Derby hit gold on incredible gem who’s now worth more than the entire squad

Derby County will enter the Championship next season with a number of products from their academy present in and around the first-team, with the Rams youth set-up hailed as being a fertile place for stars to develop, before shining when making the leap up into the senior mix.

Eiran Cashin, unless he is snapped up between now and the opening day, is the most notable face who has managed to make a first-team spot his own since graduating from the Academy structure, whilst the likes of Max Bird and Jason Knight have got bumper moves away from Pride Park after cutting their teeth in Derbyshire.

Derby County defenderEiran Cashin.

Yet, even with plenty of examples of Derby's patience paying off with homegrown stars, there are other examples where the Rams have prematurely let a gem go who has then gone on to excel away from the Championship club.

That doesn't mean Derby won't still win in the long-term, however, with a former Academy starlet in Liam Delap having just completed a bumper move, which could see Paul Warne and Co gain some significant money to put towards their second-tier transfer kitty.

Liam Delap's start at Derby

Delap moving onto Ipswich could see Derby win a sweet cash bonus, with the Championship outfit cleverly inserting a sell-on clause when they allowed the 21-year-old to move on in 2019, in case something like this occurred down the line.

Delap spent ten years in and around the youth set-up at the Rams before moving to Manchester City, with the wide-eyed sensation benefitting from his early Pride Park education, which might well have helped him hone in on his vicious goalscoring skills that have been seen playing youth football for City.

The 6 foot 1 forward would go on to only make eight appearances for Derby U18s, scoring just once from those appearances, before being snapped by the reigning Premier League champions.

Warne's side never unfortunately got to witness Delap at his prolific best, therefore, with there being a theoretical world where the highly rated new Ipswich signing would have gone on to make many a senior appearance at Pride Park, instead of walking away from his boyhood club so early into his fledging career.

Instead, he turned into a notoriously ice-cold finisher of chances playing in the Premier League 2 and beyond for Pep Guardiola's titans, which has led him to making such an expensive switch to Suffolk.

How Delap developed at Man City

Man City didn't just take a risky gamble on Delap coming good, however, with the deadly youngster showing off his goalscoring prowess with the England U16s when still on the books at Derby.

The promising attacker would bag six goals from ten games on the International stage in this age bracket, before going on to be capped all the way up to the U21s, with the goals never drying up.

The ridiculous goal above is just one of many sublime strikes Delap has managed to put away playing for City, with a ridiculous 11 strikes and seven assists managed from 18 U18 appearances after he first waved Derby goodbye.

That fast-tracked the 21-year-old up to the U21 fold, where he became even more of a calm finisher under pressure, with a staggering 35 goals from just 36 games, as his former employers watched on in awe of what their youth player was now doing to defences regularly in the Premier League 2 and other competitions.

This composure in front of goal even saw Guardiola take notice and label Delap as an "incredible" finisher, with the Spaniard also allowing the 21-year-old to net a senior strike at the Etihad Stadium, by scoring against AFC Bournemouth in the EFL Cup in 2020.

Delap's value in 2024

Loan spells down in the Championship away from the luxuries of the Premier League giants have also seen him sharpen his skills in finding the back of net further, with eight strikes managed last season for Hull City as Ipswich now gain the services of the highly rated centre-forward for a reported fee of £20m.

Derby won't be mega-rich off the back of this development, but gaining a slim fraction of that £20m will still go a long way you imagine, especially when you consider that amount is more than what the entire Derby squad is currently worth, according to Transfermarkt.

Derby's entire squad, as per Transfermarkt's latest valuation, is currently worth around £12.6m, which is some way off Delap.

Ipswich will hope they aren't paying way over the odds for their new 6 foot 1 star, considering Man City managed to win his services from Derby for just £1m back in 2019.

Delap would even become Derby's record departure with that £20m price tag now next to his head, when glancing at the table above, with Warne and Co hopeful that some of this cash can go towards boosting and strengthening their squad ahead of their return to the Championship.

The Championship can be an unforgiving division, and with some additions already entering into the building bolstering the ranks, this new added injection of cash could go some way in further adding strength in depth.

It remains to be seen whether or not Delap becomes a success at Ipswich, after being protected by the youth pitches at City for some time.

But, Derby won't really be paying attention to that, as they focus on survival as a minimum this season to come.

Derby could soon move on promotion hero who earns more than Mendez-Laing

As Derby County continue to strengthen with incomings, a number of players could now be allowed to head for the exit door.

Everton register interest in signing £150,000-per-week Onana replacement

As Amadou Onana's move to Aston Villa looks almost certain at this point, Everton have set their sights on a midfielder to take the Belgian's place in Sean Dyche's side next season.

Onana replacements are the Toffees' top priority

The big problem for the higher ups at Goodison Park is how they are going to go about replacing the departing Onana. Whilst the Belgian's reported £50million fee will go someway towards funding new signings in the middle of the park, there is still the matter of who Everton choose as the 22-year-old's successor.

Wilfred Ndidi long looked destined to be the future of Everton's midfield with the Nigerian failing to negotiate a new deal with former club Leicester City. Despite departing the King Power Stadium at the end of last month, a breakthrough in talks has seen the 26-year-old return to the club and commit his future to the Foxes.

With Ndidi out of the picture, one name that has recently done the rounds on Merseyside is Lesley Ugochukwu. A report in the French press has suggested that Everton are one of many potential suitors for the Chelsea midfielder who looks set to depart Stamford Bridge on loan this summer.

Joining the Chelsea youngster on the Toffees' list of targets is former Leeds United man Weston McKennie. The USA international currently plies his trade at Juventus, however is said to be free to leave the Serie A outfit this summer.

With Everton still on the lookout for the player to fill Onana's shoes at Goodison Park, the Toffees are now thought to have their eyes on another man with previous links to Elland Road.

Toffees target out of favour Man City star

As first reported by Football Insider's Wayne Veysey, Everton have registered their interest in signing Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips. The outlet claims that the Premier League champions are keen to offload the 28-year-old this summer after struggling during his time at the Etihad Stadium.

The former England international first arrived in blue half of Manchester in a £42million move from boyhood club Leeds in the summer of 2022, signing a six-year-deal currently worth a reported £150,000 per week.

Whilst Phillips has only managed to make 31 appearances during his two years with Man City, the midfielder arrived at the club with high expectations after playing a key role in Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds side – City's Director of Football Txiki Begiristain spoke highly of Phillips upon his announcement.

“His reading of the game, alongside his passing ability, energy and drive make him a formidable talent and he is a player who has a fantastic will to win. We feel he will be a superb addition to our squad and that he will complement our game perfectly."

Whilst things did not work out for Phillips at Man City, there is no doubt that there is still time for the player to rediscover his previous form and Everton could be just the place for him to do it.

Shakib Al Hasan's 4 for 8 leads Bangladesh to comfortable win in first ODI against West Indies

Debutant Hasan Mahmud took 3 for 28, as West Indies’ total of 122 would never be sufficient

Shakib Al Hasan, who was serving a one-year ban for not reporting a corrupt approach from 2019, had a fruitful return to international cricket as his 4 for 8 helped Bangladesh beat an inexperienced West Indies by six wickets in the first ODI in Mirpur. The win gave Bangladesh a 1-0 lead in the three-match series and also earned them their first points in the World Cup Super League. On paper, it would appear to be a one-sided win for Bangladesh, but West Indies – who were fielding six debutants – had some positives to take from the game despite being bowled out for 122. Debutant Kyle Mayers, who struck 40, showed promise on a spin-friendly surface while left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein – also playing his first ODI – spun a web around the Bangladesh top order with his variations to finish with 3 for 26. However, a target of 123 was simply too low for West Indies to keep sustaining the pressure, as Bangladesh won with 16 overs to spare.Conditions were overcast all day in Mirpur, and captain Tamim Iqbal asked West Indies to bat first. It was a decision that gave them early success as Mustafizur Rahman bagged 2 for 20, using his inswinger to trap opener Sunil Ambris lbw in the second over. After a brief rain delay, Rahman struck again to dismiss Joshua da Silva for 9 when the batsman edged a drive to Liton Das at gully, who took an acrobatic catch.Related

Shakib's 'hunger and desire' fetches immediate success

Iqbal, donning the captain’s hat in a full-time capacity for the first time, then introduced Shakib, who struck almost instantly. Andre McCarthy looked to absorb the pressure for West Indies but after his 34-ball stay of 12, swept down the wrong line and had his off stump knocked back. That was Shakib’s 150th wicket at home, and he would swiftly add two more when he had Jason Mohammed (17) stumped and Nkrumah Bonner trapped lbw for a four-ball duck.At that stage, West Indies were 56 for 5, but a 59-run stand between Mayers and Rovman Powell took them past three-figures. After seeing off the first spell from Shakib and offspinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz, they pounced on pacers Rubel Hossain and Rahman when the duo returned for their second spells. The short balls were pulled or cut while the overpitched ones were drilled through cover, but just as it was looking dangerous, the half-century partnership was broken.Bangladesh’s own debutant, 21-year-old pacer Hasan Mahmud, grabbed 3 for 28 and got the breakthrough. After bowling a quick first spell with no reward, he got a length ball in his second to zip off the surface and beat Powell for pace. That got Powell’s edge and found Mushfiqur Rahim’s gloves. The next ball, Mahmud came around the wicket and hit the back leg of left-hander Raymon Reifer to get his second wicket, this time lbw. He was lucky, however, with ball-tracker showing that the delivery would have gone over the stumps. Reifer, though, could not ask for the TV umpire to look at it since West Indies had already burned both reviews. That left Mayers with the lower order to follow, but he was dismissed by Miraz from around the wicket, as the latter got the ball to turn away. Mayers’ attempted drive took the outside edge only to find Das lurking at first slip. At that point, West Indies were 121 for 8, and Das was in the action again when Hosein edged Mahmud to the slip cordon.Thereafter, Shakib took his fourth wicket and West Indies’ last, when he got an arm ball to go through Alzarri Joseph’s defense, bowling West Indies out for 122 in the 33rd over. Shakib’s figures of 4 for 8 were the best by a Bangladesh bowler against West Indies, while the visitors’ total was their second-lowest against their hosts.Liton Das and Tamim Iqbal began Bangladesh’s chase in a hurry, but fell soon after•AFP via Getty Images

The way Iqbal and Das began the chase, the match seemed destined for a quick finish. Chemar Holder erred in his line and was punished early, conceding 26 runs in his first three overs. It allowed Bangladesh to score at over five an over for the first seven, but when Joseph began operating in partnership with Hosein later on, run-scoring became difficult.Joseph bowled typical Test-match lines on a surface that showed some sideways movement and induced plenty of false shots from the openers, while Hosein got the ball to turn both ways to keep the batsmen guessing. Between overs seven and 12, Bangladesh scored only four runs, and the way Joseph and Hosein plugged the run-flow earned West Indies a breakthrough soon after.Das was the first to go, out for an uncharacteristic 38-ball 14. He tried to defend a ball from Hosein that landed on middle stump at a good length, but the delivery turned away from his bat and crashed into off stump. Bangladesh’s No. 3 Najmul Hossain Shanto then looked off-colour against Hosein, unable to guess which way the ball would turn. It led to his downfall as he played at a length ball with hard hands and the ball popped in the air for midwicket to swallow.Shakib then joined Iqbal, and together they batted conservatively as West Indies captain Mohammed introduced his own offbreaks since the surface was offering something to the spinners. Mohammed dismissed Iqbal in his fourth over when he drew the batsman forward with a full ball that turned away, only for him to be stumped for 44. Rahim and Shakib then dealt in ones and twos as Bangladesh crossed 100 in the 27th over. Hosein, however, had one last over to impress, which he did by forcing a false shot from Shakib on 19, who missed a cut off a ball aimed at the stumps.Mahmudullah and Rahim then saw off the chase with an unbeaten stand of 20, with the former hitting a boundary off a free hit in the 34th over to take Bangladesh across the line. However, it seemed that had West Indies scored another fifty runs, the chase would have been mighty tricky.”Obviously playing after 16-17 months is not easy. But [I’m] happy the way I performed,” Player of the Match Shakib said at the innings break. “The thing is we haven’t played for ten months, so everybody is anxious and keen to play matches. Since it was the first match, everyone was nervous yet excited to get on the field.”As a bowler, wanted to keep it simple and let the ball and the wicket do the work. There are quite a few young fast bowlers coming through the systems. I was playing the domestic T20 tournament where a lot of quicks were bowling with their heart out. I knew what Hasan [Mahmud] is capable of since we played in the same team. He expressed himself.””No complaints, we bowled extremely well,” Iqbal said after the match. “You couldn’t play aggressively even if you wanted to. The conditions made the wicket difficult. You have to be patient, and we weren’t chasing a big total, so whoever batted, batted sensibly.”

Carlos Brathwaite cautions CPL on implementing Power Surge until after T20 World Cup

The allrounder has been pleased with his bowling in the BBL but has been disappointed by his lack of runs

West Indies and Sydney Sixers allrounder Carlos Brathwaite has cautioned against the Caribbean Premier League introducing the Power Surge into this year’s tournament for fear it might jeopardise players preparation for the T20 World Cup in India.Speaking ahead of the BBL final at the SCG on Saturday, Brathwaite has liked the innovation that was introduced in the BBL this season as part of three new rule changes.Leagues around the world are looking at the success of the Power Surge in the BBL with a view to possibly introducing it elsewhere.Whilst Brathwaite is not against the Surge coming into the CPL altogether, he said the timing of such a move was important as it would not be ideal for middle-order batsmen ahead of the T20 World Cup in India where there will be no Power Surge in play.”It’s a nice innovation for the tournament,” Brathwaite said. “However, with the World Cup being around the corner, it also can give a false pretence of where a guy is at. If he gets a massive spark in the Surge and then you see him with a strike-rate of 170, 180, 200.Related

Starc won't play in BBL final despite being fit for selection

“If you’re going to the World Cup and there’s no Surge in the World Cup then all of a sudden it can be a bit of a false dawn. So, I don’t know if this year in the lead up to a World Cup would be the best for it. I think it’s something that the Big Bash will keep because they’ve been gaining rave reviews from pundits, journalists, and players. So, in a few years, if it’s the thing, yeah, why not. I just think it’s a matter of timing.”Brathwaite has bowled four Power Surge overs across the tournament picking up two wickets at an economy rate of 12.00. Of the 23 bowlers in the BBL who have bowled four or more overs in the Surge, he is ranked 19th for economy rate in the Surge overs.”The challenge is a big one for sure,” Brathwaite said. “It’s about clarity. You’re expected to get met in the Surge. Teams target around 15 runs per over in the Surge overs, so if you can restrict teams to 7, 8, 10 runs, I guess you’re winning.”I guess on reflection, one thing I’d like to have done is to have picked up a few more wickets. I’ve gone quite defensive, around the wicket, into the heels and just trying to mix it from there, whereas you watch other guys in the tournament go a bit more attacking and basically have the same fields that they would have in the first Powerplay and try to break the back of the batting because players are taking a lot more risk in the Surge as well. So on personal reflection that’s one thing I could potentially have done a bit better.”Surge numbers aside, Brathwaite has been an outstanding contributor with the ball for the Sixers throughout the tournament. He has taken 16 wickets at an economy rate of 7.84. Of the 17 bowlers in the BBL who have taken 15 wickets or more, only six have a better economy rate.Success with the bat has been harder to find: ‘I forgot my runs in Barbados apparently’•Getty Images and Cricket Australia

“I think the pitches probably suit my bowling a lot more than most places around the world,” Brathwaite said. “I’m able to run in and hit good lengths. Kind of that four-day length. For me personally, one of my cues is hitting the top of off stump. From place to place that I go I would always be talking to one of the local players just to get an idea of what length hits the top of off stump.”My powerplay bowling probably hasn’t been the best in the first four, but that being said, coming back in the Surge or at the death, or coming in those middle overs with five men out and trying to control the run-rate, I think I’ve been executing quite well and keeping things quite simple and not thinking too much or getting funky with my fields, just being really clear and executing as well as I possibly can.”Brathwaite has struggled with the bat though scoring just 45 runs in 10 innings with a highest score of 21, but remains hopeful he can deliver if needed in Saturday’s final.”I forgot my runs in Barbados apparently,” Brathwaite said. “So hopefully if needed with the bat, I can come to the forefront as I haven’t done for the season. So that has been a bit disappointing. But overall, I do think I’ve helped the team with the ball massively, in the field, and off the field gelled quite well as well. All positives bar the bat.”He is excited to play again at the SCG for the first time this season, a venue where he made his highest Test score. The ground will have a 75 percent capacity for the BBL final meaning more than 28,000 will be allowed to attend.”I’m looking forward to playing at the SCG,” Brathwaite said. “I probably played one of my best Test knocks there. Having been deprived of that and now being able to represent the team in front of our fans at the SCG it may be a bit more of an occasion than just a Grand Final.”So once we control our emotions and continue to execute, the other guys have played enough cricket at the SCG to know and understand and assess the conditions quickly and then implement the game plan that has worked over the last few years if the conditions are the same.”

He’s better than Calvert-Lewin: Everton bid for £25m "goal machine"

Sean Dyche has always loved a strong, reliable backline, and has now completed an evolution of sorts following Jake O'Brien's £16.5m transfer from Lyon.

Effectively replacing Ben Godfrey, who has moved to Atalanta in a £10m deal, the Toffees are repackaging their defence, bolstering the star partnership of Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski with a "revelation in defence", according to journalist Zach Lowy.

Lyon defender Jake O'Brien

Now, the full focus must be fixed on centre-forward, for the Goodison Park side need some added impetus up top and Dominic Calvert-Lewin's future at the club is up in the air, with Farhad Moshiri and Co 'braced' for late-window bids, according to Football Insider.

Everton transfer news

According to Sky Italia's Marco Demicheli – relayed by Radio Rossonera – Everton have joined West Ham United in fighting to sign AS Roma striker Tammy Abraham, with both clubs said to have lodged a bid for his services.

Formerly of Chelsea, Abraham spent the lion's share of last season consigned to the injury room, and with the Serie A side searching for a new No. 9 this summer, it might be time for a change.

Despite his recent woes, the 26-year-old has enjoyed a prolific and trophy-laden career, thus transfer-listed for about €30m (£25m).

Why Everton want Tammy Abraham

Supporters have observed their damaging ownership situation with all the impotence of someone watching their garden get ravaged in a storm, but yet the belief and conviction of Dyche, his squad and Everton's fanbase remains strong.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

Last season, despite an eight-point deduction in the Premier League, Everton finished comfortably in 15th place. Despite this and the lack of funds, moves have been made to shore up the Merseysiders' first team and perhaps step into the top half of the division.

Calvert-Lewin's resurgence played its part but the 27-year-old still only scored seven Premier League goals, meaning that he has now gone three successive campaigns without hitting the double-figure mark.

Regardless, he went from strength to strength in the later phase after reviving his athleticism somewhat, scoring four goals and supplying one assist across his final six starts and leading The Athletic's Patrick Boyland to praise him for looking "like the DCL of old".

But with Newcastle United displaying strong interest in the 6 foot 2 talisman, attention is understandably being turned toward Abraham, with Calvert-Lewin's countryman possibly even proving to be an upgrade for Dyche and his Everton frontline.

An upgrade on Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Abraham might have been beset with a long-term injury last year but he's managed to avoid regular setbacks on the fitness front throughout his career and could prove to be an upgrade on Calvert-Lewin in that regard.

AS Roma striker Tammy Abraham.

Once hailed as a "goal machine" by former coach Stephen Elliott, the £93k-per-week talent signed for the Italian side from Chelsea for about £34m in 2021, notching 48 goal contributions across 107 matches.

Previously, he'd posted 21 goals and four assists across 56 fixtures for Chelsea across 2019-2021, indeed winning the Champions League and offering a worthy focal point in attack.

By comparing Abraham's best Premier League campaign with Calvert-Lewin's, we can get a relatively accurate gauge of why the Roma striker might prove to be a masterful signing for the Blues.

What's actually striking when the data is collated is that the respective forwards are actually quite similar, both capable of enjoying clinical seasons with similar output in regard to shooting regularity, creative support and ball progression.

Calvert-Lewin is better in the duel but this is largely down to his dominant aerial ability. All told, Abraham would be able to perform a similar role having boasted greater goalscoring success over the past few years.

During his first year in Italy, for example, Abraham was remarkable under Jose Mourinho's wing. Across all competitions during the Conference League-winning season, he plundered a whopping haul of 27 goals and five assists across 53 matches in all competitions.

The dynamic attacker also arguably offers a greater technical capacity than that of the Goodison Park centre-forward, with his deft dribbling something that could continue the development of Dyche's attacking ranks.

And since his days at Stamford Bridge, the rangy ace has fostered a new level of playmaking ability too, averaging one key pass per game across his first two Serie A campaigns with Roma, something he wasn't able to replicate last year given his injury absence, starting just twice at the end of the year.

Ultimately, Everton will need to weigh up their options. Of course, losing a stalwart like Calvert-Lewin is not the most desirable option in the world, but he is entering the final year of his £100k-per-week deal and could fetch a hefty fee if sold within the next month.

In Abraham, Dyche would land a replacement both fitting and with the faculty for goals that could see him surpass his No. 9 predecessor's strike rate on Merseyside.

Roma skipper Lorenzo Pellegrini once said that the former Aston Villa and Swansea City loanee could become "one of the best in the world", such is his rounded attacking quality.

At Everton, he would find an interesting platform to complete a resurgence after a period of inactivity, and Dyche must get the deal done – potentially making a profit on the possibly departing Calvert-Lewin too.
