left-footed gem joined Parma on loan as a Juventus player, the club that Kulusevski eventually joined Spurs from on loan in January 2022.

Kulusevski’s value in 2024

Kulusevski was an instant hit at Spurs, playing an important role in the second half of the 2021/22 campaign, where he netted five goals and picked up eight assists in 14 starts.

The loan was for 18 months, enabling the “superb” Sweden international, as per Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, to complete the entire 2022/23 season at Tottenham.

Dejan-Kulusevski-Spurs-Tottenham

In truth, Kulusevski struggled to progress from the form he showed the season prior, netting twice and picking up seven assists in the league, but it was a transition period for the club.

Nonetheless, Spurs made the 23-year-old’s loan permanent in the summer, spending just £25m to acquire his services on a five-year deal.

Fast forward to today, and he’s the most expensive Spurs player in regards to CIES’ Football Observatory’s estimated value, even being worth over three times more than Son who's valued at just £26m, owing to the short amount of time still left on his contract.

The attacker still has plenty of potential that he’s yet to reach, and due to the lack of quality left-footed right-wingers on the market, his profile is almost priceless.

Furthermore, Kulusevski is starting to thrive once again in a Tottenham shirt under the influence of Postecoglou, scoring six goals and picking up two assists this campaign already.

Nonetheless, it’s clear that Spurs truly hit the jackpot by signing Kulusevski, who continues to improve and impress on the right of the attack, and he is certainly living up to his predicted pathway.
