BCB braces for 'slim chance' of ranking jolt

After meeting ICC officials regarding Bangladesh’s 2017 Champions Trophy qualification, BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury has said the board is considering a contingency plan should there be any late changes in their ODI ranking

Bangladesh have a slim chance of slipping out of the top eight in the ODI rankings and losing their place in the Champions Trophy•AFP

After meeting ICC officials regarding Bangladesh’s 2017 Champions Trophy qualification, BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury has said the board is considering a contingency plan should there be any late changes in their ODI ranking.Bangladesh, who have 93 points, sit seventh on the table with West Indies five points below them at No 8 and Pakistan a point below West Indies at No 9. In August, West Indies and Pakistan will be involved in a tri-series also featuring Zimbabwe.Nizamuddin’s statement comes exactly 24 hours after BCB director Jalal Yunus said that the the system of organising bilateral series had “gone bad” since the ICC stopped getting involved in the Future Tours Programme.Nizamuddin was BCB’s only representative in the ICC annual meeting in Barbados last week where he discussed Bangladesh’s ranking situation in light of West Indies confirming their participation in the tri-series in Zimbabwe. He said only a specific set of results for Pakistan in their five-match against Sri Lanka and in the tri-series in Zimbabwe would disturb Bangladesh in the rankings.”We are currently at No 7 in the ICC ODI rankings so we are hoping to participate in the next Champions Trophy,” Nizamuddin said. “Pakistan and West Indies are below us in the present ODI rankings. Matches between Pakistan and West Indies will have some effect in our ranking but because there is a five-point gap between teams ranked No 7 and 8, we think that chances are very slim for them.”We can’t just have a back-up plan. We need to find a team that is free and willing to play. We are still working on [a back-up plan]. If there is a need, we will proceed accordingly.”In April this year, BCB president Nazmul Hassan had spoken about Bangladesh hosting a four-nation tournament involving West Indies, Zimbabwe and Pakistan, to be tentatively held in November. ESPNcricinfo has learned that Bangladesh changed tack about participating in this tournament after they had beaten Pakistan 3-0 and moved up to No. 8, a few weeks after Nazmul’s statement. When asked whether Bangladesh were linked to this tri-series, Nizamuddin only said Bangladesh should focus on playing against teams such as South Africa, ranked fourth with 112 points, rather than lower-ranked teams.”We have to keep in mind that in terms of ranking, the easy calculation is that when a higher-ranked team beats a lower ranked team, there isn’t much variation in points earned. In that case, since West Indies and Pakistan are below us, I think we are on the safe side.”We should be more focused on the South Africa series which is coming up shortly rather than playing matches against teams ranked below us.”For Bangladesh to slip out of the top eight, Pakistan will have to beat Sri Lanka convincingly but lose to West Indies in the Zimbabwe tri-series.”There is nothing called a guarantee in this situation,” Nizamuddin said. “Their chances are very slim. Pakistan have to win a number of matches because they are below West Indies.”

Alex Blake smashed an unbeaten 59 off just 24 balls as Kent made sure of a place in the NatWest T20 Blast quarter-finals with a three-wicket win over Gloucestershire at Cheltenham. The powerful left-hander smote four sixes and five fours to see his side to a target of 167 with two balls to spare. Sam Northeast contributed 49 and Joe Denly 31, while Craig Miles claimed 3 for 27.Gloucestershire had posted 166 for seven after losing the toss, Michael Klinger strengthening his position as the competition’s leading run-maker with 75 from 50 balls. Mitch Claydon was the most successful Kent bowler with three wickets.Klinger’s runs took his aggregate in the South Group to 653 at an average of 108.83. But, while leaders Kent can now look forward to the knock-out stages, Gloucestershire face elimination. The hosts suffered a setback in the second over of their innings when Hamish Marshall, who had already moved to 11, was forced to retire hurt with a recurrence of a calf injury. Ian Cockbain joined Klinger and the pair took the score to 36 in the fifth over when Cockbain was caught behind off Claydon for 11.Klinger and fellow Australian Peter Handscomb then added 79 in 9.1 overs, Klinger moving to his half-century off 34 balls, with five fours and a six over square leg off Calum Haggett.Handscomb fell for 28, bowled by Fabian Cowdrey attempting to sweep, but Klinger deposited the left-arm spinner over wide long-on for his second six before departing in the same over, the 17th, to a catch at backward point. From then on Gloucestershire lost momentum as Geraint Jones, Jack Taylor, Benny Howell and Tom Smith were dismissed in the closing overs, Claydon and Matt Coles sharing the wickets. The Kent reply was given a brisk start by Joe Denly, who smashed the fourth ball of the innings from Craig Miles back over his head for a straight six and registered another maximum in the third over off Liam Norwell. But Gloucestershire struck two blows in the Powerplay as Bell Drummond was caught behind driving at Miles and Denly fell lbw to James Fuller, having hit 31 off 18 balls.Sam Billings had made only 5 when attempting to reverse sweep the first ball sent down by left-arm spinner Tom Smith, the competition’s leading wicket-taker, and being brilliantly caught above his head at full stretch by Howell at backward point.Darren Stevens and Cowdrey also fell cheaply. But Northeast was still there and when big-hitting Blake came in to launch sixes off Howell and Smith the game seemed to be tilting Kent’s way.The 17th over, bowled by Miles, saw the Kent captain depart one short of his half-century, caught on the midwicket boundary with 36 still needed. But Blake responded with another six and three fours of the next over from Norwell to virtually settle the outcome and ended the game by clearing the ropes for the fourth time.

AGORA DO OUTRO LADO

Morris clinches last-ball win as Topley fumbles

Chris Morris scored 14 runs off the final over and two off the last ball, as Reece Topley failed to gather a return at the stumps and complete a run out that would have forced a Super Over, to give South Africa a nail-biting victory at Newlands

The Report by Firdose Moonda19-Feb-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details Chris Morris scored 14 runs off the final over and two off the last ball, as Reece Topley failed to gather a return at the stumps and complete a run out that would have forced a Super Over, to give South Africa a nail-biting victory at Newlands.Morris rescued South Africa from a middle-order meltdown in which they tumbled from 98 for 3 in the 16th over to 119 for 7 in the 19th and made hard work of what was shaping as a more routine chase.Chris Jordan and Moeen Ali shared five wickets, while Ben Stokes also produced an impressive four overs, to almost overshadow Imran Tahir, who had taken 4 for 21 to restrict England to 134 for 8. Tahir’s effort, which equalled his career-best, slammed the brakes on England after a brisk start. As it turned out, England did not need too many more runs and once again it was fielding errors which meant they finished on the losing side.England may not have thought it would get that close after they stuttered through a significant part of their innings. Their run rate was less than six an over for 17 overs after they plundered 36 off the first three and threatened to post a towering total.Alex Hales and Jason Roy were severe on Kagiso Rabada and Kyle Abbott upfront but their aggression did not last. Roy pulled a Rabada slower ball to Hashim Amla at midwicket and Hales top-edged a sweep in Tahir’s first over, which almost brought a nasty outfield collision, to start the slide.England lost 5 for 29 in the next six overs and South Africa took control. While David Wiese and Morris squeezed, Tahir attacked. He beat Stokes with a googly to have him stumped and had Eoin Morgan and Moeen caught off successive deliveries to stand on the cusp of a hat-trick. He almost got it with a googly to Jordan that missed the top of the stumps.Even though he didn’t, the damage was done. England only had Jos Buttler but he and the lower order could not cut loose to leave South Africa fancying their chances at the halfway stage.South Africa approached the chase watchfully and, with the top-heavy nature of their line-up, they needed to. Amla, who has had his problems against left-armers, offered a chance when he slashed at a Topley delivery and got and edge but Buttler could not hold on.England did not have to wait long, though. Three balls later AB de Villiers was caught on the fine-leg boundary and in the next over Amla was out when David Willey got down well to a low catch at mid-on. South Africa lost the bulk of their experience and still needed 100 runs but had 15 overs to get them.Faf du Plessis and JP Duminy shared in the highest partnership of the match – 41 for the third wicket – but they did not always look at ease. Duminy survived an lbw shout off Jordan and neither of them found the boundary easily. The required run rate increased to almost eight an over and the pressure told.Adil Rashid proved particularly difficult to get away and Duminy succumbed. He was caught at long-on in an attempt to go big and England began to strangle. They pushed the required run rate towards nine and then du Plessis tried to accelerate but picked out long-on too.South Africa needed 37 runs off the last four overs with only the finishers left. David Miller’s lack of game time and the two allrounders’ inexperience gave England the advantage especially after Jordan bowled another boundary-less over.Rilee Rossouw was next to go, top-edging a sweep, but Miller showed the aggression of old when he took 11 runs off three balls from Moeen Ali to leave South Africa needing 21 off two overs.Jordan bowled the perfect penultimate over. He had Miller caught at long-on and bowled Wiese with a full delivery to end his four overs with career-best T20 figures of 3 for 23 and leave Topley with 15 to defend off the final over. The only problem was that he had to do it against Morris. As he did in the Wanderers ODI a week ago, Morris showed big-match temperament and after Abbott gave him the strike he finished the job. A four off a low full toss, a six off another and a two ran as though his life depended on it meant South Africa proved their potential under pressure and England were left to wonder what could have been if Topley had pulled off the run-out.

Destaque no time sub-20 do Corinthians, Daniel Marcos ainda busca sua vaga no elenco profissional.

Court moves IPL out of Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur in May

The Bombay High Court has ruled that IPL 2016 matches scheduled in Maharashtra after April 30 will be moved out of the state

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Apr-20163:51

Bal: IPL just a soft target

All IPL 2016 matches scheduled in Maharashtra after April 30 must be moved out of the state, the Bombay High Court has ruled. The ruling came after a Public Interest Litigation questioned the hosting of matches in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur due to a severe drought in Maharashtra. The ruling affects 13 matches, including the final which was to be held in Mumbai on May 29. Pune will miss out on six matches, including the Eliminator and Qualifier 2, while no games will be held in Nagpur. The state was earlier scheduled to host 20 matches.Last week, the court had sought an explanation from the BCCI and the three state associations on why water should be “wasted” on hosting the games when the state faced one of its worst ever droughts. The court later allowed the opening match to be held as scheduled in Mumbai on April 9, and asked the Maharashtra state government and Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, to respond on plans to tackle the issue of water shortage. On Tuesday, the court orally asked the BCCI if matches could be shifted out of Pune.In its defence, the BCCI had stated that less water was used to prepare the ground for an IPL game when compared to an international fixture. The board also stated that it intended to use treated sewage water for ground preparation in Mumbai and Pune. Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiants, the franchises based in Mumbai and Pune, had proposed to contribute INR 5 crore to the Maharashtra chief minister’s drought relief fund and supply 40 lakh litres of water to drought-hit areas at their own cost. While the BCCI is mulling its next move, IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla has admitted that moving games out of Maharashtra is a logistical problem for the board. He also pointed out that no objections of this kind were raised when Mumbai and Nagpur hosted World T20 matches last month.”Organising the IPL is a gigantic work. It’s not easy. All preparations had been done, completed,” Shukla said. “Now shifting the matches will be a problem. So far, we have not got the written order, after we get that, we will study the order and work out an alternative plan. We always respect the court. We need to talk to other franchises. We will have to work it out.”The key problem is water for farmers, which we are trying to find a solution to. We were willing to give water, contribute to the CM’s fund. Now shifting matches will be a problem. If matches are to be shifted, where will they be moved, how will they be moved, all these issues are involved. And this comes after nobody raised an issue about the 24 World T20 matches that were held recently.”Nobody raised these issues for six months. Whatever was required, we were willing to do. In fact, I would like to point out that a lot many other sports and cultural events are going on in Maharashtra, which also use water and they should also help.”Anurag Thakur, the BCCI secretary, said there was an attempt to create negativity over issues: “We are not using drinking water, we have said that we will use treated sewage water only. How many swimming pools of five-star hotels have been shut? Have people stopped watering their lawns? There is an attempt to create negativity on every issue these days. IPL was to use 0.00038% of water so that shows the requirement was not much.”Ness Wadia, co-owner of the Kings XI Punjab franchise, welcomed the order. Kings XI were scheduled to play three home matches in Nagpur between May 7 and 15, apart from games in Mumbai and Pune on May 13 and 21, respectively. “I’m very happy with this, we welcome this decision,” he said.

Roy's slow walk off sums up Surrey's lament

Jason Roy battled against his natural instincts but his dismissal summed up Middlesex’s domination in the London derby

ScorecardJason Roy battled against the grain•Getty Images

There was a moment in the evening session, when the working men and women made use of free entry after tea, as the sun seemed to prop itself on top of the OCS stand, that summed up where the honours lay at the Oval.Jason Roy, home favourite, T20 stud, was in the middle of a stern examination from Toby Roland-Jones – a bowler built to hit a deck hard enough to strike oil. This is a Surrey side with a young core against a Middlesex side that have been playing Division One cricket since 2012. Here was south London’s jewel against north London’s piston.Roy, in the middle of playing out a maiden, defended the ball back to Roland-Jones, whose follow through always takes him to within chirping distance of the batsman. Roland-Jones said a few words. Roy kept schtum. The Roy of old might have said a few words back. Middlesex were on top, Surrey were 72 for 4 after they had been thrashed before lunch for the icing on the visitors total of 395. This was a time for resistance rather than words, and Roy knew it.The Roy of old might have also looked over to the short boundary towards the Archbishop Tenison’s School and seen sixes beyond his wildest dreams. During mid-pitch discussions with Ben Foakes, with whom he gritted out a 60-run fifth-wicket stand from 144 balls, he might have even wondered if could spit further than the boundary’s edge. This was a time for patience rather than power. And Roy knew it.He remained diligent, played patiently and, having taken a few blows, decided to help Surrey fight their way out of the corner. Having timed his first ball through midwicket for four, he waited 27 more balls before hitting a second. There were three more in the next 13, including a checked straight drive that is so his that there’d be no need to trademark it because so few others could copy it. But having made it to 47, ticking, he worked a tame leg spinner from Dawid Malan into the hands of Sam Robson at short leg. His walk off was slow but never once did he look back.Middlesex bossed a lot of today and excelled in the moments that mattered. Their 10th wicket stand of 68 between Toby Roland-Jones (44*) and Tim Murtagh (24) took them well beyond par, after excellent bowling from Tom Curran and Gareth Batty upset the stumps of James Harris and James Franklin, respectively. Only 29 had been added to the overnight score when Murtagh began accompanying Roland-Jones, who struck four fours and three sixes – only one of which utilised the shorter side.It wasn’t quite the way Middlesex had intended on pushing for 400 after getting to 166 for one in the 43rd over. Like a kebab in the small hours of the morning, a last stand is not something to be relied upon for sustenance and is certainly not appealing to the senses. But, every now and again, it does the job.So, too, by his own humble sentiments, does Ollie Rayner. After collecting 15-wickets here in 2013 when these two last faced off, Rayner returned to haunt Surrey with the first three wickets to fall. Conditions from the Pavilion End rewarded his use of the foot marks made by the quicks at the Vauxhall End to good effect. “I can’t complain about being used just holding up an end or bringing back the over-rate and then not do a job when conditions are in my favour,” he observed wryly at stumps. The first two came in the same over – one which nearly included the prized scalp of Kumar Sangakkara. For a moment, it looked like Rayner had him first ball. Burns was caught at mid off via a leading edge, bringing the Sri Lanka superstar to the crease. On the money, Rayner drifted one in that beat the left-hander on the inside edge and hit pad. Not out. “I was spewing,” said a smiling Rayner at stumps. “That would have been a nice one for the collection – Sangakkara, first pill.”The wicket of Harinath, lbw, arrived two balls later. He had to wait a bit longer to snare the scalp he coveted: a bit of drift and turn saw a skewed drive finish in the hands of Murtagh diving forward a backward point. He celebrated accordingly. It is now 29 wickets for Rayner against Surrey – his next best opponents are Somerset, against whom he has 18. His contract is up at the end of the summer – “Middlesex are dragging their feet,” he proclaimed, tongue firmly in cheek – and, when asked if he’d like to call the Oval, a more spin-friendly track, home, he laughed off the suggestion. His heart for now belongs north of the river. There were signs of variable bounce today and, with Surrey 111 away from the follow-on target with just four wickets left. Whether that is enforced will depend on the weather, with rumblings of rain on day four. Even so, Middlesex are sniffing a first Championship win of the season.
