Cricket calls should wait for football return – Healy

Queensland board director Ian Healy said the NRL and AFL could show the way for cricket to resume

Cricket’s custodians in Australia should have the luxury of being able to wait on the outcomes of the winter football codes’ attempts to return to play before making any far-reaching decisions about cutbacks to the game’s costs, the Queensland board director Ian Healy has said.As Cricket Australia (CA), their state association owners, and players union partners remain at considerable odds over the central governing body’s prescribed medicine to handle the financial shocks of the Covid-19 pandemic, Healy pointed out the fact that the National Rugby League (NRL) and Australian Football League (AFL) competitions will effectively provide a pointer for how cricket might fare next summer. This is not only in terms of the logistical and health precautions required, but also how the game is received by broadcast audiences starved of sport for several months at least. Healy’s words reflected the kind of scepticism CA’s chairman Earl Eddings and fellow director Paul Green are believed to have faced when presenting the organisation’s finances and forecasts to the states and the Australian Cricketers Association on Thursday. There is concern that cost-cutting decisions, ostensibly made to save money for worst-case scenarios next summer, may be made without a full enough picture. This has already been reflected in CA stand downs for some 200 staff, and is believed to have spread to Cricket Victoria (CV).”It’s been a bit of a bombshell and I think the staff have felt it to be a bit of a bombshell,” Healy told SEN Radio. “They were incredibly accommodating, the staff, to agree to what their conditions now are, so that was a great show of respect by the staff of CA. We all know how much the staff love working for our brands, whether that be state or national cricket. But it was a surprise to all to come down so quickly and so early.”I thought they’d be, and I think they are, working really hard behind the scenes in organising the India trip and they really want the NRL and the AFL to get going so that they’ll show us how to do the quarantine stuff and isolation stuff and run a comp. They’re going to try to do it with 18 and 16 teams and Australian cricket have only got two, maybe four if the Indian women play our women. There may be four teams we have to isolate – it shouldn’t be anywhere near as difficult as these domestic comps will need to be. So hopefully they get going and show us the way.”Proposed cutbacks at CV are understood to be overwhelmingly in the area of community cricket, where “boots on the ground” to grow the game in schools, clubs and rural areas were a large part of strategic funding by CA to all states since the financial model changed in 2012. The states had collectively pushed back on CA’s original request for a 45% reduction in annual grants, with current discussions surrounding the concept of a 25% drop with inbuilt variation up or down, depending on revenue fluctuations related to next summer’s schedule. But there has been a cascade of uncertainty around the game since CA and its chief executive Kevin Roberts claimed that the game may be broke by August without drastic cuts to spending amid the pandemic. That has led the states, players and some staff to ask questions about the direction taken, and leave CA’s leadership trying to justify their chosen path. As of Thursday night, there still appeared to be far more work to do on that front.”I hope Cricket Australia do expose their financial information to the players association and the states as quickly as possible, so those bodies can make their calls on what they need to do for their businesses and cricket looks different but it’s still on the rails,” Healy said. “The saving grace to the World Cup is it is not necessarily all CA, it’s an ICC organising committee. So it’s sort of removed a bit.”They’ll be doing a whole lot of work on their stuff, and there’s one next year, another World Cup, so that might go by the by, a little easier than other times, because it is a lot to be done. We’re doing it tough with 16 clubs in NRL, let alone 15 countries. It probably will turn to India quite quickly, and I’m wondering if there’s any other countries that want to come over here too. We’re pretty isolated and a little island and we might be open for business.”The other thing I’ve been really impressed with is the players’ comments. Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Tim Paine, David Warner, Steve Smith, they’ve all said we’re happy, we’re in this together, like the catch cry of the whole virus thing. I don’t think there’s many surprises in that MoU, the agreement between the players and Cricket Australia, everything’s there for such instances.”

Sky pundit praises Paratici after hearing Tottenham could sign £51m star

Ex-Tottenham transfer chief Fabio Paratici, who still advises the club on a consultancy basis, has been praised after news that Spurs are pursuing a £51 million star for Ange Postecoglou.

Paratici role explained as Spurs make summer transfer plans

Paratici's influence at N17 still very much remains, despite his official worldwide ban from football.

Ange told to sell Bissouma and build Tottenham team around £90 million star

The player in question would set Tottenham back a hefty sum.

ByJosh Barker May 5, 2024

The Italian was responsible for bringing in key players like Destiny Udogie, Dejan Kulusevski, Cristian Romero and Rodrigo Bentancur to name a few, thanks to his network of contacts in Serie A. Paratici, though, was forced to resign from his post as managing director last year after being slapped with his ban courtesy of FIFA – thanks to his alleged involvement in financial mispractice whilst at Juventus.

Paratici had his ban partially reduced in 2023, though, meaning he can assist Spurs in a limited capacity. Postecoglou has admitted contact with Paratici as the pair, alongside chairman Daniel Levy and the wider Spurs recruitment team, work on summer transfer planning.

Tottenham are laying the groundwork to sign a new forward with help from Paratici's contacts, according to reports, and the 51-year-old has also received glowing reports on Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori.

It is also believed that Spurs are considering a bid for RB Leipzig star Dani Olmo, who commands a price tag of around £51 million if any interested side wish to make a formal move for the Spaniard.

Postecoglou apparently believes Olmo would slot perfectly into his Spurs system, which is testament to Paratici and Tottenham chiefs after they identified him.

Robinson praises Paratici as Tottenham target Olmo

Speaking to Tottenham News, Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson has praised Paratici as Spurs eye a move for Olmo this summer, claiming the winger is exactly the calibre of player who they should be going for.

“I think he’s a good player and has attracted a lot of Premier League interest. If Tottenham are in for players like that, that can only be a good thing. You can’t question the Spurs recruitment.

“[Fabio] Paratici’s fingerprints are still all over it, looking at the signings of Van de Ven, Vicario, Bentancur, Kulusevski. It’s rare that Spurs go out and pay a big fee for individuals. They did it with Johnson from Nottingham Forest but that wasn’t a huge fee and with Richarlison for the £50million they paid to Everton.

“But actually, if they’re going to be in the bracket of teams challenging to sign Olmo, it’s an improvement. The Champions League is still there. Looking at Spurs’ games, it is very difficult with games against Liverpool, Burnley, Manchester City and Sheffield United.

“They’ve got it all to do, but the Champions League makes a huge difference to the budget for next season. If they’re in for the likes of Olmo, it’s an improvement and they’re in the right market.”

Interview has happened: Chelsea could hire a "genius" who Colwill will love

Chelsea’s search for a new manager has already begun, immediately after the departure of Mauricio Pochettino.

It seems that the Argentine and the Blues board weren’t quite on the same page throughout his short stint as manager, but one thing is for certain; he got them playing some excellent football towards the end of the season.

Funnily enough, it’s been reported that Todd Boehly is keen to appoint a possession-based manager who prioritises attacking football, which was exactly what Pochettino provided.

Nonetheless, he’s no longer at the club. Here’s one candidate who could transform the Chelsea squad, and in particular, Levi Colwill.

Chelsea’s search for a new manager is underway

As per reports in Portugal, Chelsea have included Roberto De Zerbi and Fulham boss Marco Silva on their manager target list.

It’s stated that the Brighton manager has been seen for months as a strong option and he’s actually already been interviewed by the top dogs at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian could be a genuine option for the Blues, given the fact that the 44-year-old has just left the Amex and will be itching to get back into management in a new environment.

Obviously, as he’s now without a club, the manager is available to join a club free of charge, unlike some other targets who are tied to contracts.

What a Roberto De Zerbi Chelsea team could look like

If you follow the Premier League, you’ll already be well aware of how a De Zerbi-coached side operates.

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi watches on from Elland Road as the Seagulls visit Leeds United in the Premier League.

A focus on ball-playing individuals, who must be able to operate in the tightest of spaces, even inside their own penalty box.

It’s almost guaranteed that when facing a De Zerbi team, the opposition will barely have a sniff off the ball, as shown by his side averaging 60.2% possession this season.

De Zerbi’s style of play is very much a high-risk, high-reward strategy, and last season it worked brilliantly, as he led the Seagulls to the Europa League, the first European campaign in the club’s history.

However, one player who would slot into the Italians’ team with ease is Colwill, who already knows exactly what it takes to perform and meet the standards set by the young coach.

Brighton defender Levi Colwill.

The extremely highly-rated defender spent last season on loan at the Amex Stadium, playing 17 times in the Premier League and really thriving in his possession-based 4-2-3-1 setup.

If the former Shakhtar Donetsk boss were to arrive at Stamford Bridge, it’s reasonable to presume that Colwill would feature within his first-choice backline given his technical class, as shown by his 75.5 touches and 59.8 passes per game in the league last season. As we can see from the table below, he was far more assured in possession and was given a greater importance on the South Coast.

Although he’s been classed as a “genius” by analyst Statman Dave, the former Sassuolo boss is an extremely stubborn manager, which can work for or against him at times.

He always demands that his side stick to his principles, regardless of opponent, game state, or score line, which may initially require patience from the Blues faithful.

Some may believe that this is slightly naive and one of the reasons why Brighton have won just once in ten games, but with the right squad, it could prove to be a masterful approach.

Overall, there are risks to signing any manager, in truth, but at least De Zerbi has the mentality to deal with being Chelsea boss, which may not be the case for others.

Interim Cricket Australia chief Nick Hockley calls for unity after redundancies

He said the game is “by no means broken” ahead of the challenge of pulling the summer together

Daniel Brettig18-Jun-2020

Nick Hockley will step into Cricket Australia•Getty Images

On Tuesday, Nick Hockley was named as Cricket Australia’s interim chief executive in the wake of the deposed Kevin Roberts. On Wednesday he was jointly presiding over the awful task of making 40 employees redundant from the governing body. And on Thursday he was speaking for CA on radio, stressing the importance of unity in the game.As the T20 World Cup local organising body’s chief executive, Hockley had a seat at CA’s executive table, so was close at hand to watch the chaos that unfolded from the moment Roberts and the CA board chose to announce mass staff stand downs in April while seeking deep financial across the game.Highly rated by his own staff, Hockley was seen as the ideal interim while CA went on a more extensive search for the next long-term chief executive. But he has been left with the unenviable task of patching up staff, state and player relationships in the decreasing amount of time available between now and the start of a summer that must be run as effectively and efficiently as possible in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.ALSO READ: Timeline: Three months that brought down CA chief Kevin Roberts”It’s been an extremely difficult time, this week even more so,” Hockley told . “Yesterday we had to let go some really, really great people, but it’s all about getting the team back to work, reaching out to the states and territories and the ACA. We are so much stronger together.”We’ve got a huge amount to look forward to with India coming. In very difficult circumstances it’s a massive privilege to be asked [to take the role]. I’ve been in the game here for eight years, I care deeply about the people. It’s by no means broken.”In many respects we’ve been extremely fortunate compared to other sporting codes with the timing of Covid-19. Australia are world champions three and a half months ago, rank No. 1 in four out of the five ICC ranking formats, we’ve got India coming, we’ve got the World Cup, we’ve got the Ashes the following year. There is so much to look forward to and really it’s about pulling together.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Hockley recalled the week after the wildly successful women’s T20 World Cup final, watched by more than 86,000 spectators at the MCG, as the moment in which all plans were thrown into chaos, and sympathised with the highly conservative course of action taken by Roberts and the CA board chaired by Earl Eddings.”I was there with a seat at the table in those deliberations, from the perspective of making sure that the World Cup was integrated in terms of contingency planning and we’re all working together on the best measures around restrictions and things,” he said. “And really the world fell off a cliff, it was pretty much that Monday or Tuesday after the final, and no-one really knew what it meant. But the situation has been evolving, and the measures we announced yesterday I think are prudent and necessary in the circumstances.ALSO READ: T20 World Cup ‘unrealistic’ and ‘unlikely’ this year – Cricket Australia chairman”Things like standing down the majority of the staff, which has just been extremely painful for a lot of people, that’s enabled us to conserve funds, enabled us to really minimise the redundancies we’re having to make moving forward. We’ve just got to be so thankful that in Australia we’re getting sport back, we’re getting crowds back and that’s really my focus now.”The speed at which Hockley’s appointment arrived, after Roberts’ exit was not formalised until late on Monday night, has left many areas unaddressed, such as who will take the reins of the T20 World Cup itself, and whether he will be a contender for the longer-term role – an unlikely possibility though there is every chance Hockley will finish up as a CA executive. What Hockley can promise, as a seasoned stager of major events, is a strong degree of skills in getting a show on the road. He was, after all, the runner of the most recent show.”One thing I know having worked on the World Cups, you can’t deliver a major event on your own. It requires all the states and territories, the venues, the broadcasters, the partners, everyone all coming together, and together one plus one equals more than two,” he said. “I see this immediate time now as making the most of what we’ve got. We owe that to the fans, we owe that massively to those people who we had to stand down yesterday.”

Sam Curran bags three, but Grant Stewart and Harry Podmore stand firm for Kent

Grant Stewart made 58 and Harry Podmore scored a fine 42-ball 47 from No. 8 as the pair added 73 for the seventh wicket and Kent reached a determined 295 for 8 after being put in by Surrey on the opening day of their Bob Willis Trophy fixture at the Kia Oval.Sam Curran returned from England Test duty to take 3 for 65 for Surrey but it was the lower-order partnership between Podmore and Stewart that ultimately edged the day Kent’s way after a battling performance. There were also half-century stands for the second and fifth wickets, respectively by Daniel Bell-Drummond and Jack Leaning and then by Marcus O’Riordan and Darren Stevens, to frustrate Surrey’s attack. At 99 for 4 in mid-afternoon, however, it looked like it would be Surrey’s day after Bell-Drummond fell for a fighting 111-ball 45 – leg-before to Adam Finch – and Ollie Robinson was also pinned in front for 17 by Curran. But O’Riordan, a contemporary of England’s new batting star Zak Crawley when they were both at Tonbridge School, reached 30 from 65 balls while veteran allrounder Stevens made 24, before edging Rikki Clarke to Ben Foakes behind the stumps, as the pair led a counter-attack with a stand of 55 in 13 overs. And then, after O’Riordan had thin-edged Curran to Foakes in the second over after tea, pushing at one angled across him from the left-arm seamer, Podmore arrived to play an excellent knock that included six fours and a big six sweetly struck into the new Peter May Stand construction site off Amar Virdi.Stewart also drove offspinner Virdi for a straight six and hit five fours in his 103-ball innings, before being eighth out in the day’s 87th over when he went down the pitch to Virdi, missed an attempted lofted drive and was bowled leg stump. The 22-year-old O’Riordan, just nine days older than Crawley, impressed in what is just his fifth first-class game. He has been getting his Kent chance in this abbreviated summer largely because of the absences of Crawley and other senior players, and despite his offspin being reportedly his strongest cricketing suit he has looked very comfortable taking various top-order batting roles in the past month. In his fourth Willis Trophy appearance, O’Riordan came in at 99 for 3 and resisted gamely, hitting five fours before departing at 170 for 6. The efforts of Podmore, Stewart and Matt Milnes, who finished on 22 not out after a handy 49-run stand with Stewart, then ensured that Kent were marginally the happier at stumps.Earlier Kent had fought hard to get to 56 for 1 by lunch, with Bell-Drummond joined by Leaning in a partnership of 58 in 25 overs after Jordan Cox had gone in the ninth over, leg-before to a Matt Dunn yorker.Leaning eventually went for 21, chipping Curran to mid on off a leading edge in the sixth over after lunch, and just before his dismissal by Finch, acting captain Bell-Drummond was hit on the shoulder by the impressive 20-year-old paceman, making his second Surrey appearance on loan from Worcestershire.Finch, though, then had to wait until deep into the final session to get his second scalp, that of Podmore who carved to backward point.Wicketkeeper Foakes, like Curran, was playing his first BWT game after being released from England’s bio-secure Test bubble but Surrey were without fast bowler Morne Morkel, who picked up a niggle in the defeat against Hampshire at Arundel last week.Kent, without Joe Denly and Sam Billings – who have joined England’s white-ball squad – and Heino Kuhn, who is on paternity leave, have given a first-class debut to 20-year-old paceman Nathan Gilchrist, signed from Somerset earlier this summer, and who finished on 1 not out.
