Julen Lopetegui’s time at West Ham United hasn’t gone exactly to plan, taking over from David Moyes this summer, and aiming to transform the Hammers from a counter-attacking side, into a more control-based, possession-heavy team.

West Ham sit 14th in the Premier League after 14 games played, winning four times, drawing three, and losing seven already this season.

Lopetegui’s side are averaging 46.4% possession, the eighth lowest total in the division, are taking 14.7 shots per game (6th highest), and are conceding 15.8 shots per game (4th most).

Lopetegui’s future seems to be in trouble, as West Ham are already drawing up shortlists of new candidates to take over from the 58-year-old Spanish coach, one of which has been out of a job since the 2022/23 season.

Graham Potter to West Ham

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, one name on the West Ham manager shortlist is Graham Potter, who was sacked by Chelsea in the 2022/23 season, having only taken charge of 31 games as manager, averaging 1.42 points per match.

The English coach had Chelsea averaging around 58.8% possession, taking 12.7 shots per game (only scoring 38 goals that season), and conceding 11.5 shots per game.

Whilst the numbers were not terrible, their league position was, finishing 12th that campaign after sacking Potter, trying to navigate turbulent times under new ownership.

While he is still considered a top manager, and is clearly taking his time to pick the right job before jumping back in, the one concern that could be had around Potter is the fact he hasn’t had a job since that tough Chelsea time, and how he will bounce back from it.

But perhaps the best name on the short list isn’t actually Potter but instead is Sergio Conceicao, the most experienced of the three names discussed by the Hammers board, and an option that could bring real stability to the club in a season of struggle.

Possessing a brand of “heavy metal” football in the words of scout Antonio Mango, Conceicao could well be the perfect manager for West Ham, being adaptable – much like Potter – in his ability to go from a control-based 4-2-3-1, into a deeper 4-4-2 block, and change game plans based on the opposition and scoreline in a game.

This is a huge factor in such a competitive league, especially for a club like West Ham, who have a squad capable of controlling games against the bottom half of the table, but perhaps need a different approach when facing top-half sides, who possess slightly more on-ball quality. That was particularly evident when the Irons were dispatched 5-2 by Arsenal a few days ago.

Conceicao’s best period was clearly at FC Porto, managing there from 2017-2024, winning three Primeira Liga titles (2017/18, 2019/20 and 2021/22), four Taca de Portugal’s (2019/20, 2021/22, 2022/23 and 2023/24), one Taca da Liga (2022/23), and three Supertaca Candido de Oliveira’s.

During the 2023/24 season, Porto averaged 63.6% possession (the most in their division), and only conceded 8.3 shots per game (the 2nd fewest in their division), showing Conceicao’s ability to coach a defensive unit and control games with more of the ball, two factors West Ham wish to improve upon since moving on from Moyes. Those numbers are also far better than the ones achieved by Potter when he was at Stamford Bridge.

With Lopetegui’s struggles already this season, West Ham need to ensure this next appointment can provide stability to their current squad and drag them away from the relegation zone.

Conceicao seems the best fit to do this, bringing extra defensive stability compared to Potter, and therefore making him the ideal appointment for the Hammers.

Ravi Bopara: My attempt to bowl a knuckle ball was mistaken for ball-tampering

Sylhet Sunrisers captain Ravi Bopara has had his penalty for “changing the condition of the ball” reduced from a three-match ban to a fine of 75% of his match fee and three demerit points.The incident had occurred during Sylhet’s game against Khulna Tigers on February 7, and, initially, match referee Debabrata Paul had imposed the ban. But following Bopara’s appeal on February 8, the BPL technical committee reduced the match referee’s ruling.Later, at a press conference* after the match against Comilla Victorians, Bopara claimed that his grip for the knuckle ball was mistaken for ball-tampering. Bopara brought a ball to the press conference room anticipating the question. Showing how he bowls the knuckle ball, he explained that he grips it in a particular way if the ball is wet.”I bowl a knuckle ball where I run in hiding the ball,” he said. “Sometimes I run in holding it like this and that . It is not easy to get this grip, especially with the wet ball. You have to find the best part of the ball to put it. Otherwise, if the ball is wet, it can fly and you can bowl no-balls [for height].”I think there was a mistake there. It is disappointing but this is life.”Related

Bopara was caught on camera running his finger over the ball during the ninth over of the Khulna innings. The on-field umpires Mahfuzur Rahman and Prageeth Rambukwella duly stopped play and changed the ball during the over, and docked Sylhet five runs. They had brought the charge against Bopara to the match referee, relating to changing the condition of the ball which is a breach of clause 41.3 of the BPL’s match playing conditions.A BCB statement on Friday read: “The technical committee reversed the suspension and executed the fine in accordance with the authority awarded to it in Article 8.2.3.4 of the [tournament’s] code of conduct which states that ‘the Technical Committee shall have the power to increase or decrease, amend or otherwise substitute a new decision on the appropriateness (or otherwise) of the sanction imposed at first instance’. It is further confirmed as per Article 8.2.3.6 that, ‘Any decision made by the Technical Committee under this Article 8.2, shall be the full, final and complete disposition of the matter and will be binding on all parties’.”If Bopara gets another demerit point during this tournament, he will get a one-match suspension. Spinner Ashton Agar has become the second Australia player to test positive for Covid-19 in 24 hours, and has been ruled out of the entire ODI series against Pakistan in Lahore.Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed on Tuesday morning in Pakistan that Agar had tested positive, just 24 hours after Josh Inglis also tested positive. – Temos que focar no nosso time, acima de tudo. Melhorar, de alguma forma, seja com ou sem a bola. Talvez chutar mais de fora da área, um exemplo só. Mas focar mais nosso time e fazer alguns ajustes para determinadas equipes, depois fica mais fácil. It’s fair to say that Leeds United have been blessed with some top talents in recent years, even when matters on the pitch haven’t always gone so smoothly.

In the here and now, a new group of heroes are attempting to get the Whites back up to the Premier League, with Ao Tanaka just one fresh face that the often restless Leeds fanbase have taken to since his summer arrival.

Leeds have often struck gold in the central midfield department, away from just Tanaka shining, with both Mateusz Klich and Kalvin Phillips sticking out as modern-day greats in West Yorkshire.

Both Klich and Phillips are most fondly remembered for being stalwarts in the middle of the park under the celebrated reign of Marcelo Bielsa, who is still loved to this day at Elland Road, much like the two aforementioned midfielders.

The Polish ace would prove to be a masterstroke of a signing, even if he was loaned out mid-way through his first campaign donning Leeds white, with his tenaciousness centrally key to Bielsa’s high-octane approach.

Never one to shy away from a tough battle, the adored Whites number 43 would also go on to be a goalscoring menace for his side, with a mightily impressive 24 goals notched up from 191 total appearances before his sad exit to DC United in 2023.

Phillips’ departure to Manchester City was also tinged with obvious sorrow, considering his boyhood loyalties to the West Yorkshire outfit.

Bielsa would turn Phillips into a £45m star, with the homegrown Leeds talent amassing 234 appearances by the time of his move away to the Etihad, scoring 14 goals and assisting a further 13 along the way.

Leeds fans will take solace in the fact that the current crop available to Farke can also write their names into the history books like Klich and Phillips, with one midfield gem a great combination of the two with his performances of late.

Joe Rothwell signing on the dotted line this summer for the promotion chasers would have gone under the radar, away from the more flashy purchases of the likes of Largie Ramazani and Manor Solomon.

Still, the midfield loanee has more than proven his worth now for Farke’s men, with his game-time ramped up ever since the likes of Ilia Gruev suffered a serious knee injury.

The 29-year-old is now up to 21 games played in the Championship this season, with 13 of those being starts as he begins to form a steady midfield relationship with Tanaka, who has even been heralded as an “unbelievable signing” by his manager for his stylish showings in the middle.

Rothwell is also deserving of some praise, with the ex-Southampton man a perfect mix of both Klich and Phillips in terms of being able to get stuck in with duels being won, whilst also never looking fazed with the ball at his feet.

His numbers for this month so far demonstrate that well, with Rothwell never falling below 90% with his pass accuracy across his three December contests in the Championship, whilst also winning a collective 11 duels.

Although he is yet to score this season in the second tier, the midfield star also has a first-time bullet up his sleeve, seen last campaign when he scored this beauty for the Saints on the way to promotion to the Premier League being reached.

His then Saints boss Russell Martin would even label him as “amazing”, with Farke hopeful there’s even more to come from his number eight as their own promotion glory is sealed.

Newcastle United have hit a convincing vein of form in recent weeks, rekindling their Premier League campaign and beating off Brentford to advance to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, where Arsenal await.

On Saturday, Ipswich Town were picked apart by Eddie Howe’s ruthless men, who were more like vultures than magpies. It was a season-defining week, and several stars stepped up.

Sure, Alexander Isak bagged a hat-trick, but Jacob Murphy continued his red-hot streak of form with two assists to make it three goals and three set-ups in as many matches.

Howe has many qualities, but one of his chief footballing virtues must be how he’s elevated peripheral members to Toon stardom.

Newcastle’s team is populated by a mix of players, ranging in different levels of quality. Some excellent signings have been made along the way, but Howe has triumphed in nurturing some existing members to the fore.

Joelinton and Fabian Schar are perhaps the two salient names. Joelinton’s refashioning into a robust and powerful midfielder after initially struggling as a centre-forward has been masterful, while Schar, 32, was once labelled a “walking mistake” by journalist Josh Gibson.

He may not be the headline-stealer all that often, patchy at the best of times, but Murphy has belied his former struggles to become a key part of a talented United side.

Unfortunately, not every struggling star has been able to restore their standing and become a mainstay within Howe’s exciting system.

Miguel Almiron, for example, has never been able to recapture that fleeting run of incredible form in the build-up to Champions League qualification. Elsewhere, Matt Targett has fallen into the St. James’ Park shadows over the past few years, and must surely be set for sale at the end of the season.

Why Newcastle must sell Matt Targett

Newcastle signed Targett from Aston Villa for a £15m fee in June 2022, sealing the deal after he had spent the second half of the 2021/22 campaign on loan at St. James’ Park.

Penning a four-year deal, the left-back will not be part of the potential exodus next summer, with big names like Schar, Callum Wilson, Jamal Lascelles and Sean Longstaff currently heading toward the end of their contracts.

Instead, the summer represents the perfect opportunity for PIF to offload a rarely-seen player who is taking up a significant part of the wage bill, earning £100k per week.

This is a hefty wage indeed, with Targett out-earning mainstays such as Sven Botman, Joe Willock and Harvey Barnes. Moreover, he’s actually earning over three times as much as Murphy, who is surely deserving of a bigger pay packet given his importance to the success of Howe’s side at the moment.

The 29-year-old hasn’t played in the Premier League this season despite sitting on the bench on nine occasions. So, it’s pretty clear that Howe doesn’t trust him to play a role in his current squad.

Last winter, it was revealed by Caught Offside that the Tynesiders were open to selling their fringe defender, and while the limited options at Howe’s disposal this year perhaps preclude a January sale, he’s got to be released from his sentence in the shadows at the end of the term, if only to prove to stars like Murphy that they are valued within the squad.
