One of the Premier League’s breakout stars in the 2023/24 season has been Newcastle United’s Lewis Miley. The 17-year-old has risen quickly through the ranks at St James' Park to become a prominent first-team player under Eddie Howe.
The midfielder has played 26 times for the Newcastle first team this season, scoring once and registering three assists, including one in the Champions League at home against AC Milan.
There is little doubt that Howe wants to give youngsters more opportunities. Aside from Miley, the likes of Elliot Anderson have had a role to play under the former Bournemouth boss, and he has discussed a pathway for other youngsters, including Joe White.
Aside from academy graduates, Newcastle have also invested in talent further afield. Australian Garang Kuol is currently on loan at FC Volendam in The Netherlands, and he signed for the Toon from Central Coast Mariners in January 2023.
However, another player is coming through, also currently on loan, this time at Feyenoord, who might be right for a breakthrough season in 2024/25.
An exciting prospect on the wing
The player in question is 19-year-old Yankuba Minteh, a winger whom Newcastle signed from Danish side Odense BK for a fee rumoured to be around £5.8m. The youngster is already a full international with The Gambia and competed in the 2024 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Yankuba Minteh on loan at Feyenoord
In terms of his profile, Minteh is a direct winger who loves to get on the ball and run at defenders with his sheer pace.
One of the most prominent features of Minteh’s game is when he drives into the opposition penalty box. He ranks in the top 1% of positionally similar players in leagues comparable to the Eredivisie for carries into the penalty area per 90 minutes this season, 6.49, according to Fbref.
Minteh also works very hard off the ball, as his Fbref numbers reflect. The 19-year-old ranks in the top 2% among attackers for tackles won, with 1.78 per 90 minutes.
To break this down even further, Minteh wins 0.80 tackles per 90 in the final third, showing he is a diligent presser, something which would stand him in good stead in Newcastle’s system.
In total, the left-footed winger has scored eight goals and registered three assists for Feyenoord this season. That includes a Champions League goal away to Celtic in the final group game. Impressive numbers indeed.
Minteh's first-team hopes at Newcastle
After impressing for Feyenoord this season, there is no doubt Minteh will be hoping to return to St James’ next season and stake a claim for a first-team spot.
Minteh’s impressive work out of possession, as well as his direct nature with the ball, would certainly be a benefit to him in Howe’s direct and intense Newcastle side.
With lots of first-team experience behind him, both in Denmark for Odense BK and this season for Feyenoord, plus international tournament football under his belt, there is no reason to believe why Minteh cannot break into Newcastle’s squad next season.
Yankuba Minteh for Feyenoord
The 19-year-old will surely be hoping that he can follow the path set by the likes of Miley and become another exciting player for Newcastle under the tutelage of Howe.

Former West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo has called Nicholas Pooran’s attempts at altering the condition of the ball during West Indies’ third ODI against Afghanistan a “silly mistake”.”I know Pooran since he was 17 years old and he is not that type of player,” Bravo said on Thursday in Abu Dhabi where he will be playing in the T10 tournament as Maratha Arabians’ captain. “Yes, that (ball-tampering) happened, the evidence is there. But deep down inside he doesn’t mean anything [bad] to cheat or anything.”ALSO READ: Dwayne Bravo hints at international comebackPooran was banned for four T20Is after video footage showed him scratching the surface of the ball with his thumbnail. He admitted to the offence, a breach of level 3 of the ICC’s Code of Conduct, and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Chris Broad. In his defence, the young batsman said it was an “isolated” incident, which would not be repeated as it was an “extreme error in judgment” on his part.Pooran will now miss the ongoing three-match T20I series against Afghanistan and the opening match of the subsequent exchanges against India.Bravo said Pooran needed to be given time to understand his mistake. “It is just a silly mistake on his part,” Bravo said. “He accepted it. But I know the individual personally, and that is not something he will ever do or encourage anyone to do. It is just a simple mistake, he gets caught, he accepts it, but he is far from that type of player.”

Shaheen Afridi will play for Hampshire in next year’s Vitality Blast.Shaheen, who has become an important part of Pakistan’s seam attack in all formats over the past 18 months, is expected to be available for the duration of the T20 competition as an overseas player.”I am delighted to sign with Hampshire for the upcoming Vitality Blast competition,” Shaheen said. “I have always enjoyed playing in England in front of the fantastic fans and I look forward to joining this historic club for my first experience of county cricket.”The 19-year-old Shaheen had a particularly enjoyable time on English pitches earlier this year, claiming the best figures for Pakistan in a World Cup with 6 for 35 against Bangladesh at Lord’s in July. Those figures were also the best of the tournament as he finished with 16 wickets at an average of 14.63.An imposing and accurate left-arm paceman, Afridi burst onto the international scene in April 2018 when he earned a T20I call-up for Pakistan’s series against West Indies. He also made his Test and ODI debuts last year. In 29 limited-overs internationals, Shaheen has taken 54 wickets at an average of 21.02, including 14 wickets from 10 T20Is at 20.57.Hampshire Director of Cricket, Giles White, said: “A lot of the best sides in T20 cricket possess a very good bowling attack and Shaheen adds an extra dimension to the group we have, offering excellent accuracy, pace and lots of variations. He’s an emerging young talent in world cricket so we’re delighted to have him on board for next summer’s Vitality Blast.”

Last night wasn't quite the night many Arsenal fans were hoping for when it was revealed that they would be facing Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Mikel Arteta's side may be entirely different from the one that seemed to succumb to the German behemoths on an annual basis in the mid-2010s, but the fans are still the same, and so revenge was very much on the menu.
Unfortunately for the north Londoners, a mixture of uncharacteristically sloppy defensive errors and the magnitude of the occasion saw them lose their 1-0 lead and settle for a hard-fought 2-2 draw.
It was a night that few of the Gunners' starting XI could be particularly proud of, but there was one starter who truly had an evening to forget – well, half an evening to be accurate.
Jakub Kiwior's performance vs Bayern Munich
Yes, the Arsenal star who had the worst evening of all, and consequently the shortest, was Poland international Jakub Kiwior.
The former Spezia man was brought into the starting lineup after Oleksandr Zinchenko's less-than-stellar showing against Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend and to add some more defensive stability to the backline.
Unfortunately for Arteta and Co, the 24-year-old did quite the opposite and spent much of the first 45 minutes being spun by the electric pace of Leroy Sané, who did quite literally spin the full-back in the build-up to Bayern's penalty for the second goal.
His performance was described as "shakey" by Arsenal content creator and fan Alexander Moneypenny, and while that may sound harsh, the Standard's Dan Kilpatrick was even more scathing.
The journalist gave the starter a 3/10 on the night and wrote that he was 'flat-footed for Bayern's leveller and skinned by Sane for the visitors' second goal', noting that it was a 'harsh lesson of the realities of this level.'
In all, it wasn't a very good showing from the Arsenal man and one that will likely see him dropped from the starting lineup ahead of this weekend's game against Aston Villa and the second leg next week.
The players who could replace Kiwior
So, realistically, two players, Zinchenko and Takehiro Tomiyasu, could replace the Polish defender.
The former has seen his stock fall quite dramatically among fans and pundits alike this season, with his defensive fragilities seen as a disaster waiting to happen by many. This is demonstrated by Andy Townsend telling talkSPORT (via the Metro) that the Ukrainian is "flimsy and flaky."
However, for the second 45 yesterday, he looked relatively solid in his own third and gave the Gunners another outlet when going forward. While he did misplace a few passes here and there, his ability to find a man on the other side of the pitch could be essential in unlocking this Bayern defence.
On the other hand, what Tomiyasu lacks in his passing range, he makes up for in physical presence and defensive resilience.
The 6 foot 2 titan has spent the vast majority of his career playing between centre-back and right-back, so unlike his Ukrainian teammate, his first thought is not how to play his next diagonal, but instead, where he should be positioned to stop the next counter-attack.

Described as "superb as a right-back, superb as a centre-back" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the Japan international is undoubtedly the clear choice should Arteta want to shore up his backline in the most high-stakes of games, but with a win needed on the weekend and the Allianz next week, it might be time to bring Zinchenko back in the lineup.
Anyway, Tomiyasu can always come in to defend a lead, should Arsenal gain one, that is.

Leeds United will hope any murmurs that the wheels are coming off their promotion push are silenced when Daniel Farke's men visit Middlesbrough in the next intense round of Championship games.
Winless in their last three second tier clashes, it is vital that the Whites respond to their critics by confidently beating Michael Carrick's Boro on their own patch to stake a claim again that they deserve to win the league.
Whether Farke's men do end up returning to the Premier League at the first time of asking or have to make do with another season in the Championship, the summer transfer window looks set to be a busy one for outgoings and incomings at Elland Road.
Leeds will look to cut ties permanently with at least one forgotten face in the off-season, the £90k-per-week outcast struggling with his current club Everton as they fight against being relegated from the top flight.
Leeds United manager Daniel Farke watches a Championship game.
Jack Harrison's time at Everton
Jack Harrison must be cursing his luck at why he relocated to Goodison Park, having been in a dogfight at the bottom of the division with Leeds before moving on to the Toffees in a now similar predicament.
The 27-year-old has four goals and three assists next to his name this season for Sean Dyche's downtrodden men, but the former Leeds star turned villain has only managed to fire in one league strike this year to try and help his loan club stave off the drop.
Harrison's dire display when Everton were humiliated 6-0 away at Chelsea last time out showcases a man bereft of confidence, failing to fire a single effort on the Blues goal from an unmemorable 45-minute spell at Stamford Bridge.
It remains to be seen whether or not the Merseyside club even keep Harrison around on a permanent deal, but from a Leeds perspective, the West Yorkshire side will be more than content with getting the out-of-sorts 27-year-old off their books when this season is over and done with.
Whilst Harrison leaving the club would have been seen as an initial blow to Farke and Co at the start of the campaign, with the once-adored Whites winger bagging six goals in his last full season at Elland Road, other wingers at the club have more than stepped up now in his absence.
The likes of Daniel James and Wilfried Gnonto have been terrifying to watch down the right channel for Leeds this season, with James making Harrison's once solid spot his own by firing in 13 goals in all competitions to become a much-loved figure.
Dan James
In contrast, Harrison's best-ever total donning Leeds white for a full campaign was a lesser ten.
Even when he was performing at his best for Leeds with Newcastle United once interested, football journalist James Marshment would still describe the former Manchester City man as "frustrating" to watch.
Moreover, the £90k-per-week Harrison raked in during Leeds' poor 2022-23 season must also have been a sticking point as to why the Whites insisted on the 27-year-old moving onto Merseyside despite his impressive numbers.

That excessive pay packet would make Harrison the highest earner in the Leeds camp currently if a loan move never happened, with the promotion-chasing Whites more at ease with dishing out a hefty £70k-per-week wage to Georginio Rutter based on his stunning season to date.
Harrison will find on his return to Elland Road, if Everton don't want to pay up to win him permanently, that there's no longer a real space for him in the new-look starting eleven crafted by Farke.
Leeds will hold out hope that they can offload Harrison – who looks set to leave this summer – for a fee close to the £11m they forked out in 2021 soon, bringing his up-and-down time in West Yorkshire finally to a subdued end.
Leeds preparing to sell player who Daniel Farke doesn't want
The Whites are planning for a future without the player.
