BCCI to conduct remainder of IPL 2021 in September-October in UAE

Board to also “seek an extension” from ICC “to take an appropriate call” on hosting the men’s T20 World Cup

Midway into the IPL 2021, the tournament was postponed indefinitely, earlier this month•BCCI

The remainder of the 2021 IPL season will be held in September-October in the UAE. The decision was taken by the BCCI at a special general body meeting held virtually on Saturday. The BCCI also decided to “seek an extension” from the ICC “to take an appropriate call” on hosting the men’s T20 World Cup, originally scheduled in India between mid-October and November 14.ESPNcricinfo has learned that the BCCI has earmarked the start date of the IPL tentatively for September 20, after they had narrowed down on a window between September 18 and October 12 in internal meetings recently. In a media release issued on Saturday, the BCCI said the decision to shift the IPL, which was suspended early May at the halfway stage, to the UAE was owing to the “monsoon season in India” which usually stretches between June and early October.”The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday announced to complete the remaining matches of VIVO Indian Premier League 2021 season in the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E) considering the monsoon season in India in the months of September-October this year,” the BCCI said.Related

After IPL postponement, UAE becomes contender for T20 WC

There are several hurdles the BCCI faces in the limited window for the remainder of the IPL. Firstly, India’s five-match Test series in England is scheduled to end on September 14 in Manchester. Within a week after that, England are scheduled to travel to Bangladesh followed by Pakistan for white-ball series that are expected to go on till mid-October. More than a dozen of England’s top white-ball players feature in the IPL which will leave many franchises anxious about their unavailability. The other key challenge is the CPL, which reiterated on Friday while announcing the players’ draft that the 2021 edition will be held between August 28 and September 19. A lot of the top Caribbean players and many other big-name overseas players and coaching staff are involved in the CPL.While the BCCI has opened a dialogue with the CPL to try and convince them to tweak their schedule, which could then allow players to move between the bubbles in St Kitts (the CPL venue) and the UAE quickly, it will not be an easy task. Advancing the CPL is hardly an option because West Indies’ home season ends on August 24, only four days before the CPL starts, and includes series against South Africa, Australia and Pakistan. The BCCI remains confident that in case the CPL can end even a few days earlier than the current end date of September 19, it can wrap up the IPL in time before the main leg of the T20 World Cup.At the time the IPL was suspended, there were still 31 matches, including the four playoffs, left to be played. With India continuing to be in the middle of a second wave of Covid-19, there were strong doubts about India hosting the second half of the IPL. Upon returning to Australia, Hussey said that he had doubts even about the T20 World Cup being held in India. This will be the second successive year the UAE will be hosting the IPL. In 2020 the BCCI had conducted the entire tournament split between Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. Those three venues are likely to play hosts once again after the BCCI finalises the dates for the IPL, which remains its primary challenge now that it has announced the September-October window.Time running out for decision on T20 World Cup
The ICC, too, has been clear that the window for the T20 World Cup, which is likely to be held between October 16-20 and November 14, cannot be changed. The ICC would also want the BCCI to take a call on whether the 16-team T20 World Cup, already postponed once last year, can be hosted in India or should it also be moved to the UAE, which was nominated as the back-up venue. The BCCI said the SGM had “authorised the Office Bearers to seek an extension of time from the ICC to take an appropriate call” on hosting the T20 World Cup. The issue is one of the key items on the agenda of the ICC Board meet, scheduled for June 1, which BCCI president Sourav Ganguly is expected to attend.

Newcastle reportedly planning to make offer to free agent worth almost £30m

Newcastle United are expected to make an offer for an "extraordinary" free agent, but will need to act quickly as he is also wanted by another Premier League club, according to a fresh transfer update.

Newcastle contract & transfer news

The Magpies' summer transfer business is done and dusted, in what was a relatively low-key period in the market for them, but there are still contract and transfer rumours doing the rounds. The future of Anthony Gordon was a major talking point during the summer, with a move to boyhood club Liverpool mooted a number of times, but the winger ended up staying put at St James' Park. Now, it is claimed that the 23-year-old could sign a new deal at Newcastle, acting as a major boost for Eddie Howe.

In terms of potential new signings, only free agents are now available for the Magpies, with Yusuf Yazici reportedly a target, having left Lille upon the conclusion of last season. Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are also thought to be in the mix for the 27-year-old.

There is another free agent who has emerged as an exciting option for Newcastle, too, as they battle with one of the clubs mentioned above for his signature.

Newcastle plan offer for "extraordinary" midfielder

According to a new update from Le Figaro [via Sport Witness], Newcastle could soon table an offer for Adrien Rabiot, who is currently a free agent after his departure from Juventus at the end of last season. United are in the same position, however, seeing the Frenchman as an excellent option to replace Casemiro, as the two Premier League clubs are said to "need to hurry" to get a deal done.

Adrien Rabiot for France.

Rabiot could be a fantastic addition to Newcastle's midfield, considering his pedigree as a player throughout his career, during which time he has won seven league titles – six for Paris Saint-Germain and one with Juve. Not only that, but the 29-year-old has won 48 caps for a formidable France team, proving to be a key figure in the middle of the park, while David Trezeguet has lauded him in the past.

With Newcastle supporters not overly happy about a lack of stellar signings during the summer transfer window, the £29.5m-valued Rabiot could add so much class and experience to Howe's midfield all without splashing a penny, possessing quality in possession and a strong work ethic off the ball.

Last season, the France international registered eight goal contributions (five goals and three assists) in Serie A, but he also averaged 1.9 tackles per game, not to mention starting five matches for his country at Euro 2024 earlier this summer.

Newcastle sold a defender for £90k, now he has more career goals than Isak

ByRoss Kilvington Sep 8, 2024

Signing Rabiot should be considered a no-brainer for Newcastle, even though he would likely demand big wages, with the free element of the fee making it less of an issue.

Ryan Patel, Jamie Smith make bowlers question their lifestyle choices in Guildford run-riot

A total of 548 runs scored in 52 overs as rain triggers 30-over mayhem

Ryan Patel made a remarkable century for Surrey at Guildford•Getty Images

Surrey 311 for 8 (Patel 131, Smith 54) beat Nottinghamshire 266 for 7 (Slater 69, Evison 54) by 33 runs (DLS method)There’s a generally held view that the life of a modern sportsperson is a glamorous affair full of travel and adulation. And it’s true, the good days can be pretty damn good. But not if you’re a bowler confronted with Guildford. This is a desperately tough ground on which to bowl. The flat pitch is complemented by short boundaries and an outfield that slopes a little from the square meaning the ball picks up pace as it approaches the rope. Really, it’s the sort of place to make a bowler wish they had persuaded a career in sewage treatment instead of sport. It is brutal. The bare facts of this match are this: in 52 overs (following an early stoppage for rain), 548 runs were scored between these two sides. At one stage, as sixes rained down onto Woodbridge Road despite the high fencing designed to avoid such mishaps, you feared for the safety of pedestrians and motorists. One motorcyclist will, thankfully, arrive home this evening having no idea that a six from Rikki Clarke missed him by an inch. Some will suggest that such surfaces, offering little balance between bat and ball, are not especially good for the game. And it is true that an attempt from a pensioner to throw a ball back into the ground – it took him four efforts – was one of the more competitive moments of the afternoon. The fence really did put up a terrific fight. But for anyone who wasn’t a bowler – or especially sympathetic to bowlers – it provided rich entertainment for a crowd which included former Prime Minster, Sir John Major, lots of families on summer holiday and a stag party dressed as flamingos. That Surrey prevailed was largely due to two career-best innings from Ryan Patel and Jamie Smith. It’s worth reiterating that Surrey have lost 11 players to the Hundred and Nottinghamshire nine, so players like this are winning opportunities which might otherwise be denied them. Though whether any bowler feels this was an opportunity is debatable.Surrey had reached 28 for 1 after eight overs before rain interrupted their innings. But, after a prolonged delay, they resumed in such style that they plundered 282 in the next 22 overs. Two hundred and eighty two! Their innings included 23 sixes and, not only the fastest List A century from a Surrey player since 2007, but what is believed to be the quickest List A half-century ever made in England (an equally quick one was made in Wales by Somerset’s Graham Rose).Related

The century, reached in just 59 balls, was scored by Patel. It was an innings that improved his List A career-best by 90 and tripled the number of sixes he had hit across formats from five to 15. He later took an outstanding catch – running in and diving forward from the cover boundary – to account for Haseeb Hameed. He had, in short, a wonderful day.Patel actually started relatively cautiously. With Surrey having lost an early wicket – Hashim Amla walked after gloving one down the legside – he took 27 deliveries to make his first 16 runs. But shortly after play resumed, Patel seemed to be a man reborn. He thrashed 115 from the final 43 balls of his innings, including 25 from a Matthew Montgomery over which included a six from each of the first three balls. But the half-century from Jamie Smith was, if anything, even more eye-catching. It took only 16 deliveries (with two fours and six sixes) and contained several strikes that would have cleared the boundary on any ground. At one stage he added 50 in just 14 balls with Nico Reifer; Reifer contributed one scoring stroke.Surrey actually scored 311. But the DLS algorithm reduced Nottinghamshire’s target to 300. Understandably, that caused some consternation around the ground, but it seems the reasoning was that Surrey had benefited from eight powerplay overs and Notts had only six.Notts’ reply started brightly. Sol Budinger and Ben Slater added 71 for the first wicket in just 5.5 overs, with Slater going on to make a fine half-century, from 38 balls, and Joey Evison later made one from 37.Given the deluge of runs, some of the bowling is worthy of particular praise. Matt Dunn, for example, delivered nine dot-balls in succession at one stage – an incredible achievement amid the carnage all around – while Clarke also ratcheted up the pressure with a masterful display of controlled variations. Connor McKerr and Dan Moriarty held their heads in a way the Notts bowlers struggled to match. In their way, these Surrey performances contributed just as much to Surrey’s victory as Smith and Patel’s batting.Spare a thought for Peter Trego. Not only was he one of the few to miss out on this feast – he received what might have been the delivery of the day and nicked off for a second-ball duck – but he put down a chance in front of the beer tent. It did not go unnoticed. It’s worth noting the size of the crowd, too. Despite the rain, just over 3,000 spectators – or ‘haters’ as they might be called by some – stayed to watch this run-fest. At Taunton and Chelmsford, Scarborough and Bristol, this competition is continuing to win encouraging support. Might that show that the Hundred and the county game can co-exist? It certainly could be interpreted that way. Or maybe it just shows there’s a market for cricket scheduled where and when people can see it. Twenty overs, 50 or 30 overs a side; we have a great game. Unless, of course, you’re a bowler.

Tottenham really considering offer for "intelligent" £21m-rated England ace

Tottenham Hotspur are seriously considering the prospect of signing an England international for manager Ange Postecoglou, with the Australian somewhat under fire right now after a tepid start to the season.

Spurs escape Coventry City upset with dramatic 2-1 win

The Lilywhites were just minutes away from what would’ve been a calamitous result in the EFL Cup on Wednesday evening.

What Postecoglou has secretly told his Tottenham squad after Arsenal defeat

The Australian has come under-fire since Spurs’ North London derby loss.

An uninspiring display at Championship side Coventry City in the EFL Cup nearly resulted in Postecoglou’s side squandering a potential cup run right at the very beginning of the season, and it took two dramatic last-gasp strikes to ensure their place in the next round.

Brandon Thomas-Asante’s opening goal for Coventry just past the hour mark had Tottenham supporters in panic mode, but substitutes Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson were on hand to spare Postecoglou’s blushes.

Spence’s strike in the 88th minute and Johnson’s winner in added time kept Spurs’ hopes of winning the competition very much alive, though Postecoglou came under fire afterwards considering the lacklustre display from his team.

Speaking to the media after Tottenham’s smash and grab win, Postecoglou defended his players and praised Coventry for their performance.

“Yeah, I don’t know, flat performance is a bit harsh. I thought I was a typical cup game,” said Postecoglou after Spurs’ 2-1 win at Coventry.

“I thought Coventry were really good. They put some real energy into the game, and we couldn’t really get a grip on it. So we had to hang in there. We had to work really, really hard just to stay in the game and obviously going a goal behind makes it even more challenging. But like you said at the end there we showed some real spirit and character, which is probably what’s been missing in the first four games. We’ve had the performance, but we haven’t had that relentlessness to to get a result. You sense that in the last 10 minutes, we got real belief out of that, and hopefully that’s a good sign moving forward.”

Tottenham are also fresh off the back of two consecutive Premier League defeats, but Postecoglou has told his Spurs squad to remain calm and keep up their performance, ahead of a tough second campaign in charge for the tactician.

Tottenham seriously considering Angel Gomes move

As the pressure mounts on Postecoglou, club transfer chiefs are at work on potential signings to strengthen the squad as 2025 looms.

Lille midfielder and ex-Man United starlet Angel Gomes, who recently earned his first international caps for England, is apparently turning heads in north London.

According to GiveMeSport, Tottenham are seriously considering a move for Gomes while “offering him a route back to his homeland”, which would be a very low-cost deal with the 24-year-old’s contract expiring next summer.

While he is valued at around £21 million by Transfermarkt, Spurs could bypass a fee entirely next summer, or sign him for a very cheap fee in January.

Gomes has impressed for Lille since joining them in 2021, becoming a real mainstay and key player on their team sheet. The attacking midfielder chalked up eight assists in Ligue 1 alone last season, and he could be a sound alternative to James Maddison in the middle.

“Angel is maybe the most intelligent player I have in my team. He understands faster than the others everything about the game; he loves the game. He loves to learn and he is a player with big skills, big technique,” said ex-Lille boss Paulo Fonseca.

“He is a player who under pressure it is not easy to steal the ball off him and who discovers the space so easily. He is young, he has a big talent. I believe with the right coach, with the right project, with the right game for him, he can have the possibility to have a big step in his career.”

TalkSPORT pundit says Leeds could get their next Archie Gray for just £5m

One TalkSPORT pundit believes Leeds can find their next Archie Gray by spending just £5 million on a player they have recently been linked with, according to a new report.

The Yorkshire side saw their two-game winning run end on Tuesday evening, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Norwich City. However, they remain firmly in the play-off places after eight Championship games played.

The Whites are suffering from a lot of injuries of late, and while January is still a bit away, the club may be putting plans in place to be active once the transfer window reopens once again.

Leeds have recently been linked with a move for Port Vale youngster Karl Agnero. Stoke City and Norwich City are also keen on the 16-year-old, as well as other teams from the Championship and the Premier League. Agnero has been impressing in Port Vale’s under-18s and was handed his first team debut earlier this season in the EFL Trophy against Wolves’ under-21s.

As well as looking at Agnero, Leeds are also interested in signing Bristol Rovers’ Kofi Shaw. The 17-year-old has broken into the first team at the Memorial Stadium, and his performances have caught the attention of the Whites and Premier League side Aston Villa. Now one TalkSPORT pundit believes if Leeds want to find their next Gray, then it could cost them just £5 million to sign Shaw.

Carlton Palmer says Kofi Shaw will cost at least £5m

Leeds are among the teams interested in signing Shaw, as the winger has impressed in the handful of appearances he has made this season. And TalkSPORT pundit Carlton Palmer believes it would cost Leeds around £5 million to sign Shaw, and he could be their next Archie Gray.

Palmer told Football League World: “Daniel Farke has shown that he is prepared to give young players the opportunity. Look at Archie Gray, the young 18-year-old who’s just moved on to Spurs, and he featured 40-odd times for Leeds last season.

“What he’s worth is a difficult one, as he’s a very talented youngster. Obviously, he needs to be getting game time and Matt Taylor has said they are conscious he’s only 17, and that they need to manage his game time and how he plays.

“Bristol Rovers will be looking for decent money for him already; maybe £5 million or 6 million with add-ons. Then maybe Bristol Rovers could do a deal which involves him being loaned back, so that he gets his education.”

Leeds will be keen to add the next young star to their squad whether that be for their own top flight conquest or for future big money sales, and it seems Shaw and Agnero are top of the list for the time being.

Tom Latham on Bangladesh T20Is: 'Things won't be easy over here'

“We have to stick to a brand of cricket that we believe can be successful in these conditions,” says the NZ stand-in captain

Mohammad Isam31-Aug-20212:11

Latham – Exciting opportunity for me to play T20s again

The upcoming five-match T20I series against Bangladesh will pose two major challenges to Tom Latham, who will lead the inexperienced New Zealand side in the absence of a number of seniors including Kane Williamson. If that in itself is a challenge, considering that Bangladesh are fresh off thrashing Australia 4-1 earlier this month, Latham will have to shift gears to adapt to the shortest format, having last played a T20I in 2017. His previous T20 at the domestic level though was in 2019, when he scored a 57-ball century .Acknowledging that leading the side “is a really big honour”, Latham, who will also don the keeping gloves, feels “things won’t be easy over here” in Dhaka, with the series beginning on Wednesday.Related

What the upcoming tours to Bangladesh and Pakistan mean for NZ

“Obviously, I haven’t played for a long time,” Latham said. “The way the world is at the moment, what NZC is doing for player welfare, it has presented an opportunity for a lot of the guys, including myself. We know things won’t be easy over here looking at the Australia series.”As a leader, you are always looking to grow and improve. This format presents another opportunity. I have had captaincy experience in the past. This is a slightly younger group. There’s a bit of experience here, so I will try to lean on those guys as much as possible. I will be behind the stumps as well.”Even though the second-string New Zealand side – none of them will feature in the upcoming T20 World Cup – will take on a full-strength Bangladesh, Latham believes “there has been a good vibe around the group” and the series will be an opportunity for the inexperienced players to step up. Ahead of this trip to Bangladesh, New Zealand simulated spin-friendly conditions during their winter camps in Mount Maunganui and Lincoln. They also had five outdoor training sessions before the series opener.”Most of the guys have experience at this level before,” Latham said. “Couple of guys haven’t been in the squad before, it is exciting for them to get in the group and try to keep things as relaxed as possible.”We had really good training over the past five days. We will finish off our final preparations today. We have been well looked after in Bangladesh. There has been a good vibe around the group.”The guys are looking forward to getting stuck in cricket. We have had two camps, so from a preparation point of view, it has been a long time. Everyone is pretty excited to get going tomorrow,” he said.Tom Latham said that the team will be wary of Mustafizur’s slower balls•BCB

On paper, Bangladesh are favourites to win the series, given the home advantage and the familiarity of the conditions. However, Latham categorically mentioned that they are in Bangladesh to topple the home side.”It is pretty easy to motivate yourself when playing for the country,” he said. “I personally haven’t had a lot of opportunities in T20s, so it is exciting. Even for the other guys.”Most of the guys have played T20s for New Zealand but probably not as much as they would like to. We have to enjoy ourselves out there and stick to a brand of cricket that we believe can be successful in these conditions. Our goal is to win the series.”Aware of the challenges in Dhaka that includes adapting to slow, turning tracks, Latham is confident that New Zealand have acclimatised to the conditions in the last five days.”We are preparing for wickets that Australia faced about a month ago. We had some really good camps in New Zealand. We have to play on a surface that will be a lot more challenging than what we expect,” he said.Even though spinners are expected to play a key role, Latham said that the team will be wary of Bangladesh’s left-arm fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman who could be lethal at the start of the innings but he also said New Zealand have “come up with plans best to negate them”.”Mustafiz at the top of the innings, is renowned for his slower balls,” Latham, who has never played in Bangladesh, but has scored plenty of runs against them in New Zealand, said. “We saw how he bowled against Australia. The spinners at the top and through the middle will present the challenges. We are looking forward to facing them tomorrow.”
