Nissanka 146*, Chandimal 93 put Sri Lanka in control

The hosts were 43 runs ahead with eight wickets in hand after day two

Stumps On a surface that Bangladesh’s batters had laboured on a day earlier, Sri Lanka’s batters made hay, as a 194-run second-wicket stand between Pathum Nissanka and Dinesh Chandimal took the hosts to a 43-run lead at stumps on day two.At the close, nightwatcher Prabath Jayasuriya was in the middle to keep Nissanka – unbeaten on 146 – company, as light began to fade quickly. Jayasuriya had survived a few nervy moments, including a lbw review late, but Sri Lanka went home the happier of the two sides.Related

Chandimal fell 93 late in the final session, agonisingly short of a 17th Test hundred, attempting a reverse sweep, giving Bangladesh some consolation. The only other wicket had been Lahiru Udara, who had made a meaningful 40 during an 88-run opening stand before being trapped lbw shortly after lunch.In-between those two wickets though, Nissanka was the headline act of another day of Sri Lankan dominance. His was an innings that showed all aspects of the man, from the stoicism which brought him a gritty Test ton on debut, to the belligerence that made him Sri Lanka’s first ever ODI double centurion. With Bangladesh’s final two wickets picked up inside the first hour of play in the morning session, Sri Lanka would have been wary of not succumbing to the same pitfalls that befell the Bangladesh batters, particularly on a wicket that was turning out to not be as batter-friendly as first assumed. But from the very first delivery he faced, an insouciant back foot punch through the covers for four, Nissanka set the tone – and showed that he, and the rest of the Lankan batters, would not be afraid to pounce on any errors. As it turned out there were a fair few of those in the first 10 overs of the Lankan innings, as Sri Lanka racked up nine boundaries in the opening salvo. Their run rate during that time a staggering 5.5.But over the next 11 overs – up until the end of the session – Sri Lanka scored just 28 runs, as Bangladesh led by Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam reeled things back. And so the innings would ebb and flow in a similar vein, as Sri Lanka gave due respect to the bowlers for their stints of disciplined bowling, but jolted into action when anything loose was on offer.Pathum Nissanka celebrates his fourth Test ton•Associated Press

For much of the final session, it was more of the former as Bangladesh kept things very tight for the first hour or so after tea – attempting to frustrate the Sri Lankan batters with a barrage of short deliveries; Nissanka took two blows on the grill so as to attest to this strategy. It was during this period where runs were at their most premium, but both Nissanka and Chandimal showed admirable patience and refused to take the bait. This was primarily down to the fact that Sri Lanka were confident in the knowledge that runs would be available elsewhere at some point. And so it proved. Twenty-eight runs were scored in the first 12 overs after tea. The next 16 overs brought 72 runs at 4.5 an over. The seamers in particular received a brunt of Sri Lanka’s aggression, with neither Ebadot Hossain nor Nahid Rana able to stick to the consistent lines and lengths that had so well served Sri Lanka’s seam pairing. They had bowled a combined 19 overs for 87 runs, and it might have been worse if not for that period in which they peppered the batters with bouncers in an attempt to dry up the runs.Nayeem Hasan, meanwhile, struggled to replicate the nagging lengths that made him such a difficult proposition in Galle. Though Nissanka and Chandimal did their part admirably in not letting the young spinner settle. In just his second over they struck him for a trio of boundaries, punishing anything too short or too full. Of the 43 deliveries Nayeem bowled to the pair, 45 runs were scored. Nayeem though wound up getting the final say on the day, grabbing the wicket of Chandimal, though he’ll need to put forward a better showing tomorrow if Bangladesh are to keep Sri Lanka from batting them out of the game.At the start of the day, Taijul had shown promise with the bat during a 60-ball 33. He had taken on some short bowling from the seamers, while confidently stepping out against the seamers. Such was his confidence, he was even shielding numbers 10 and 11 from the strike.Sri Lanka though, like they had done throughout day one, stuck to their plans, which in this instance involved lots of short stuff to push the batters back, before sneaking in something fuller. It was this strategy that got the first break of the morning, as Ebadot was caught on his crease that he ideally should have been coming forward to.It wasn’t all perfect for Sri Lanka, however, as they added yet another drop to their catalogue of missed chances in the innings – Kamindu Mendis spilling a low chance off Taijul at mid-off. But Sonal Dinusha returned shortly after, and took just three deliveries to get the last man, as Taijul skied one for mid-off to safely pouch.

Everton's "serious" talent is in danger of becoming the new Cenk Tosun

Everton’s 2–1 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday night was a dramatic statement.

Jack Grealish struck in the 93rd minute to seal the win, ending Palace’s club-record 19-match unbeaten run.

Yet for large periods of the contest, Everton were second-best, struggling to assert themselves in attack.

David Moyes, who had urged Grealish to score more before the fixture, clearly had stern words at half-time as his side improved their tempo and urgency in the second half.

The first-half struggles were compounded by a goal from Daniel Munoz in the 37th minute, giving Palace the lead as they sought to make it three Premier League wins in a row.

It was Palace’s first defeat since a 5–0 loss to Newcastle in April, and there were signs they might have felt the after-effects of travelling to Poland for a midweek Europa League tie against Dynamo Kyiv.

Despite the early sluggishness, Everton’s comeback ensured they now sit eighth in the table with three wins and eleven points.

However, Moyes’ team must quickly recover as they travel to Manchester City after the international break, while Palace host Bournemouth at Selhurst Park.

The early attacking ineffectiveness will remind supporters of one player who previously led the line for the Toffees – a striker once burdened with expectations that proved difficult to meet.

Struggles up top will remind fans of Cenk Tosun

Everton fans will recall Cenk Tosun, who joined the club in 2018 for £27m with the expectation of replacing the goal threat lost when Romelu Lukaku departed for Manchester United.

He was Sam Allardyce’s first signing at Goodison Park and made his debut in a 4–0 loss away at Tottenham Hotspur. Tosun scored 11 goals in 61 appearances for Everton, also registering six assists.

His first goal came in a 2–1 loss to Burnley, and despite criticism from fans, he received support from his manager throughout his tenure.

He helped Everton finish eighth in the 2017/18 season, though under Marco Silva he lost his starting spot to Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Eventually, he returned to Besiktas on loan before signing permanently in 2022, and now, at 34, plays for Fenerbahçe.

Tosun’s Everton career serves as a cautionary tale. Talented but inconsistent, he struggled to live up to expectations.

The team’s first-half inability to create chances against Palace is reminiscent of the frustrations fans experienced watching Tosun – a forward with potential, yet unable to consistently influence matches.

Everton man in danger of becoming Tosun 2.0

That comparison brings attention to Thierno Barry, Everton’s new £27.6m summer signing from Villarreal.

The French U21 international is physically imposing at 6 foot 5in, having been described as a “serious No.9 prospect” by analyst Ben Mattinson.

Last season, he scored 11 goals and provided four assists, while dominating in the air in La Liga.

He ranks in the 87th percentile for aerial duels (3.84 per 90), winning nearly two-thirds of his contests in the penalty area.

Barry is a striker who can dominate the box and stretch defensive lines, ranking in the 74th percentile for progressive carries (1.70 per 90) and 62nd percentile for successful take-ons (0.77 per 90).

However, his adaptation to the Premier League remains a work in progress.

Moyes has acknowledged that Barry will need time to adjust to the league’s intensity and pace, particularly as Everton increasingly deploy a possession-based system tailored to his technical strengths.

Against Crystal Palace, Barry struggled to make an impact. Substituted at half-time for Beto, his stats underline a difficult introduction: 19 touches, eight passes (four accurate), zero shots, two dribbles (zero successful), and ten times losing possession, as per Sofascore.

Despite these figures, there are signs of potential.

His profile could allow him to become the reliable target man Everton hope for, provided he adapts to the rhythm of the Premier League.

Fans will hope Barry does not follow the path of Tosun, a player who arrived with high expectations but rarely produced consistently.

With time, support, and integration into Moyes’ system, Barry has the tools to grow into the player Everton envisioned.

His performance against Palace, while subdued, could serve as a stepping stone – a first lesson in navigating the physical and tactical demands of top-flight football.

Everton’s comeback illustrates the squad’s resilience, but their first-half attacking struggles and Barry’s adaptation period highlight ongoing challenges.

Moyes will need to balance patience with urgency, helping his striker find form before upcoming fixtures against elite sides, ensuring that Everton’s new investment delivers the return expected from a £27.6m forward.

CAMPEONATO BRASILEIRO 1977

Aí o Tricolor virou a série, acertando as três últimas cobranças enquanto o Galo errou duas.

Cost £1.7m, now worth 252% more: Celtic have struck gold on their new Rogic

The four week long period between this international break and the next, containing seven fixtures, could be season-defining for Celtic.

Having yielded just a solitary point from their first two Europa League outings, Brendan Rodgers’ team really need to get some points on the board against Sturm Graz at home and then Midtjylland in Herning, because the fixtures only get tougher after that.

Meantime, on the domestic front, the Hoops will visit current Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts the Sunday after next, an eagerly anticipated clash at Tynecastle, before the small matter of an Old Firm League Cup semi-final at Hampden a week later.

Given their underwhelming form so far, supporters are hoping to see players come to the fore and put their best foot forward, but which summer signing is showing early signs of a certain Tom Rogic?

Tom Rogic's Celtic career in numbers

Few players in modern Celtic history remain as beloved as Rogic.

After arriving from Central Coast Mariners in January 2013, the Australian made 272 appearances in hoops, scoring 46 goals and providing 51 assists.

He netted six times against Rangers, while also scoring, arguably, the most famous goal of the club’s recent history, firing home a stoppage-time winner in the 2017 Scottish Cup Final against Aberdeen to secure the invincible treble that bookended Rodgers’ first season in charge.

Affectionately known as the Wizard of Oz, this nickname encapsulates Rogic’s style of play, possessing the clichéd ‘wand of a left foot’, while Rodgers similarly labelled him a “magician”.

Meantime, then teammate Josip Juranović asserted that the Australian “is little Messi”, adding “he’s one of the best players I have played with”.

Celtic's Tom Rogic.

When he departed at the end of the 2021/22 campaign, Rogic received an emotional standing ovation from the Celtic faithful as genuine and heartfelt recognition for all the magical moments he had provided.

He cited wanting the move closer to home as the reason for his departure and, technically, he did that by about 280 of the 10,550 miles, joining West Bromwich Albion as a free agent, albeit he made only 23 appearances for the Baggies before retiring at the age of 30.

When Rogic arrived as a 20-year-old from an A-League club very few in Glasgow would ever have heard of, surely no one could’ve foreseen just how impactful he would be at the club, so is a current squad member set for a similar trajectory?

Celtic's next Tom Rogic

Supporters remain generally furious with the board’s inactivity this summer, believing that transfer deals were completed too late, costing Celtic a place in the Champions League.

Well, considering Marcelo Saracchi, Michel-Ange Balikwisha, Sebastian Tounekti and Kelechi Iheanacho all arrived after the play-off defeat to Kairat, they may have a point.

One new recruit who did join all the way back in June, instantaneously establishing himself as a first-choice starter, is Benjamin Nygren, and what an absolute bargain he could prove to be.

Into the final few months of his contract with Nordsjælland, the Hoops managed to sign the Sweden international for a reported fee of £1.7m, while Football Transfers believe his current value to be around £6m, having already increased just 13 appearances into his Celtic career.

The table below emphasises his importance to the team so far this season.

As the table documents, Nygren ranks first for a wide variety of attacking metrics this season, thereby very much part of Rodgers’ first-choice midfield trio, despite the fact many forecast he was joining to replace Nicolas Kühn on the right-wing.

The Swede, who was an unused substitute for both of the Blågult’s World Cup qualifying defeats this week, scored his fourth goal for Celtic against Motherwell last time out, having opened his account for the club against Aberdeen in August.

Following that victory at Pittodrie, Rodgers praised Nygren’s “excellent” performance, noting that “his intuition is to get in the box and score goals”, as Rogic often did, connecting with Kieran Tierney’s low cross to fire past Dimitar Mitov.

Meantime, following a 5-1 dismantling of Northern Ireland in March, international teammate Alexander Isak described Nygren as “fearless”, concluding that “playing with a winger like that who is able to provide good crosses can only be beneficial for someone like me”.

That is high praise from the most-expensive player in British football history, so the £1.7m Celtic paid to secure the 24-year-old’s signature looks like a genuine bargain.

Thus, supporters will hope he remains in Glasgow’s East End for nigh on a decade too, as Rogic did, the last player at the club who could boast possessing an equally majestic left foot.

Cost £0, now worth more than Tounekti: Celtic hit gold on "phenomenal" star

Sebastian Tounekti has made an impressive start to life at Celtic, but a “prolific” attacker who arrived for free has a higher estimated market value.

Owen five-for sends Unicorns to their first defeat of MLC 2025

Unicorns are still on top of the table, but Freedom now have the same points as them and are only behind on net-run rate

San Francisco Unicorns are not unbeaten in MLC 2025 anymore, and though they are still right up there on the points table, it’s only on net run-rate now, after Mitchell Owen’s five-for helped Washington Freedom hand them a 12-run defeat in Dallas on Saturday.Matthew Short, the captain, had another good day with the bat as Unicorns started their chase of 170, a smallish target looking at the way the games have gone so far. But he had to go it alone at the start, with Unicorns getting to 52 for 1 in the powerplay despite Finn Allen and Jake Fraser-McGurk contributing very little. In Sanjay Krishnamurthi, Short found a slightly more enterprising partner, but when Short became the third man out in the 11th over, he had scored 67 of the 97 on the scoreboard. But with just 73 to get, Short hadn’t left his middle-order batters with a lot to do.That’s when Owen the bowler came to the fore. Short was his first wicket, in his first over, and Owen sent back Hassan Khan and Romario Shepherd off consecutive balls in his next. And in no time, with Jack Edwards and Ian Holland chipping in with wickets, Unicorns were 113 for 7 in the 16th over.Xavier Bartlett ran through the Washington Freedom top order•Sportzpics for MLC

Owen wasn’t done. Returning for the 19th, he sent back tailenders Haris Rauf and Brody Couch too, to finish with 5 for 17, leaving Unicorns with 27 to get from the last over. Despite Jahmar Hamilton’s unbeaten 18-ball 31, Saurabh Netravalkar closed the game out, conceding 14 from his six balls. When Freedom opted to bat, they wouldn’t have expected to be down at 13 for 3 by the end of the third over, all thanks to Xavier Bartlett, who ran through the top three of Owen (a first-ball duck), Rachin Ravindra and Andries Gous.Glenn Maxwell didn’t last long either, but the resistance came from Edwards and Glenn Phillips, who added 71 for the fifth wicket, even though they took 64 balls to do it. Phillips hadn’t really changed gears till that point, but did immediately after as he and Obus Pienaar added 31 in 12 balls, and, after Phillips fell for 58 in 39 balls, Pienaar added 37 in 16 balls in his unbroken seventh-wicket stand with Mukhtar Ahmed. Both teams now have six wins from seven games, but Unicorns still have a big advantage on NRR: 2.016 to 0.603.

He won the Champions League at Inter Milan as well as lifting four Serie A titles and three Italian Cups, starring under Jose Mourinho.

19 Eric Gerets

Eric Gerets actually began his amateur career as a striker before turning professional with Standard Liege and would end his playing days as one of the best right-backs, recognised by being nominated for the Ballon d’Or on numerous occasions.
