England on top despite Duminy rally

England put the brouhaha with Kevin Pietersen behind them, temporarily at least, with the third Test initially taking shape in their favour at Lord’s

The Report by David Hopps16-Aug-2012

England put the brouhaha with Kevin Pietersen behind them, temporarily at least, with the third Test initially taking shape in their favour at Lord’s as they fought for the series-levelling victory that they need to prevent South Africa seizing their position as the No 1-ranked Test side in the world.England’s captain, Andrew Strauss, whose statistical achievement in reaching his 100th Test had been largely submerged by the daily Pietersen soap opera, found comfort the moment that he donned his whites and took to the field again in a Lord’s milieu that gives him a powerful sense of belonging. He was even caught laughing before the start of play with his coach, Andy Flower, and in recent days that has been a novelty. This was not an England resurgence, but it was an England recovery of sorts, in which James Anderson led ther way on a day offering encouraging degrees of swing. South Africa lost half their side for 105, but they resisted gamely thereafter and Vernon Philander, whose reputation as an allrounder had previously permeated only South African domestic cricket, will resume the second day only four runs short of his maiden Test half-century. The day finished 14 balls early because of a floodlight failure – extensive enough for Lord’s to be deemed innocent. Were England eventually to succeed at Lord’s, the rush to victory would be accompanied by an even greater rush to conclusions. Whatever the rights and wrongs of the Pietersen rumpus, England’s pre-match assertions of the team ethic and the need for unity in his absence had an immediate effect. For the first time in the series, England had purpose in the field. That they prospered, though, owed much to good fortune – including the most inexplicable umpiring decision of the summer; Steven Finn’s dismissal of Jacques Kallis, a not-out decision that was reversed after England made use of the DRS system, understandably left South Africa aghast.Kallis had made 3 when Finn’s appeal for a catch down the leg side was turned down by umpire Kumar Dharmasena. England referred and their suspicions that the ball had flicked the glove were upheld. But Rod Tucker, the third umpire, overlooked the fact that Kallis’ bottom hand had been withdrawn from the bat when the ball made contact with his glove. The fault was not with DRS, which seemed to give Tucker all the evidence he needed to uphold Dharmasena’s not-out decision, but with what seemed to be a defective conclusion based on the clear evidence available. There was no cause to override Dharmasena’s decision. To interpret this as proof of technology’s inadequacies is a wilful misinterpretation.South Africa’s frustrations over Kallis’ dismissal were deepened by the fact that Alviro Petersen had fallen in similar fashion in Finn’s previous over. Again the ball strayed down the leg side, again Finn had the good fortune to brush the glove, but again the bottom hand had been withdrawn from the bat by the time contact was made. The only difference on this occasion was that Petersen did not have the presence of mind to review the decision – an oversight he recognised as he saw the big-screen replay as he left the field.Finn, preferred to Tim Bresnan on his home turf, had 3 for 22 in seven overs by lunch, but he operated below the standards he set in the ODI series against Australia and West Indies. His best moment came when he brought one back down the slope to bowl Hashim Amla between bat and pad.It was a good toss for England to lose. They would not have dared to insert South Africa, but the weather was unsettled enough to encourage their fast bowlers. As Yohan Blake, Jamaica’s silver medallist over 100 and 200m in the London Olympics, rang the five-minute bell, there was cause to expect England to be fast out of the blocks.England had won six of their last seven Tests at Lord’s. South Africa, however, have not lost here since their readmission to Test cricket and had dominated England with disciplined percentage cricket in the first two Tests.Graeme Smith, South Africa’s rock, fell in the ninth over, another complex decision as England needed to review Dharmasena’s not-out decision to prove that the ball had struck Smith’s outside edge as well as his bat scratching the ground.Only AB de Villiers fell between lunch and tea. England lost their second umpiring review when de Villiers was 27, James Anderson failing with a marginal lbw decision as the ball did not quite hit in line, but de Villiers had not added to his score when he drove at Anderson and was held by Alastair Cook at third slip.Graeme Swann, left out at Headingley, had bowled 52 overs against South Africa in the first Test at The Oval without reward, hindered by a long-standing elbow complaint. He returned, initially at the Nursery End, which did not help his turn, with a Jim Laker hairstyle and, uncharacteristically, a Jim Laker solemnity. The wicket of Jacques Rudolph for 42 in the third over after tea, a poor stroke as he tried to work the ball into the leg side, left him four wickets adrift of England’s most celebrated offspinner.JP Duminy grew from cautious beginnings to continue South Africa’s resistance. There are times when a new ball takes wickets merely by the size of its reputation and his demise was one of those moments. He was 61 when England took the second new ball immediately at 235 for 6 and failed to add to that score as he fell to the third delivery, by Anderson. It was a wide trundler, a ball of such little consequence that the shabbiest ball in a club kit bag could not have performed more inadequately and Duminy stretched to under-edge it to the wicketkeeper. It was a stretch was so unforgiveable that his next stretch should have been in Wormwood Scrubs.Even Lord’s itself then turned on South Africa, to no avail. The failure of two of the floodlights made batting conditions a little murkier (it also removed power for the media, which the ECB has yearned to do for more than a week) and MCC members variously stood up behind the arm to straighten a copy of and don a lightweight jacket in a crafty bid for late wickets. When Steyn was struck on the chest, failing to pick up a short ball from Finn, and protested vehemently, enough was enough.

Boa impressão para Felipão e torcida: Arthur Cabral e o gol no futuro time

Vim defender a minha equipe.

Malan excels as Bopara fails

A century from Dawid Malan acted as the catalyst for a Middlesex victory by 54 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method against Essex

A century from Dawid Malan acted as the catalyst for a Middlesex victory by 54 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method in their Clydesdale Bank 40 encounter against Essex. But there was no joy with the bat for Ravi Bopara as he became one of three victims for 20 year-old Gurjit Sandhu, who was making his debut in the competition.England allrounder Bopara was given the opportunity by the ECB to play in this match in the hope of rediscovering his form after a recent period of absence from the game for personal reasons, but he had scored only two when he edged a lifting delivery from the young pace bowler behind. In contrast, the 24 year-old Malan played splendidly, deploying controlled and clean hitting aggression in his innings of 134 from 108 deliveries out of a total of 288 all out after he had lost fellow opener Joe Denly without a run on the board.Malan, though, was soon issuing notice of intent, striking four successive deliveries from paceman Maurice Chambers to the boundary and he found an admirable ally in Gareth Berg who came to the crease with the home side 90 for 3. The pair added 132 in 20 overs before Berg edged a ball from Bopara, having struck 61 from 58 balls, to give wicketkeeper James Foster his third catch of the innings. But Malan continued to dictate. His century arrived from 89 balls and by the time he was caught by Chambers at deep long-on, he had hit three sixes and 12 fours. Some shoddy work in the field by the visitors and the concession of six penalty runs for slow-over-rate left them with a challenging target for victory. Their hopes were boosted by a fourth-wicket partnership of 102 in 16 overs involving Tom Westley and Owais Shah who both completed half-centuries. Westley hit 68, his third fifty in his last five CB40 innings, while Shah returned to his former stomping ground with 53 but both were dismissed in successive Paul Stirling overs. With 10 overs remaining, 120 further runs were required with five wickets intact but the task proved well beyond the visitors as the run-rate steadily increased while they also had to contend with fading light. And it was the gloom that brought about a premature end with 29 balls remaining when umpires Rob Bailey and Steve Garratt called off proceedings with Essex 198 for 9 and leaving the impressive Sandhu as the most successful Middlesex bowler with figures of 3 for 28 from six overs.

Smith, Amla help South Africa sprint away from Australia

Hurried along at a cracking pace by Hashim Amla and Graeme Smith, South Africa’s lead over Australia is already a vast 292 runs at the end of day two in Perth

When the critical moment of the series arrived, South Africa grabbed it with a ruthlessness entirely befitting the world’s No. 1 team. On the day they had hoped for a valedictory Perth century from Ricky Ponting to capitalise on a strong opening to the match, Australia were instead dismantled with the bat and run ragged in the field. Hurried along at a cracking pace by Hashim Amla and Graeme Smith, South Africa’s lead is already a vast 292 runs.Dale Steyn joined Smith and Amla in turning in a command performance, and the hosts’ response was limp, with only the isolated batting resistance of Matthew Wade and a pair of startling catches standing out amid mediocre batting and worse bowling. Ponting’s rapid exit was a sombre subplot as South Africa’s bowlers clambered all over Australia’s batsmen, and Michael Clarke’s team were simply overwhelmed in the final session by the poise and aggression of Amla and Smith. Much like Steyn, they identified the time to strike with fearful precision.United when Alviro Petersen fell shortly after tea to Mitchell Johnson’s thrilling return catch, Smith and Amla tucked into poor spells from John Hastings and Mitchell Starc in particular. While Smith enjoyed a series of deliveries directed heedlessly at his pads, Amla toyed with Australia’s bowling and fielding placings by moving across the crease with impunity to flick to the legside or drive handsomely through the off. He finished the day only a run shy of a century in the final session.Smart stats

Australia’s total of 163 is their lowest in the first innings in Perth since January 1993, when they scored 119 against a West Indies attack of Curtly Ambrose, Ian Bishop and Courtney Walsh. In 19 Tests at the WACA between these two matches, Australia had never scored less than 200.

For only the second time in the last 75 years, and the fourth time ever, each of Australia’s top seven batsmen scored less than 14 in their first innings of a Test.

The 178-run stand between Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla, which came off 153 balls, is the third-fastest 150-plus stand recorded in Test cricket.

Dale Steyn is one of only two bowlers to dismiss Michael Clarke seven times in Tests. Ishant Sharma is the other. Clarke is one of four batsmen to be dismissed seven times by Steyn.

Since the beginning of 2007, only once has Amla had a spell of more than four successive innings without at least a half-century in Tests.

South Africa’s 414 for 4 in 2008 is the highest winning fourth-innings total in a Perth Test.

Smith too deserved a century, but was thwarted in his quest by a hook he did not quite control and another stunning catch, this time by Nathan Lyon. Whatever succour Australia took from this moment was to be greatly reduced when Lyon appeared to lose his footing and spilled a simpler chance offered by Jacques Kallis shortly after – the drop more representative of the hosts’ foggy approach to the evening’s play, which completed perhaps their worst day’s cricket at home since Clarke became captain. It was almost as though Australia’s players had been overcome by melancholy at the events of the morning. Granted an opening by David Warner’s poor stroke to Dale Steyn’s first ball of the day, the visitors produced bowling of the highest quality on a WACA ground pitch that had quickened overnight to rumble the hosts for 163.Quieter than usual for most of this series, Steyn pounced on what may come to be remembered as this series’ most pivotal day, moving the ball at high pace and conjuring arguably the ball of the series to find the outside edge of Australia’s captain and batting cornerstone Clarke. Vernon Philander contributed the wicket of Ponting, his skidding trajectory winning a second lbw of the innings on a surface not lending itself to such dismissals with its steep bounce.Robin Peterson extracted a measure of revenge for a pair of earlier sixes by defeating Wade after lunch, and the left-arm spinner added the wickets of Mitchell Johnson and Hastings to round up the innings and more than justify his selection.Resuming at 2 for 33, Warner and the nightwatchman Lyon were charged with setting a foundation for Ponting and others. Warner kicked his commission away however with a flat-footed swish at his first sight of Steyn, an edge clearly audible though the opener compounded his error by calling haltingly for a review. With no strongly contradicting evidence available on replays, Richard Kettleborough’s finger was raised a second time.Ponting nearly shovelled his first ball to midwicket, but found a sharp single to get off the mark in his penultimate Test innings. That brought Lyon on strike to face Steyn, and first ball he was turned around by a well-pitched outswinger and the snick was held in the gully.Willed on by a capacity crowd and countless television watchers, Ponting swivelled into one pull shot from Philander, the stroke looking attractive but not timed with the precision of his younger days. It was to be his only signature moment, as Philander whirred one down the line of middle and off to pin Ponting lbw. For what seemed reasons as much emotional as tactical, Clarke unwisely allowed Ponting to refer the decision, which confirmed the right call had been made, thus stripping the hosts of their remaining review.Dominant as he has been this year, an outstanding delivery was required to dismiss Clarke, and Steyn duly provided it. Angling into the stumps before bending away treacherously late, Clarke did well to edge it, and South Africa rejoiced Australia’s punch-drunk tally of 6 for 45. Wade and Hussey resisted for a time, the wicketkeeper taking the attacker’s role while the senior batsman tried to weather a hostile spell from Morne Morkel.Wade’s innings showed that runs could most certainly be scored, but he lost Hussey not long before lunch as he pushed indeterminately at a Morkel delivery from around the wicket and presented a slips catch to Smith. Hastings fought out the remaining minutes of the morning, and after lunch gave Wade some stout company. The stand was worth 40 when Wade miscalculated against Peterson, ending an innings that might have tilted the match had it been allowed to continue for another hour. Johnson’s defeat was the result of subtle variations in flight from Peterson and a not-so-subtle response from the batsman, while Hastings was last out when Petersen took a steepling chance and then regathered it after stepping momentarily over the boundary rope at long off.The opening overs of South Africa’s innings featured a couple of nervy moments for Smith in particular, but all 10 wickets remained intact when tea was called. Alviro Petersen would be lost shortly after the resumption when he popped up a bouncer off glove or bat handle that Johnson did wonderfully well to catch after an athletic chase and dive, but the rest was to be a procession. South Africa are not quite hoisting the ICC’s Test Championship mace yet, but after this day’s domination they may as well be.
