Sports minister steps in after CSA internal rifts heighten

South Africa’s World Cup ambitions could be damaged by the ongoing spat between CSA’s chief executive Gerald Majola and the body’s president, Dr Mtutuzeli Nyoka, according to sports minister Fikile Mbalula

South Africa’s World Cup ambitions could be damaged by the ongoing spat between CSA’s chief executive Gerald Majola and the body’s president, Dr Mtutuzeli Nyoka, according to sports minister Fikile Mbalula. “Anything that has to do with internal politics will have a negative impact on our campaign,” he said at a press conference in Centurion on Sunday. The minister met with the CSA board sans Nyoka, who was invited but chose not to attend because he had other plans, during the fifth ODI between South Africa and India at SuperSport Park to flesh out recent developments in the tussle between the top brass, especially because of its timing. “Government is concerned and shocked that on the eve of the important ICC calendar event the sport of cricket in the country is thrown into disarray by personality issues,” Mbalula said. The row between Majola and Nyoka intensified last week when, on Wednesday, Nyoka was served notice of a motion of no confidence being tabled against him. The presidents of all 11 CSA affiliates signed the document which was delivered to Nyoka in the form of a letter. On Thursday, Nyoka called Majola a liar during an interview with Johannesburg-based TalkRadio702. Nyoka said Majola had deceived him about bonuses that were paid out after IPL2.”Gerald lied to me, he misled me,” Nyoka said on air. “He’s the only person who told me, ‘Listen, I know you might have doubts about when and whether I’ve taken money or not. I want to relieve you of that burden and show you this document I’ve signed with the IPL. There is nothing here that says anything about me receiving millions’.”Majola and 39 other CSA staff members collectively received R4.7 million (US $7671, 428) in bonuses paid out after the IPL in 2010 and the Champions Trophy in 2009. CSA’s auditors, Deloitte, found a discrepancy in their financial statements in August last year and a commission of inquiry was put in place to investigate. The commission was initially supposed to be an external one, chaired by former Chief Justice Pius Langa, but was moved internally, something Nyoka was not in favour of. The internal commission, chaired by vice-president AK Khan, cleared Majola of any wrongdoing.Nyoka has indicated that he believes the internal commission was a cover-up and lacked credibility and said so while on radio. “The issue is not going to go away,” he said. “They will never be able to bury the truth. Sport belongs to the public. Cricket is not a secret society. We are not in Stalin’s Russia.”Majola’s only response has been to say that he is consulting with his lawyer about the allegation made by Nyoka on radio. CSA have rallied behind their chief executive, issuing a release of “reassurance” on Thursday. South Africa captain Graeme Smith came out in praise of Majola on the same day. “Gerald Majola has always backed the team to the hilt in every possible way,” Smith said. “The players have great faith in him and he must take his share of the credit for the successes we have enjoyed over the last period of time.”It was this comment by Smith that attracted the attention of the sports ministry. A report in the said Mbalula told a commercial radio station that Smith should stay out of “politics” and concentrate on the cricket. Mbalula said at his press conference on Sunday that Smith made the statement in response to a “question that came directly to him” and that he was “simply stating his support for the leadership.” Despite being satisfied with Smith’s reasoning for answering the question, Mbalula said that “it is advisable that the players do not get involved.”Mbalula also cautioned against panic on the state of the game in the country, saying that the “house is not coming down” and the problems in CSA are “not insurmountable.” The ministry’s involvement in the matter is set to continue and they will meet with CSA again on February 12. “CSA will present the ministry with a report on the actions of the president as well as the commission of inquiry that looked into the bonus scandal,” Mbalula said. That is also the date set for CSA’s special general meeting to finalise the proposed motion of no confidence in Nyoka, who had earlier told the that if he received written notice of a vote of no confidence, he would step down in a “dignified manner”, but has shown any sign of resigning since getting the letter.

ICC criticism of Dhoni out of line – India

The BCCI has objected to ICC general manager Dave Richardson’s comments about MS Dhoni after the India captain questioned the Decision Review System

N Srinivasan has sent a letter to the ICC objecting to comments Dave Richardson made about MS Dhoni•AFP

The BCCI has objected to ICC general manager Dave Richardson’s comments about MS Dhoni after the India captain questioned the Decision Review System (DRS) in the wake of India’s tied game against England in Bangalore. It has also reiterated its concerns over the use of the system in the ongoing World Cup and says the DRS’s “inadequacy has been exposed” during the tournament. In a letter to ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat, and released to the media, N Srinivasan, the board secretary and president-elect, said that “for ICC’s representative to criticise a player for his post-match press conference while the World Cup is being played [is] tantamount to pressuring the player. Mr. Richardson has no right to do so. BCCI has strong reservations about the statement made by Mr. Richardson. He should be instructed not to react in this fashion.”Richardson made the comments after Dhoni had called the system an “adulteration” of technology with human judgement in the aftermath of a reprieve for Ian Bell. Dhoni had asked for a review of a not-out decision, and television replays appeared to show the ball hitting a forward-stretching Ian Bell low on the pad with the ball in line with middle stump. Bell even began to walk off the field, but umpire Billy Bowden did not declare him out because the distance between the point of impact and the stumps was shown to be 2.5m.Richardsontold the Indian news channel, , that Dhoni should be aware of the rules before passing judgement. “There are a set of rules along with the Hawk-Eye to assist in making the decision when UDRS is implemented … Most of the time, a player is not fully aware of all the rules. If MS Dhoni is made aware of the specifications of these rules, then I am sure that he will accept the decision that was made.”Lorgat also defended the system, telling ESPNcricinfo that Dhoni’s characterisation of it wasn’t exactly accurate. The ICC’s DRS rule pertaining to the Process of Consultation, No. 3.3 (i), states that if a ‘not out’ decision is being reviewed on the ‘point of impact’ issue, the third umpire must tell the on-field umpire whether the ball is past 2.5m or not and then pass on the following information: the distance from the wickets of the point of impact with the batsman, the approximate distance from the point of pitching to the point of impact, and whether the ball is predicted to the hit the stumps. According to the explanation given on the ICC’s website, along with the 2.5m rule, should the distance between point of pitching and point of impact with the pad be less than 40cm, “the umpires are not obliged to follow the normal rules for using Hawkeye to determine whether the batsman is out or not and shall have a discretion in determining whether or not to overturn their original not out decision.”The letter also said that the BCCI had been consistently opposed to the use of the review system, and that its inadequacy had been exposed at the World Cup, specifically citing the need of the 2.5m rule as proof of its failing. “ICC in consultation with Hawk-Eye formed playing conditions which specifies when the umpire can rely on Hawk-Eye and when he cannot. This itself is an admission on the question of the reliability of the system, including ball tracking technology.”

Former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe has resigned from the New Zealand board’s cricket committee citing conflicts of interest, but said his decision was not linked to NZC’s delay in naming Daniel Vettori’s successor as the team’s captain.”It’s got nothing to do with indecision [on the part of NZC],” Crowe told . “There’s just a few conflicts of interest there and it’s just not the right timing for me.”Crowe joined in December as a non-Board member of the committee that was established to provide advice and make recommendations to the NZC in the aftermath of the 0-4 drubbing in the ODI series in Bangladesh. The committee also includes Shane Bond, Gerard Gillespie and NZC board members Stephen Boock, Chris Moller, Rob Hart and Sir John Hansen.”There seems to be a little bit of bad luck with regards to my best mate Mark Greatbatch last December, and now Ross Taylor who is a great friend,”Crowe said. “I’m just best being on the outer I think.”Greatbatch was replaced by John Wright as New Zealand coach in December. Crowe had previously worked with Greatbatch as a batting advisor for the national side and had also been part of programme in which players chose their own mentors, and worked with Taylor among others in that capacity.NZC is yet to name a successor to Vettori though Taylor, who is the current vice-captain, and former captain Brendon McCullum are believed to be the frontrunners for the post.

Taylor's ton keeps leaders at bay

Chris Taylor’s first County Championship century since September 2009 led Gloucestershire to 302 for 6

04-May-2011
ScorecardChris Taylor’s first County Championship century since September 2009 led Gloucestershire to 302 for 6 on the opening day of their Division Two match with Middlesex at Bristol.Taylor, fresh from an unbeaten 100 in the one-day victory over the Unicorns on Monday, struck 13 fours in his 147-ball innings of 117. Opener Hamish Marshall (62) got the innings off to a good start, while Will Gidman put on 162 for the sixth wicket with Taylor and was unbeaten on 67 when play ended 10 overs early due to bad light.Toby Roland-Jones was the most successful of the Middlesex attack with 3 for 60. Tim Murtagh took two wickets and Corey Collymore gained late reward when he had Taylor caught behind.Second-placed Gloucestershire went into the game 20 points behind Middlesex, who had won all three of their games. After Alex Gidman won the toss, Marshall and Ian Cockbain had to negotiate some testing new-ball bowling from Murtagh and Collymore.Only 14 runs had been scored in 12 overs when Cockbain, who had scored just one off 36 deliveries, edged Murtagh to wicketkeeper John Simpson. Marshall and Richard Coughtrie upped the tempo with a stand of 62 in 11 overs, before Coughtrie was taken at second slip by Ollie Rayner off Roland-Jones.That brought New Zealander Kane Williamson to the middle for his Championship debut, but he was dismissed for 15 in the second over after lunch when he was caught behind off Murtagh.Taylor helped Marshall add 35 before the loss of two wickets in three deliveries left the home side in trouble on 138 for five. Marshall was the first to go when he edged Roland-Jones to Rayner at second slip, having hit 10 fours. Then Alex Gidman was bowled by a superb delivery from Roland-Jones that uprooted his off stump. However, that proved to be Middlesex’s last success for 42 overs, as Taylor and Will Gidman put together a partnership that was heavily laden with boundaries.Taylor had seven fours in his 63-ball half-century and had struck a further five by the time he brought up his 125-ball hundred with two to backward square off Gareth Berg. It was his first century since he scored 111 against Surrey at Bristol 20 months ago.Taylor’s fine innings finally ended in the 86th over when he chased a wide delivery from Collymore and snicked a catch to Simpson. Will Gidman hit 10 fours in his 131-ball half-century and had cracked three more boundaries before umpires Mark Benson and Nick Cook decided the light was too poor to continue play.
