'It's exciting the mix we'll have' – Matthew Mott keen for new England management group to get going

New white-ball coach sees parallels with time in charge of all-conquering Australia women’s team

Matthew Mott, England’s new white-ball coach, believes the coaching set-up appointed by the ECB is an “exciting” one, and is looking forward to working with Brendon McCullum, his Test counterpart, and Rob Key, the managing director of men’s cricket.Mott was unveiled earlier this week, having spent seven years in charge of Australia’s highly successful women’s team. With England’s men currently ranked No. 2 in both ODI and T20 cricket, playing to a clearly defined philosophy honed under the captaincy of Eoin Morgan, Mott said he saw parallels with his previous job.Related

Australia prepare for 'pretty weird' return without Matthew Mott

Australia’s women were reigning 50-over and T20 world champions when Mott took charge, although they lost both titles before going on to reestablish themselves as the dominant force, winning back-to-back World T20s in 2018 and 2020 before going unbeaten through this year’s ODI World Cup.”There is a lot of similarities and that’s certainly what we spoke about in the interview process,” Mott told SEN WA radio. “I took over a very successful team when I started and to be honest we almost seemed to be going backwards for a little bit. It wasn’t until the 2017 World Cup [when Australia lost at the semi-final stage] that we had to really start from scratch. It was the pivotal moment for that team, they had to come up with some solutions on why we were being timid under pressure, and it was the playing group themselves who got together.”His coaching style is likely to resonate with the players who have thrived under Morgan in limited-overs cricket, culminating in a maiden men’s 50-over World Cup success in 2019. “When I look at a player now I try to forget about the barriers around their game and try instil confidence that they take the game on,” Mott said. “Free the players up, let them enjoy themselves, and help them when they fall down.”With England’s Test team set to be the priority, Mott has already been told by Key that he “may not get your best side” at times. However, Mott already has a good working relationship with McCullum, having spent time together with Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, and he said he was keen to get together alongside Key and map out the road ahead.”Just the way the schedule looks – I haven’t looked too far into the next two or three years – but it will be a little like ships in the night. England play a lot of cricket in the next 12 months. Initially I’ll get over there and try to spend some time with him in London, and Rob Key, to try and get through the plan.”I have a great relationship with Brendon, I worked with him at KKR and he was pretty close to getting me to New Zealand a few years ago. We are very different people. It’s exciting the mix we’ll have, especially Rob, myself and Brendon with three really good, different ideas coming in.”Mott also admitted that England splitting the coaching roles had been a factor in his decision to apply. Australia have just appointed Andrew McDonald as head coach for the men’s team across all formats, but Mott said he would not have relished such a demanding workload.”Different systems have different needs,” he said. “What I will say is what attracted me to this role was the fact it was split. Family is really important to me and the idea of being on the road for 11 months wasn’t going to be a thing I’d really enjoy. For me it will be great to go back and watch some county cricket [Mott previously coached Glamorgan], get to know some of the fringe players, I think that’s important for me.”As for leading England in a T20 World Cup on Australian soil later this year, Mott said that parking his allegiances would not be an issue.”Coaching is one of those games where there’s only a few positions at the right time. I’ll wish well to the Australian cricket team, I coached a lot of those guys at New South Wales and love seeing them do well. Ben Sawyer, our assistant coach, said this when we talked about franchise cricket, you’ve just got to love the one you’re with. When I’m in there I’ll be trying to do everything I can to win cricket matches and leave some sort of legacy when I do move on.”

Both teams opt to retire out batters in eight-over thrash at wet Edgbaston

Birmingham Bears returned to winning ways with a thrilling one-run Vitality Blast win over Notts Outlaws at Edgbaston. Needing three to win and two to tie from the last ball, Outlaws batter Tom Moores could only scuff Craig Miles for a single. It rounded off a stunning Bears fightback by after Outlaws, chasing 98 for 5 in an eight-overs-per-side contest, charged to 55 for 1 after 20 balls as Alex Hales thrashed 30 from just nine balls. Spin bowler Jake Lintott turned the tide with a superb over which saw him dismiss Hales and Ben Duckett while conceding just two runs.Outlaws needed 15 from the last over but could find only 13 as Miles held his nerve. The game also featured two batters opting to retire out. With one ball to go and six runs needed, Samit Patel walked off from the non-striker’s end to get Calvin Harrison, a faster runner, to the crease. Earlier on, in the Bears’ innings, Carlos Brathwaite had retired out, in the belief that Sam Hain would be better-equipped to score quickly off the spinners.Put in on a relentlessly damp, grey afternoon, the Bears made 98 thanks largely to Chris Benjamin, who hit 36 off 17 balls. Patel bowled with his customary nous and control for 2-0-12-2.England paceman Olly Stone then marked his return to the first team after long-term injury with a wicket first ball but Notts were on course for victory until Lintott’s brilliant analysis of 2-0-6-2.Bears lost Paul Stirling to the first ball of their innings, but the wicket came at a cost for Notts as Joe Clarke fell awkwardly, taking the catch at long leg, and limped from the field. Benjamin then improvised effectively, hitting four fours and two sixes. He was supported by lively cameos from Jake Bethell, with 17 off nine, at the start and Alex Davies, 14 from four, in the final over.Outlaws also lost a wicket first ball when Clarke slashed Stone to short third man. Duckett and Hales hit immediate overdrive to heave the match their side’s way but they fell in the space of three ball from Lintott, the former slickly caught at deep extra by Hain and the latter driving a sharp return catch to the bowler. The potential match-winners keep on coming in Outlaws’ batting line-up but Dan Christian holed out to Brathwaite and Moores and Patel failed to find the requisite 15 from the final over.

An upgrade on Son: Tottenham chasing £29m phenom with "an eye for goal"

We are now firmly in the second half of the season, and Tottenham Hotspur’s campaign has gone from bad to worse.

Ange Postecoglou’s great entertainers went into their early kick-off against Newcastle United on Saturday in 11th place, and thanks to a 2-1 defeat, now find themselves in 12th, with a North London derby their next game in the competition.

However, while the result against the Toon was poor, the overall performance was not and showed that there is still a chance that the manager could turn things around.

Tottenham Hotspur managerAngePostecogloubefore the match

So, recent reports linking the club to a new attacking signing who could help him do that this month should excite the fans, even if the player in question could spell trouble for Son Heung-min’s place in the team.

Tottenham looking at new winger this January

According to a recent report from Caught Offside, Tottenham are one of several teams interested in Feyenoord winger Igor Paixao.

Alongside the Lilywhites, the report has revealed that Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, West Ham and Roma have all scouted and been seriously impressed by the 24-year-old dynamo.

While the level of competition for the attacker’s signature is far from ideal for the North Londoners, the good news is that he shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg, as the report claims that the Dutch side are looking for up to €35m for him, which is about £29m.

It could be a challenging transfer to get over the line, but given Paixao’s ability and impressive form, it’s one worth pursuing, even if he could seriously limit Son’s minutes going forward.

How Paixao compares to Son

Despite starting over the weekend, the last year or so has made it quite clear that while he can be a somewhat useful squad player, Timo Werner is certainly not Spurs’ first-choice left-winger.

That honour still belongs to club captain Son, although for all of his incredible performances for the club over the years, his influence over games is starting to wane.

So, were Daniel Levy and Co to sign Paixao this month, then it would likely be with the intention of him ultimately replacing the South Korean.

With that said, how do the pair actually stack up against one another, and would the “exquisite” Brazilian, as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, really be an upgrade on the former Bayer Leverkusen star?

Well, from a pure output perspective, which is what matters most for any attacker, the answer is a resounding yes.

For example, in 23 appearances this season, the Chuncheon-born star has scored seven goals and provided six assists, which means he’s maintained an average of a goal involvement every 1.76 games.

Now, that is still undeniably impressive for any winger, let alone one who is set to turn 33 this summer, but it is still worse than the man who could be his upgrade.

For example, in just 24 appearances this year, the Macapá-born gem, whom Mango claims “has an eye for goal,” has found the back of the net on five occasions and provided 13 assists to boot.

This means that the 5 foot 6 dangerman is maintaining a brilliant average of a goal involvement every 1.33 games.

Ultimately, Son is undoubtedly a Spurs legend and could still be a valuable squad player for a few years more, but as things stand, his impact on games is starting to fade, and it would appear that Paixao could be the perfect upgrade on him.

Therefore, Levy and Co must do what they can to bring him to N17 before someone else gets there first.

Confira a tabela completa aqui!

Newcastle now scouting £15m gem shining in Germany’s second division

Newcastle United are “keen” on completing the signing of “one of the brightest forward talents” in his country, according to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg.

Latest Newcastle news

It has been another good week for Eddie Howe’s side, whose superb run of form continued with a precious 2-0 win away to Arsenal on Tuesday night. It means the Magpies have one foot in the final of the EFL Cup, as they look to end their long and painful trophy drought.

Up next for Newcastle is FA Cup third round duty, with Howe’s men hosting Bromley on Sunday afternoon. Their opponents are currently playing in League Two, so it goes without saying that elimination for the Premier League side would be one of the biggest shocks in the competition in many years.

Newcastle players celebrate

With the January transfer window now in full swing, it’s no surprise to see the Magpies being linked with plenty of players, including Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. With Martin Dubravka leaving St James’ Park this month, a backup option to Nick Pope is needed, as well as a potential long-term successor to the England international.

Former Reds stopper Kamil Grabara has also been mentioned as an option in goal for Newcastle, with the 26-year-old Pole currently playing for VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.

Newcastle "keen" on signing talented youngster

According to Plettenberg on X, Newcastle are among the Premier League clubs “keen” on signing PAOK forward Stefanos Tzimas, who is considered a huge attacking prospect currently starring on loan in the 2. Bundesliga for FC Nurnberg.

Not much may be known about the 19-year-old ace, but the fact that Plettenberg speaks about him in such a positive light already suggests that the Magpies would be signing a player with an immense amount of potential.

Tzimas has scored eight goals in just 15 appearances on loan at Nurnberg this season, outlining his quality, and he has been capped for Greece across four different youth age groups, scoring a combined 16 goals in 32 caps.

Dravid: 'We have started Test matches well but haven't been able to finish well'

“We need to maintain that intensity, maintain that level of fitness, maintain that level of performance right through a Test match”

Osman Samiuddin05-Jul-20221:02

Dravid: The batting has probably not been up to scratch

Rahul Dravid, India’s head coach, pointed to potential issues with fitness and sustained intensity among the bowlers in the aftermath of their failure to defend a target of 378 against England in the fifth Test. England chased down their highest fourth-innings target at Edgbaston with seven wickets in hand half an hour before lunch on the final day. By the end, England had scored their second-innings runs at 4.93 per over. This was also the highest target India have failed to defend in their history.Related

Ben Stokes: England approach means opposing teams will now 'fear' third innings

The defeat denied India a first series win in England since 2007 and meant that the interrupted Pataudi Trophy was eventually shared 2-2. This result came on the back of two defeats in South Africa earlier this year, when India failed to defend 240 and 212 in successive Tests, having defended 305 in the first.”It’s been disappointing for us,” Dravid said. “I mean we had a couple of opportunities in South Africa as well and here as well. I just think it’s something we need to look at, something we need to probably work on.”We have been very good at that over the last few years, in terms of taking wickets and winning those Test matches. But, yeah, we haven’t been able to do that over the last few months. It could be a variety of factors: it could be maybe we just need to maintain that intensity, maintain that level of fitness, or maintain that level of performance right through a Test match.”India have used a combination of four pace bowlers from Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur and Umesh Yadav across those Tests with one spinner: R Ashwin in South Africa and Ravindra Jadeja at Edgbaston. It wasn’t the bowling in the fourth innings alone, however, where the Test was lost. India’s third-innings collapse of 7 for 92, which scaled back a potential target from 450-plus to under 400, played a part.”In the second innings, we have not batted as well,” Dravid said. “If you look at all the third innings of these two Test matches overseas and this one, the batting has also probably not been up to scratch. In both areas, we have sort of started the Test matches well but we haven’t been able to finish well and yeah we need to get better at that and certainly need to improve.”Post-result, there will be scrutiny – as there was all summer last year – on the exclusion of Ashwin. He didn’t play a single Test of the four last year, though India were leading the series 2-1 at the end of it. Dravid did not think, however, that the surface warranted two spinners.”In hindsight, you can always look at things and look at the combination of your team. Shardul has done a good job for us in these games,” Dravid said. “It is always not easy to leave someone like Ash out in a Test match. But having said that, when we looked at the wicket on the first day, it had a pretty good even covering of grass. We felt that there was enough in it for the fast bowlers.1:01

Dravid: The pitch ‘didn’t really turn enough to justify’ playing Ashwin

“And even going into the last day the wicket hasn’t really spun – whether it’s for Jack Leach, whether it’s for Ravindra Jadeja who bowled through the Test match. If anything, because maybe the weather played a part over the first days, and there weren’t long phases of sun, the wicket didn’t break up as much as we expected it to, or didn’t spin as much as we expected it to. It’s easy to look back on the fifth day and say it would have been nice to have a second spinner in the fourth innings, but again it didn’t really turn to justify that.”Perhaps the year-long gap for the conclusion of the series played a part. When the Old Trafford Test was called off last year, India and England were both in very different spaces. England, in particular, were in a rut of results that would see them lose the Ashes 4-0, a series in the Caribbean and, ultimately result in a comprehensive leadership change. In the interim, India also have a new captain and coach and though they have won at home comfortably, they did lose their only overseas Test series in South Africa.”I don’t want to make excuses,” Dravid said. “I wasn’t part of the team then. India was on a roll at that stage. England were probably in a slightly different situation at that point of time. But they have come here on the back of three consecutive wins against New Zealand. We have had a long gap in between Test cricket, but no excuses.”They played well over the five days. We had our opportunities, we played well over the first three days. We couldn’t maintain that. That’s why Test cricket is hard. And that’s why Test cricket means that you have got to be able to keep putting those performances right through the five days. We were not able to do that and they did that better than us and they deserved to win this Test match.”
