Sri Lanka seek to keep series alive at their unlikely home-away-from-home

Tourists have avoided defeat at Lord’s for 33 years and counting. Can they rise to the occasion again?

Andrew Miller28-Aug-2024Big picture: Sunny weather, sunny times? Is there a danger that a competitive Test series might break out in London over the coming fortnight? This is a city where Sri Lanka, remarkably, have not lost a single Test in six visits since August 1991. Admittedly, five of those have been draws at Lord’s, although next week’s return to The Oval for the first time since Murali’s match in 1998 will be a reminder that one of the more disparaged of touring teams have long had the ability to confound expectations on their infrequent England visits.Related

Switch Hit: UnBazballian

Which is, to a greater or lesser extent, what Sri Lanka managed to do over the course of four improbably competitive days at Emirates Old Trafford. England eventually landed their fourth Test win out of four this summer, but not before they’d been made to struggle for the upper hand with ball and, latterly, bat, as Joe Root dropped anchor in a distinctly unBazballian 62 not out from 128 balls to oversee a taxing 205-run chase. The subplots along the way were many and varied. What might have happened on the first evening, for instance, if England hadn’t bowed to the umpires’ assertion that it was too dark to bowl their quicks, and simply gone off for bad light instead of offering Milan Rathnayake 12 overs of spin in which to move towards the highest score by a No.9 on Test debut?England assemble for their team photo at Lord’s•Getty Images

Conversely, what might have happened had England not managed to wrangle a ball-change after 41 overs of Sri Lanka’s second innings, by which stage Angelo Mathews was channelling his 2014 glory days while Kamindu Mendis was on course for his third Test hundred in the space of four calmly authoritative Test appearances? As had been the case in the Oval Ashes Test 12 months earlier, England had made their bed and deserved to have to sleep in it with their treatment of their original ball. They had sacrificed new-ball swing in the quest for a scuffed-up surface and some of the prodigious reverse that Asitha Fernando in particular had harvested. And even if their replacement ball was the same age as the original, it was like comparing a 41-year-old Hollywood actress with a vagrant who’s lived his adult life in a ditch. Dhananjaya de Silva, Sri Lanka’s captain, confirmed he had spoken to the match referee about the ball-change after the Test, and with such issues an increasingly frequent aspect of the English Test summer, this is clearly a loophole that deserves to be tightened up for future engagements. All things being equal, however, it was hard to argue that Sri Lanka were robbed in the course of the first Test. Few sides that struggle to 6 for 3 in the first innings, then 1 for 2 in the second, can expect to get away unpunished, although seeing as one of the reasons for those scorelines was a notably fallow display from the otherwise sturdy Dimuth Karunaratne, who averages a tick below 41 in his 92 Tests, and who made 87 runs for once out on his last trip to Lord’s in 2016, there is reason to believe that history won’t repeat itself this week. For starters, the team as a whole are now better acquainted with English conditions. Their preparation prior to the Old Trafford Test had been a low-key warm-up against England Lions in Worcester, which unsurprisingly proved insufficient to get them fully up to speed. And, after an intermittently damp experience in Manchester, the weather for London over the coming few days should be distinctly sunnier. There is no proven correlation between warm weather and heightened Sri Lankan performances, but anecdotal evidence from the past 40 years would tend to back up the suspicion that they tend to like it hot.Either way, Sri Lanka have been granted the window in the calendar that they have been crying out for since their first forays to England in the 1980s. Here we are, in the thick of a full Test series at the sharp end of the English summer, as opposed to a one-off afterthought, as was the case from 1984 to 1998, or an early-season trial by seam and swing, as per 2002 onwards. The onus is on the class of 2024 to live up to the billing they’ve been afforded. And in spite of most expectations, that’s more or less what they managed in the first match of three.Dan Lawrence, Brendon McCullum and Harry Brook arrive at practice•Getty Images

Form guideEngland WWWWL (last five Tests, most recent first)
Sri Lanka LWWWLIn the spotlight: Ollie Pope and Asitha FernandoOllie Pope has made a winning start to his Test captaincy career, which is not to be sniffed at – many great leaders, including his England predecessor, didn’t manage that feat. But when it comes to his day job as England’s No.3, Pope’s main challenge is compartmentalisation, and two glaringly sub-par performances reinforced the sense that his game isn’t quite where he wants or needs it to be. In the first innings he was bowled neck-and-crop by an admittedly excellent ball from Asitha; but in the second, his tendency towards skittishness in the early stages of an innings resulted in an ill-conceived reverse-sweep to slip – the very same shot that underpinned his GOAT-contender innings at Hyderabad in the winter. On the face of it, he’s still in credit this summer, with 251 runs at 41.83 after four Tests. However, there’s been something intangibly unsettled about his batting post-Hyderabad. Whether it’s a mindset or technical issue, only he can truly say, but he won’t get a chance to focus fully on a remedy in his current stand-in role.Asitha Fernando was phenomenally good at Old Trafford. He led the line for Sri Lanka in each innings, easing past 50 Test wickets in the space of 15 Tests as he mixed conventional seam and swing with prodigious amounts of reverse – which in itself was quite the feat given how lush the outfield had been all match long. His challenge now is to back that performance up at Lord’s (and The Oval) in the coming days. England will no doubt be better prepared for his unassuming threat, having had a good sighting of his probing methods, but Aaqib Javed, Sri Lanka’s bowling coach, likened his effortless each-way movement to that of Pakistan’s Mohammad Asif, and for Test cricket’s connoisseurs, there really is no higher praise. Just ask Kevin Pietersen. If he can keep England guessing with new ball and old, so much the better for Sri Lanka’s hopes of keeping the series alive.Team news: Stone in for Wood, SL consider KumaraAs ever, England were proactive in their team announcement, confirming on Tuesday that they would be making one enforced change to their XI from Old Trafford. Mark Wood is out of the series with a thigh strain, so Nottinghamshire’s Olly Stone slots back in as the like-for-like option, ahead of the uncapped 20-year-old left-armer, Josh Hull, who will be using this week to soak up the international atmosphere. Stone hasn’t played a Test since 2021, having since had two screws inserted in his back, but he’s been fit and firing across formats all summer long, and has tended to look the part in his limited England appearances to date. In three Tests since 2019, he’s picked up ten wickets at 19.40.England: 1 Dan Lawrence, 2 Ben Duckett, 3 Ollie Pope (capt), 4 Joe Root, 5 Harry Brook, 6 Jamie Smith (wk), 7 Chris Woakes, 8 Gus Atkinson, 9 Matthew Potts, 10 Olly Stone, 11 Shoaib BashirSri Lanka have also confirmed their playing XI ahead of the game. They had put up a good fight in the end, of the first Test with Kamindu and Asitha their stand-out performers, but their main issue came right at right at the top of the order. Nishan Madushka has retained his role as opener but could muster only four runs across both innings in the first Test. Pathum Nissanka will slot in at No. 3 as Kusal Mendis lost his place despite deputising well in England’s second innings. Dinesh Chandimal has recovered from a gruesome blow to the thumb at Old Trafford to retain his spot. On the bowling front, Lahiru Kumara has been recalled to provide some extra muscle, at the expense of the left-armer, Vishwa Fernando.Sri Lanka: 1 Dimuth Karunaratne, 2 Nishan Madushka, 3 Pathum Nissanka, 4 Angelo Mathews, 5 Dinesh Chandimal, 6 Dhananjaya de Silva (capt), 7 Kamindu Mendis, 8 Milan Rathnayake, 9 Prabath Jayasuriya, 10 Asitha Fernando, 11 Lahiru KumaraSanath Jayasuriya talks to his Sri Lanka team before the second Test•Getty Images

Pitch and conditions: Sun set to shineThe weather is set fair, and Lord’s in the sunshine can be tough place for a bowler. There have been some formidable snore-draws in the County Championship this summer, with Middlesex passing 600 twice and 550 once and Glamorgan’s Sam Northeast surpassing Graham Gooch’s 333 as the highest individual scorer at the venue. That said, West Indies didn’t detain England’s bowlers for long in their visit in July, thanks to Gus Atkinson’s 12 wickets on debut. Pope noted that the pitch had a grassy tinge to it on the eve of the match, but expected to play pretty slow while the sun was out.Stats and trivia This will be Sri Lanka’s ninth Test at Lord’s since 1984, which will draw the ground level with Harare as their most frequent overseas venue. They have played at least that many Tests in six home venues, with the SSC in Colombo top of the pile on 45. Sri Lanka have never won a Test at Lord’s … but they very rarely lose at the venue either. They famously drew on their initial visit in 1984, while the most recent of their two defeats came in 1991, at the hands of Graham Gooch, Phil DeFreitas and Phil Tufnell. Since then, Sri Lanka have secured draws in all five of their visits to Lord’s, with their defiance in 2006 and 2014 proving critical in landing a series draw in the first instance, and a series win in the second. Despite his second-innings century at Old Trafford, Kamindu’s average has slipped from its previous heights … though not by much. His mark at the start of the series was 107.00 from three Tests; it is now 92.16 from four, with three hundreds and two further fifties in his seven innings to date. Dimuth Karunaratne needs 72 more runs to reach 7000 in Tests.Quotes”It’s good we’re getting pushed. Sri Lanka were impressive last week, especially the way they batted. When you come to England, you expect different conditions and the conditions weren’t your classic English-style pitches but at the same time, for the guys to go and put together some good scores and set us a chase from a hundred deficit is a credit to them.”
Ollie Pope expects England to come out on top but respects the challenge that Sri Lanka have posed “Overall, Pathum is the best batter in the country at the moment. He has a good mindset and he has a good technique. If we can get him into the team, that’s great. I have been talking about it for a while now. I think he will adjust to any format.”
Dhananjaya de Silva is all confident about Pathum Nissanka’s skills

Celtic want £7m star with "huge" potential but deal may hinge on Maeda exit

Celtic find themselves linked with several options in the hunt for a striker, but further movement to address their forward line may depend on outgoings, according to a report.

Celtic's mission to retain Daizen Maeda this summer

For the first time in a while, Celtic have an abundance of striking options, albeit it is hard to determine whether they have the quality that Brendan Rodgers requires to navigate another campaign where his side will hope to compete on multiple fronts.

Callum Osmand, Johnny Kenny, Adam Idah, and incoming new boy Shin Yamada have added variety in the final third. Still, there is no doubt that reflections on the summer window would be vastly altered if Daizen Maeda were to depart before the close of play.

Daizen Maeda and Greg Taylor in action for Celtic in the Scottish Cup.

Despite operating on the wing for most of his time in Glasgow, the Japan international played centrally on a frequent basis last season and rounded off a magnificent campaign with 33 goals across all competitions.

It always felt unlikely that he would last the duration of the market period without drawing attention, which has been the case amid interest from Leeds United, Brentford and others in his situation, albeit this came earlier on in proceedings.

Fenerbache have also been cited as admirers of Maeda and were known to be in the running. However, like many of Celtic’s high-profile departures, they tend to occur towards the end of the transfer window when clubs begin to realise they need to conduct business fast.

The Bhoys are closing in on another signing.

The Bhoys generally follow a similar policy regarding new additions. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see this topic of conversation come to life again over the next few weeks, and reports suggest this saga may be far from complete.

Celtic line up potential contingency if Daizen Maeda were to depart

According to TEAMtalk, Celtic have set their sights on Wycombe Wanderers striker Richard Kone as a potential replacement for Maeda, should the latter succumb to interest later in the window.

Tottenham Hotspur, Everton and West Ham United are reportedly monitoring his situation, while Brentford are clued in following their early groundwork on his unique profile.

Turning to the market, Celtic have identified Kone as a potential source of goals to replicate Maeda and scouted him on three occasions last season, even if a deal may prove tricky amid Wycombe’s stance on letting the Ivorian head elsewhere.

Setting out their stall, the third-tier outfit could demand £7 million for the Ivorian striker, which is said to be a figure the Bhoys are unwilling to pay unless they were to utilise funds generated by sales.

Brentford, Crystal Palace, Norwich City, Toulouse and Union Saint-Gilloise have been enticed by Kone, who managed to direct 40 of his 99 shots on target last season in League One.

Plates are beginning to spin for Celtic, but it is fair to say a fair level of complication stands in the way of being able to land the prolific 22-year-old, who has been labelled someone with a ‘huge amount of potential’ by West Ham insider ExWHUEmployee amid the Hammers’ interest in him.

Fifties to Grace Scrivens, Cordelia Griffith and Jodi Grewcock drive seven-wicket victory

Half-centuries from captain Grace Scrivens, Cordelia Griffith and Jodi Grewcock steered Sunrisers to a maiden Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy final appearance as they chased 233 to beat 2022 champions Northern Diamonds by seven wickets in a one-sided semi-final at Headingley.Sunrisers will meet South East Stars in next Saturday’s final at Leicester.Sunrisers held firm in a contest which swung back and forth, with opener Scrivens posting 56 off 73 balls, Griffith 68 off 89 off and Grewcock 63 not out off 68. The latter two posted season’s-best scores as victory was sealed in the 44th over.Diamonds, aiming for a fourth 50-over final in the five-year regional era, posted 232 for 8 thanks to opener Emma Marlow’s measured 63 added to 49 from Sterre Kalis and a late 32 not out from 15 balls for Phoebe Turner.Six of the seven bowlers employed by Scrivens, including herself, struck before she confidently laid the platform for a chase all but finished off by a 134-partnership for the third wicket between Griffith and Grewcock. It was their region’s highest of the season.Having elected to bat, the Diamonds innings was built around a solid start and a blistering end.Marlow shared in two early partnerships of substance – 48 for the first wicket with Lauren Winfield-Hill and 42 for the third with Kalis, who was run out at the end of the penultimate over. When Marlow fell, caught and bowled by new ball seamer Kate Coppack as the score fell to 119 for 3 after 29 overs, Sunrisers put the squeeze on impressively.Coppack was excellent in conceding only 29 runs from her 10 overs, while leg-spinner Grewcock also struck once and was nearly as miserly as she conceded 26 in eight overs.Coppack’s new-ball partner Eva Gray struck twice with her lively seamers, getting Erin Burns caught at mid-off and Abi Glen caught at short third as the score fell to 185 for 7 in the 47th over.Led by Phoebe Turner, Diamonds then counter-attacked as she crashed five boundaries in her cameo, including four of them off Gray as the 49th over cost 20.Key seamer Sophie Munro only bowling two early overs, including the wicket of Rebecca Duckworth caught behind, before leaving the field injured hurt Sunrisers on a sunny Headingley day. But they cruised with the bat.Sunrisers have now won eight RHF Trophy matches this season. In the first four seasons of regional cricket, which started in 2020, they only won six combined.Scrivens shared an opening partnership of 70 in 14 overs with Jo Gardner, which included the former hoisting the off-spin of Australian all-rounder Burns for six over wide long-on.After Gardner had been trapped lbw by Beth Langston for 19, Scrivens reached her fifty off 66 balls – her fourth added to a century in this campaign. Her haul of 514 runs is the second best in the competition. However, the left-hander was trapped lbw by Katie Levick’s leg-spin not long afterwards, leaving Sunrisers 91 for two in the 19th over. From there, Griffith took on the senior role to steer the chase, with one late cut for four off Levick particularly memorable. She also clubbed a Rachel Slater full toss over square-leg for six.By the time she reached her fifty off 64 balls, Sunrisers were all but over the winning line at 181 for two in the 36th over.Grewcock rubber-stamped things with a 54-ball fifty, effectively ending the Diamonds existence given their players will now head to pastures new following the domestic restructure ahead of 2025.Levick trapped Griffith lbw, but it was nothing more than consolatory as Sunrisers get one last dance.

Nottingham Forest to advance deal to sign "incredible" £25m ace this week

Nottingham Forest are now ready to advance on a deal to sign an “incredible” attacking midfielder this week, according to a reliable reporter.

Nottingham Forest chasing multiple targets who could replace Gibbs-White

Having already lost Anthony Elanga, Forest are now doing everything they can to make sure they don’t lose captain and talisman Morgan Gibbs-White as well. Tottenham Hotspur have already triggered Gibbs-White’s release clause this summer, but the Reds have threatened legal action due to Spurs’ move.

Gibbs-White has returned to pre-season training and played in a pre-season game over the weekend, but it remains unclear where his future lies.

Nottingham Forest strike "verbal agreement" with "complete" £35m forward

The Tricky Trees are making progress in their pursuit of an attacker, with an opening bid now in the works.

ByDominic Lund Jul 20, 2025

Therefore, the Tricky Trees are looking at their options, and there are now two names being looked at as possible replacements for the England international. Brentford’s Yoane Wissa has been a target for Forest for a while now, and the BBC’s Sami Mokbel revealed last week that Forest are advancing with their plans to sign Wissa, albeit he is of course more of an out and out forward.

Brentford's YoaneWissacelebrates scoring their first goal

As well as working on a deal for Wissa, according to Football Insider, Forest are now in pole position to sign Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa. The Midlands side are reportedly open to selling the midfielder should they receive an offer between £40-50 million, as Ramsey is said to be unhappy due to his playing time last season.

Nottingham Forest to advance deal to sign "incredible" McAtee

The Premier League side are not stopping at Wissa and Ramsey, as according to The Telegraph’s John Percy, Nottingham Forest are looking to move ahead with their pursuit of James McAtee from Manchester City.

In his update, Percy also states that Forest are not the only team chasing McAtee, as teams from the Premier League and Bundesliga are also interested. It was reported a couple of days ago that Everton are prioritising a move to sign McAtee, as they look to spend £150 million on new arrivals this summer.

As well as Everton, Manchester United have been linked with a shock move for the England under-21 international, who looks set to leave the Etihad Stadium.

McAtee, who has been lauded as being “incredible” by former Sheffield United teammate Oli McBurnie, is out of contract at Man City next summer, and therefore, the Blues may look to cash in on their attacking midfielder, who played just 15 times in the Premier League last season.

Despite only having 12 months left on his contract however, City have still set a price tag of £25 million to sign McAtee this summer.

McAtee was very much on the fringes of the City team last season, but it is probably his two separate spells at Sheffield United that have teams continuing to circle with interest. The 22-year-old scored 12 goals in 67 league games for the Blades.

Ishan Kishan’s return to red-ball cricket continues to gather steam with his selection in the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led Rest of India squad for the Irani Cup, which will be played in Lucknow from October 1 to 5.Kishan recently marked his first appearance in first-class cricket since July 2023 – a period notable for the loss of his BCCI central contract – with a century for India C in the Duleep Trophy.Kishan is one of two wicketkeepers in the squad, with Dhruv Jurel also picked subject to India not selecting him in the XI for their second Test against Bangladesh, which is set to be played in Kanpur from September 27 to October 1.Left-arm quick Yash Dayal and middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan, who are also part of the Test squad, have been picked in the RoI and Mumbai squads respectively, with the same caveat.Related

Mohammed Shami is a notable absentee from the RoI squad. It seems now that his comeback is set to be delayed further, with him not part of the RoI squad.Shami himself is keen to give himself more time in rehab as he works his way back from an ankle surgery.

Diaz upgrade: Liverpool firm favourites to sign "world-class" £100m + star

Liverpool did not know how things would pan out as they stepped into the unknown following Jurgen Klopp’s decision to step down. But the Reds rode the crest of that wave of belief and emerged as Premier League champions with Arne Slot at the helm.

Milos Kerkez, one of Europe’s most promising full-backs, has been signed, and Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz have both completed transfers from Bayer Leverkusen to Merseyside. Giorgi Mamardashvili is Alisson Becker’s new training partner between the sticks.

And, of course, Liverpool have now finalised a £79m deal for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike, who has been described as “the perfect centre-forward” by pundit Owen Hargreaves.

The exciting part is that there’s more still to come. However, this isn’t one-way traffic for the Anfield side: Trent Alexander-Arnold left for Real Madrid many weeks ago; Darwin Nunez is slated to move away.

And Luis Diaz is the focus of a concerted approach from Bayern Munich.

The latest on Luis Diaz's Liverpool future

There’s a lot of noise around Diaz and his Liverpool future, and it feels like he might be set to leave in the coming weeks.

Luis Diaz

Bayern have already seen a £58.5m bid knocked back for the Colombia international, and they are reportedly ready to bid again.

Though Slot won’t want to lose such an important part of his first-team squad, Diaz is 28 and has entered the next-to-the-last year of his contract. A new deal doesn’t appear to be forthcoming.

Liverpool have Cody Gakpo on the left flank, but Diaz has emerged as a shrewd option at centre-forward in Slot’s system, and it might take more than just Ekitike, who is 23, to replace him.

Thus, the spending might not be concluded just yet for the Merseysiders.

Liverpool favourites for Diaz replacement

On Thursday, perhaps the biggest breaking news of the transfer window emerged. Alexander Isak wants to explore a move away from St James’ Park this summer.

Well, according to transfer insider Graeme Bailey, Liverpool have retained their interest in the Newcastle United striker, even after sealing a deal for Ekitike, with a first approach made at the start of last week regarding his availability.

In fact, Arsenal and Chelsea, both keen on the Premier League superstar, have been informed that his preference would be to join Liverpool this summer, should he leave St. James’ Park.

Isak

However, Isak would cost a significant outlay. The Magpies would want him to eclipse the June deal for Wirtz, seeking a British-record £130m fee for his signature.

The 25-year-old has not travelled with Newcastle for their pre-season tour in Asia and is exploring his options as he targets a move to Merseyside.

Why Alexander Isak could help Liverpool replace Diaz

Analyst Raj Chohan declared Isak to have been “the best striker in the world” last season, having scored 27 goals and supplied six assists across 42 matches in all competitions for Newcastle.

The likes of Erling Haaland and Viktor Gyokeres might have scored at a more clinical rate, but the Sweden star is unmatched when it comes to creativity, completeness.

As per FBref, he ranked among the top 16% of centre-forwards across Europe’s top five leagues last season for shot-creating actions, the top 13% for progressive passes, the top 8% for progressive carries and the top 7% for successful take-ons per 90.

It’s accepted that Isak would take Liverpool’s team to the next level, combining with Ekitike and Wirtz and Mohamed Salah to an extraordinary effect. There’s no question that he would be the pick of the goalscoring bunch.

The £120k-per-week striker would definitely mark an upgrade on Diaz, who impressed as a makeshift number nine last season but doesn’t have that natural-born instinct that Isak would bring to the table.

To be sure, Diaz stood out for his electric movements and off-the-ball movements, ranked among the top 3% of strikers across Europe last year for both progressive carries and successful take-ons per 90.

However, in Isak, Liverpool would be signing a new sensation capable of upholding such tactical virtues while concurrently transcending the goal threat that Slot currently has at his disposal from central options, with pundit Alan Shearer noting his “world-class” ball-striking ability.

Furthermore, while Diaz’s haul of 17 goals and eight assists across all competitions in 2024/25 denotes his high-level clinical ability, he enjoyed several purple patches throughout the season, bagging braces against Manchester United and Bournemouth in September, and another against Tottenham Hotspur in December.

Diaz also posted a hat-trick during Liverpool’s 4-0 romp over Bayer Leverkusen Champions League.

Liverpool forward Luis Diaz

Such details are hardly to the South American’s detriment, but they do highlight his proneness to stretches without prolific impact, and in Isak, Liverpool would not have that same problem, for he is one of the most consistently threatening strikers in the business, and creative besides.

If the cogs fall into place and Liverpool truly have a window to strike at Newcastle’s talisman, they must do so. Such a signing would cement Slot’s project as one of the definitive of this generation – worldwide.

Own Isak disaster: Saudi side pursuing Man Utd "genius" with talks held

Manchester United know all about losing a marquee player – and the struggle of trying to replace them – having memorably sold Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid for a then-world record fee in 2009.

With the Portuguese sensation heading for Spain, in came Antonio Valencia, Michael Owen and Gabriel Obertan to try and fill the void. Have United ever truly recovered from that transfer disaster?

Perhaps those at Newcastle United are fearing a similar story, with free-scoring talisman Alexander Isak having outlined his desire to join Premier League champions, Liverpool. The Merseysiders have already seen a £110m bid rejected for the wantaway Swede.

For a side heading back into the Champions League, losing such a player would be a significant blow for the Magpies, with the 25-year-old having netted 44 league goals across the last two seasons combined.

Described as “the most in-form striker” in the world by potential new teammate, Virgil van Dijk, an Isak exit would prove a real setback at St James’ Park. Back at Old Trafford, meanwhile, Ruben Amorim could be facing his own transfer turmoil once again.

Manchester United star attracting Saudi interest

It has become evident who United are desperate to sell this summer, with Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Antony all forming part of the so-called ‘bomb squad’, having been exiled from Amorim’s pre-season plans.

In the case of Antony, the Brazilian has been touted for a return to Real Betis following last term’s profitable loan adventure, although recent reports have indicated that he could also be in line for a reunion with the aforementioned Ronaldo at Saudi Arabian side, Al Nassr.

It isn’t just whom Ronaldo and manager Jorge Jesus have their eye on, however, with Portuguese outlet A Bola reporting that the Pro League outfit are attempting to make their own approach for Red Devils skipper, Bruno Fernandes.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

As per the report, it is claimed that talks have already taken place regarding a possible switch, with Jesus – who managed Fernandes at Sporting – keen to know if the 30-year-old would be keen on a reunion.

It remains to be seen whether that prior association with both Ronaldo and Jesus would encourage the playmaker to change his mind, having already turned down a lucrative move to Al Hilal earlier in the summer.

There was a debate at the time of that prior £80m interest as to whether such a sale would be worth considering for Amorim and co. As it was then, however, the answer should be no.

Why Man Utd must hold firm despite Saudi interest

Returning back to Isak for a moment, it is easy to see why Newcastle have remained firm on their desire to keep hold of the former Real Sociedad man so far. Indeed, last season saw him score 27 times in all competitions, with no other player on Tyneside even reaching double figures.

Isak

That certainly has parallels to the importance of Fernandes back in Manchester, with the former Sporting CP star having led the way with 19 goals in all competitions – eight ahead of Garnacho and Amad in joint-second.

Described as “one of the top players in the world” by Amorim earlier this year, Fernandes also led the way with regard to assists, having chipped in with 19 across all fronts in 2024/25.

Again, only Garnacho and Amad reached double figures in that regard, although both men only reached ten assists – further highlighting just how remarkable a season it was for Fernandes on an individual basis.

Whether it’s operating as part of the midfield two or as a number ten, United’s captain is simply so influential, with former boss Erik ten Hag correct in his assertion that he is simply a “genius”.

Such quality has even been evident again this summer, as if anyone needed a reminder, with Fernandes scoring twice as United saw off West Ham United in the Premier League summer series, a brace that included a stunning strike from range.

The manner in which the £300k-per-week midfielder almost passed the ball into the roof of the net with next to no backlift helped to once again rubberstamp his unique qualities.

Indeed, much like those of a Newcastle persuasion would feel if they receive their £150m valuation for Isak, how do you go about replacing such a superstar talent?

There might come a time when this United side eventually outgrows Fernandes, or even begins to break free from his influence, but heading into 2025/26, they remain a better team with him at the helm.

Much like it would be a disaster for the Magpies to lose Isak with the new season just a matter of weeks away, the Red Devils simply can’t afford to sanction their own high profile exit.
